Mike Turner (R-OH), chairman \u2063of \u2064the House\u200d Permanent\u200b Select \u200bCommittee\u200b on \u200cIntelligence, \u200cwill be\u2064 holding a series \u2062of classified\u200c briefings\u2063 for House Republicans on Section 702\u200b of \u200cthe \u200dForeign Intelligence Surveillance \u200cAct\u200b throughout\u200c the\u200d rest of July. These briefings come as\u2064 members of\u200c both\u200d parties express frustration with\u2064 the\u200b intelligence \u2064community&#8217;s\u200b use \u200dof the\u200c law.<\/p>\n<p>According\u2064 to\u2062 a memo obtained by the Washington Examiner, there \u2064will be nine classified briefings \u200dstarting on\u200b July 18 \u2064and\u2064 continuing\u200c until\u2064 July \u200c28. \u2064The goal \u2063of these\u2063 briefings \u200dis to provide \u2064an \u200copportunity for \u200cmembers\u200d to\u2063 hear \u2063classified examples\u200d of\u200b how the \u2064authority is \u200bused and \u200bhave their questions answered directly \u2062by \u200bintelligence \u200cpersonnel \u2064who\u200c have worked with the tool.<\/p>\n<h3>Reauthorization \u200band \u2062the Call for\u200c Reforms<\/h3>\n<p>Congress \u2064must vote to reauthorize the Section \u2063702\u2064 program \u200bbefore \u200bthe \u2064end\u2063 of the year. However, key\u200b members\u200c from \u2064both parties, \u2062including Rep.\u2063 Turner \u200band the\u200c ranking \u2062member \u200dof \u2064House \u2064Intel,\u2062 have expressed\u200b the \u2062need\u200d for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ga-gov-kemp-signs-voting-rights-bill-into-law\/\" title=\"Ga. Gov. Kemp signs voting rights bill into law\">significant reforms<\/a>\u2064 before \u2062they can support\u2063 reauthorization.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 a\u200b statement, Rep. \u2064Turner emphasized\u2064 the importance \u2063of \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-to-give-ukraine-everything-it-needs-for-as-long-as-it-takes-biden-national-security-adviser-says\/\" title=\"Biden's adviser promises full support to Ukraine indefinitely.\">national\u200d security<\/a>\u200d but \u2063also stressed the need for \u200dsubstantial \u2063and \u2064meaningful reforms to \u2063address \u2063FBI abuses\u200d of the FISA \u200cprocess.\u2063 The\u200d House Intelligence Committee is actively\u2063 working\u2063 with the\u2063 Intelligence Community\u200c and\u200b a bipartisan group to\u200c propose and pass these\u2062 much-needed reforms.<\/p>\n<h3>The \u200cKey Provision \u200band Concerns<\/h3>\n<p>The 702\u200d portion \u2062of FISA \u2063is a key \u200bprovision\u2063 that allows the government to conduct \u200dtargeted\u200c surveillance of \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-intel-chairman-to-hold-classified-briefings-for-republicans-on-fisa\/\" title=\"House Intel chair to host classified GOP briefings on FISA.\">foreign \u200cpersons located<\/a>\u200d outside the \u2063United\u200d States,\u200d according to\u200b the Office \u200dof \u2064the \u200bDirector of National Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u200b a declassified FISA \u2064court\u200d opinion revealed that the FBI had committed \u200c278,000 FISA violations\u2063 in \u200crecent \u2063years, raising concerns \u200bamong \u200dmembers of both parties. Many\u200c believe that the\u2062 FBI\u2064 has\u200c not demonstrated \u200bthe\u2062 ability \u200bto \u200duse this\u200b tool \u2063while protecting\u2064 Americans&#8217;\u200b civil\u2064 liberties.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u200d Mike Johnson \u2062(R-LA) stated,\u200c &#8220;We \u200dwill\u2064 not reauthorize\u200c FISA \u200d702 \u200dunless \u2064the Bureau\u200b proves to Congress\u2063 that\u200d it \u200chas \u200cimplemented\u200c major reforms and establishes\u2063 a \u200btransparent set of \u200bchecks\u200c and\u200c balances to\u2063 ensure that\u200d American \u2064citizens \u2063aren&#8217;t being unconstitutionally\u2062 surveilled\u2062 by the institutions \u2062designed\u200b to protect \u2063them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. \u2064Jim Himes (D-CT),\u200d the \u200dranking \u200dmember \u2062on House Intel, also emphasized\u200c the \u2062need \u200dfor \u2064reforms alongside\u2062 reauthorization. \u200dHe specifically highlighted the\u2063 importance of limiting\u2063 the use \u2062of\u2062 query \u2062terms\u2064 for \u200bU.S. citizens within \u200dFISA \u200cSection \u2064702 \u2062data collected\u2064 by the \u2062National Security Agency.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear that while reauthorization \u200cis \u200bnecessary,\u2062 there is a\u2064 strong \u200ddemand for reforms \u200dto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-cori-bush-rushes-to-defense-of-very-violent-criminals-rioting-attacking-guard-in-jail\/\" title=\"Democrat Cori Bush Rushes To Defense Of \u2018Very Violent\u2019 Criminals Rioting, Attacking Guard In Jail\">address concerns<\/a>\u2064 about \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/quebec-is-now-under-the-equivalent-of-covid-martial-law-no-one-is-allowed-on-the-streets-after-8pm-till-5am\/\" title=\"Quebec Is Now Under the Equivalent of COVID \u2018Martial Law\u2019 \u2013 No One is Allowed on the Streets after 8pm Till 5am\">civil liberties<\/a>\u2064 and \u2063the \u2062proper \u2064use of this\u200b surveillance\u200c tool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Click \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\">here<\/a> to read more\u2064 from the \u2063Washington Examiner.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
