He\u2064 fears \u200bfuture \u200dadvanced \u2063iterations of the technology could\u2063 create and\u200c act\u200b on \u200dtheir\u200b own, \u200bunexpected, goals.<\/p>\n<p> \u200b<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWithout \u2064a human\u200b in \u200dthe \u2062loop that checks\u200b every action to\u200c see \u2062if it\u2019s\u200c not dangerous, we\u200b might\u200c end \u200cup\u2063 with\u2062 actions that are \u200dcriminal or could \u200bharm\u2063 people,\u201d<\/strong> said Bengio, calling for\u200b more \u2062regulation. <strong>\u201cIn\u2063 years\u2063 from \u200bnow\u200c these \u200dsystems \u200ccould\u2064 be\u200b smarter\u2064 than us, but \u2064it\u200c doesn\u2019t\u200b mean they have \u200dthe same \u200bmoral \u2063compass.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 one \u2064experiment posted \u2062online, an anonymous creator instructed an\u200d agent \u2064called \u2064ChaosGPT \u2064to be\u200d a \u200c\u201cdestructive, power-hungry, \u200bmanipulative \u2062AI.\u201d The \u2063agent \u2063developed \u2064a 5-step plan,\u2062 with\u2062 Step \u200c1: \u2063\u201cDestroy \u2062humanity\u201d \u2062and \u200cStep 5: \u2064\u201cAttain\u2063 immortality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It \u200ddidn\u2019t get\u200b too\u200b far,\u200d though, \u200bseeming\u2063 to disappear down \u200ca \u2064rabbit\u2062 hole of researching and storing\u2064 information\u2063 about history\u2019s deadliest\u200d weapons\u200b and\u200c planning\u200c Twitter \u200bposts.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063U.S. Federal Trade \u2062Commission, which\u2062 is \u200ccurrently investigating\u200b OpenAI\u2062 over \u2063concerns\u2064 of consumer harm, did not address autonomous\u200d agents\u2063 directly,\u2063 but \u200creferred \u2063Reuters \u2063to previously \u2062published blogs\u2062 on deepfakes and marketing\u200d claims about \u200dAI.\u200b OpenAI\u2019s\u200c CEO \u2063has\u2064 said \u2062the startup \u2062follows the \u200blaw and \u2062will \u200dwork \u200bwith the FTC. \u200d<\/p>\n<p>\u2063 <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018DUMB AS\u200b A ROCK\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u200c <\/p>\n<p>Existential \u2062fears aside, \u2062the \u200dcommercial\u200c potential \u2062could \u200bbe \u200blarge.\u2064 Foundation models \u200dare\u2063 trained on \u2062vast amounts \u200bof\u200d data \u2064such\u200b as \u200dtext \u200bfrom the\u2063 internet using \u2064artificial neural\u2062 networks \u2063that are \u2062inspired\u2062 by the architecture \u200cof\u200d biological\u2064 brains.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064 <\/p>\n<p>OpenAI \u2062itself is very interested in \u2063AI \u200dagent technology, according to four \u2064people briefed\u2063 on \u2064its\u200b plans.\u200c Garg, one of\u2064 the\u200b people it \u2064briefed, said\u2064 OpenAI\u2063 is \u2063wary\u200c of \u2062releasing\u200b its \u2062own\u2063 open-ended \u2062agent\u200b into the market before\u2063 fully understanding the issues. \u200dThe\u200d company told Reuters it conducts\u2063 rigorous testing\u200c and builds \u2062broad \u2062safety\u200d protocols before releasing new \u200csystems.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft, \u200dOpenAI\u2019s\u200d biggest backer, is among\u200c the big\u2062 guns taking aim\u200c at the\u200b AI\u200c agent field\u200c with \u2064its \u2064\u201ccopilot \u2063for\u200b work\u201d\u200c that\u200d can draft\u200b solid \u200demails,\u200c reports and presentations.<\/p>\n<p>\u200c <\/p>\n<p>CEO\u2062 Satya Nadella sees\u200d foundation-model technology\u2063 as\u2064 a \u2064leap from digital \u2062assistants such as Microsoft\u2019s\u200c own \u200cCortana, Amazon\u2019s \u2064Alexa, \u2063Apple\u2019s \u200dSiri and the Google \u2063Assistant \u2062\u2013\u2064 which,\u2062 in his view, have\u2063 all\u2063 fallen short of initial \u200bexpectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were\u2064 all\u2063 dumb as \u200ba\u2062 rock.
