The letter called out the \u200dinstitute&#8217;s \u200ddevelopment of\u2063 &#8220;dual-use technologies&#8221; \u200cthat\u2064 could \u200cbenefit the\u2064 Chinese \u200dmilitary and requested information on the institute&#8217;s research and funding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Berkeley\u2019s \u2063P.R.C.-backed collaboration\u2063 with\u2064 Tsinghua\u200d University raises many \u2063red \u2062flags,&#8221; the \u2062letter, <a\u200c href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/17\/us\/politics\/house-committee-berkeley-china.html?partner=slack&#038;smid=sl-share\">signed<\/a>\u2063 by committee chairman Mike Gallagher \u2063(R.,\u200d Wis.)\u200b and Rep. \u200cVirginia \u200dFoxx\u2063 (R.,\u200d N.C.), read.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062  \u2063<\/p>\n<p>Berkeley told \u2064the <i>New York \u200dTimes<\/i> that it takes\u200d national \u2062security \u200c&#8221;very\u200d seriously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> \u200b \u2063<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The campus is \u200creviewing\u2064 past agreements \u2063and \u2064actions\u2062 involving or \u2062connected \u200dto \u200cTsinghua-Berkeley \u200bShenzhen \u200cInstitute&#8221;\u2062 and would &#8220;fully \u200band transparently \u200ccooperate\u200d with \u200bany\u200d federal inquiries,&#8221;\u2063 the\u2062 university said.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200c<\/p>\n<h3>Funding and \u200bCollaboration Concerns<\/h3>\n<p> \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>Funding the \u2063school\u200c received\u2063 from\u2063 Chinese \u2063entities\u2063 also was called into \u200bquestion,\u2064 the\u2063 <i>New\u200d York \u200cTimes<\/i>\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/17\/us\/politics\/house-committee-berkeley-china.html?partner=slack&#038;smid=sl-share\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p> \u200d <\/p>\n<div>\n  \u200d  <\/p>\n<p><a \u2064href=\"https:\/\/handsoffmyrewards.com\/?utm_source=freebeacon&#038;utm_medium=advertising&#038;utm_campaign=2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p> \u2063   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/handsoffmyrewards.com\/?utm_source=freebeacon&#038;utm_medium=advertising&#038;utm_campaign=2023\" target=\"_blank\" \u2064rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> \u200c <\/p>\n<p><em>The committee \u2064also \u2064questioned\u200d whether \u2064Berkeley had properly\u2062 disclosed Chinese funding \u2062for\u2063 the\u2062 institute,\u2063 and\u200b cited\u2063 its collaborations with Chinese\u2064 universities and\u2063 companies that \u200dhave\u2063 been\u2062 the subjects\u2063 of \u200dsanctions\u200b by \u200cthe United States \u2062in recent years,\u2063 like the National\u2064 University \u2063of Defense\u200c Technology,\u2063 the telecom firm \u200cHuawei and \u200cthe Chinese drone maker\u200b DJI.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2062  \u2064<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2063 also\u2064 said that Berkeley\u2062 faculty \u2062serving \u2062at the\u2062 institute had \u2063received funding \u2062from \u2062the Defense \u200bAdvanced Research Projects \u2063Agency \u200band\u2062 other U.S. funding \u200cfor the development of\u2063 military applications, raising\u200b concerns\u2062 about Chinese\u200d access \u2064to those experts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<div>\n\u200c   \u200c\u2062 <\/p>\n<h3>Previous\u200c Concerns Raised by the House Science, Space, and\u200b Technology \u200dCommittee<\/h3>\n<p> \u200c   <\/p>\n<p>The \u2063letter comes\u200c after\u200c the \u200bHouse\u2064 Science,\u200c Space, and\u2062 Technology Committee in May <a href=\"https:\/\/science.house.gov\/2023\/6\/science-committee-leaders-want-answers-on-uc-berkeley-s-failure-to-disclose-gifts-from-the-chinese-government\">called<\/a> out Berkeley&#8217;s\u2062 failure to properly \u200creport more than \u2062$200\u200c million in \u200bfunding it received from China.<\/p>\n<p> \u2064 <\/p><\/div>\n<p> \u200c <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In \u200bexchange for monetary contributions, UC Berkeley\u200c officials offered \u2063exclusive \u200btours of \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-investigates-uc-berkeleys-china-ties\/\" title=\"House probes UC Berkeley's connections to China.\">cutting-edge \u2062semiconductor research \u2063facilities<\/a> \u2063to Chinese\u2063 delegations,&#8221; the \u200ccommittee \u200dchairman Frank\u200d Lucas\u2062 (R., Okla.) \u200dwrote. &#8220;These delegations included Chinese \u200cresearchers as well as \u2062multiple senior Chinese government officials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u200b  <\/p>\n<p>In 2021, \u2062reports\u2062 showed that Berkeley \u2062took millions\u2064 of dollars from \u200cChina to \u2062run a\u2063 big data\u200c research\u200c center \u2062and\u200c advise\u2064 the regime.
