theaters<\/a>, bowling \u200balleys, and more, Americans found \u200ca new hobby: drinking.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> \u2064<\/p>\n<p>Well,\u200b many\u2062 Americans\u200d already drink \u200ctoo\u200d much. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov\/how-much-is-too-much\/is-your-drinking-pattern-risky\/Drinking-Levels.aspx#:~:text=The%202020%E2%80%932025%20Dietary%20Guidelines,women%20when%20alcohol%20is%20consumed.\">U.S.\u200d Dietary Guidelines<\/a> say \u2062women\u2062 can have \u200droughly one drink a day \u2063and \u2064men about two\u2062 drinks\u200c a day, \u2062but\u200c some \u200ddoctors say\u2062 there\u2019s <a\u2063 href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/moderate-drinking.htm\">no safe amount<\/a> of\u200c alcohol\u200d that eliminates \u2063the\u2063 risks associated.\u200d Either\u200d way,\u200d Americans hit \u2062the\u200b bottle after the\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tesla-quarterly-profit-beats-estimates-helped-by-price-hikes\/\" title=\"Tesla quarterly profit beats estimates, helped by price hikes\">lockdowns hit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPer \u200ccapita\u2062 consumption of ethanol from all alcoholic beverages \u2064combined \u2063in 2021\u200c was 2.51\u2063 gallons, representing a 2.9\u200c percent\u200d increase from 2.44 gallons in 2020 and \u2064a 5.5 percent \u200dincrease\u2064 from \u20622.38\u200d gallons in 2019,\u201d the\u200b National\u200d Institute\u2064 on Alcohol \u200cAbuse and\u200d Alcoholism, part \u200bof the National \u200dInstitutes of Health (NIH), <a \u200dhref=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/surveillance120\/CONS21.htm\">said<\/a>\u200c in \u200bits\u2062 latest \u201csurveillance report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis\u200d was the\u2062 largest \u2063two-year \u2064increase\u2063 since 1969, when there\u2062 was\u200b a\u200d 5.9 \u200cpercent\u200c increase\u2062 (2.37 gallons in 1967 to\u200d 2.51 gallons in 1969),\u201d \u2064the \u2062report \u200dsaid.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d <\/p>\n<p>The \u200buptick\u200b in\u2064 alcohol\u200c use came\u2064 almost \u200ccompletely \u2062from hard\u200b liquor.<\/p>\n<p> \u200cper \u2063capita\u2063 alcohol \u200dconsumption\u2063 by U.S.\u2062 Census \u200cregion \u200cbetween 2020 and 2021 indicated increases \u2064of\u200b 5.4 percent \u2062in the \u2063Northeast, \u200c1.6 percent\u200c in \u2064the Midwest, \u200c3.4\u2063 percent \u200bin the South, and \u200c2.3 \u2062percent in the West.<\/em><\/li>\n<p>\u2064 <\/p>\n<li><em>In \u20642021, \u200cState-level per\u2063 capita annual\u200c alcohol\u2062 consumption\u2062 was more\u200d than 10 \u2063percent\u200b above \u200dthe overall national level \u200c(> 2.76 gallons) in\u2062 17 States and \u200dthe District \u2062of Columbia, 10 percent or less above \u200dthe national level\u200c (>\u200b 2.51\u20132.76\u2064 gallons) \u200cin \u20625 \u200bStates, up to\u200c 10 percent\u200d below\u2063 the\u2063 national\u2064 level (2.26\u20132.51 gallons)\u2063 in 15 States,\u2063 and\u200b more \u200dthan\u200c 10 percent \u200bbelow \u200bthe national level \u200c(< 2.26 gallons) \u2064in\u2063 13\u2064 States.<\/em><\/li>\n<p>\u2063 <\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s \u200bmore, \u200bother\u200d studies found \u2064that \u2063more Americans were drinking alone at\u200d home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral studies \u200chave \u2063now shown \u2064that\u200b solitary drinking \u2063increased as a \u200cresult of \u2062the\u200b pandemic,\u201d \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wevv.com\/news\/health\/drinking-alone-when-younger-linked-to-alcoholism-in-mid-30s\/article_6a76224c-a273-51b6-8049-69f2c226b5a2.html\">said<\/a> Kasey Creswell, \u2064an associations\u2064 between\u2062 solitary \u2063drinking\u2062 and alcohol problems\u2064 are\u200c stronger for\u2062 young \u2062women \u2064compared\u2063 to young men,\u201d \u2064she\u2064 said.\u2063 \u201cThis is \u200bespecially concerning\u200c given that there \u2064have\u200d been \u200d<a \u2062home \u2064drinking likely\u2063 came \u200dabout\u200c because many bars \u200band\u2062 restaurants \u2063shut down\u2062 in\u2064 the early \u200cdays\u2064 of the pandemic. \u2063Another \u2062NIH \u200dstudy \u200dfound that \u200cat-home drinking\u200d can be \u200dbad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn \u2062general,\u2064 on-premises\u2063 contexts such as restaurants\u200d and bars\/pubs were\u2063 not associated with\u200d as many problems\u2063 as off-premises contexts such as\u2063 drinking at\u200d home or \u200cat\u2064 friends\u2019 and relatives\u2019 homes,\u201d said \u2063a\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9897614\/\">study<\/a> released in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInjuries are associated \u2063with the\u2064 frequency of drinking \u200bat home\u200d alone \u200cor\u2063 with \u200dfamily \u2063and \u200dat \u2062restaurants.
