Joe \u2062Manchin Opposes Changing Perimeter \u2062Rule \u200cfor Washington National\u2064 Airport<\/h2>\n<p>Sen. Joe Manchin\u2062 (D-WV) has \u2064taken a firm stance against \u200caltering\u2063 the \u200cperimeter rule\u2064 for the Ronald Reagan\u2062 Washington National Airport, calling it &#8220;unacceptable&#8221; to change \u200cthe rules for long-distance \u200bflights taken \u200dby members \u2064of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter addressed to U.S. Senate Committee\u2064 on \u2063Commerce,\u2063 Science, \u200cand \u2062Transportation Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and \u2064ranking \u2063member Ted Cruz (R-TX), Manchin expressed\u2062 his concerns about the \u2064potential\u2064 impact of changing the perimeter\u2064 rule on\u2062 regional \u2062airports.<\/p>\n<h3>Proposal \u2063to Amend the DCA Perimeter \u200cRule<\/h3>\n<p>The proposed \u2064amendment seeks to modify the DCA \u2062perimeter rule that\u200d was established \u200bby Congress in 1966. This rule\u2064 currently\u200b imposes restrictions\u2063 on the\u2064 number\u2062 of long-distance flights\u2062 allowed \u200bwithin a 1,250-mile \u200dradius \u200dof the\u2064 airport. Presently, only\u2064 20 daily round trips\u200b to 10 routes over \u200bthe perimeter are \u200bpermitted, with seven airlines operating these flights.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063Senate&#8217;s proposed bill, known as\u2064 the Direct \u200dCapital Access \u2064Act of 2023, aims\u2064 to \u200dadd 28 new flights within and \u200dbeyond the\u2062 perimeter \u2064at DCA. Cynthia Lummis \u200d(R-WY) as a co-sponsor.\u2063 It is \u2064currently\u200b under consideration\u2064 by the Senate Commerce Committee\u200c to be included \u200bin the\u2064 2023\u2064 Federal\u2062 Aviation Administration Reauthorization bill. With the agency&#8217;s \u200cauthorization \u200cset \u200dto expire on Sept. \u200d20, Congress is actively\u2063 working on a \u200bseries of bills and amendments to\u200d meet the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>While the\u2062 House Transportation \u2063and Infrastructure\u2063 Committee has already approved its\u200b bill to \u200dreauthorize the FAA, the legislation\u200b is \u2063facing obstacles \u2064in the Senate\u200b committee due to ongoing debates over \u200dairport \u200brestrictions.<\/p>\n<h3>Airline \u200bCEOs Express \u2063Concerns<\/h3>\n<p>The CEOs \u200bof American,\u2062 Alaska, and United airlines have\u2062 released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-drivers-face-23-tolls-after-biden-backs-congestion-hikes-championed-by-cuomo-and-hochul\/\" title=\"NYC drivers to pay  tolls as Biden supports congestion hikes pushed by Cuomo and Hochul.\">joint statement opposing<\/a> \u200dthe proposed changes. They\u2064 argue that altering \u200cDCA operations\u2064 to the \u2063proposed scale would\u200b lead\u2062 to \u200bsignificant passenger \u2062delays and compromise the \u200dairport&#8217;s operational integrity.<\/p>\n<p>CEOs\u2064 Robert Isom, Ben Minicucci, and \u2063Scott Kirby\u200d expressed\u200b concerns about the potential impact on the timely passage of critical \u2064FAA\u2064 Reauthorization legislation, which aims\u200c to improve \u2064safety\u2063 and efficiency in air travel.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
