Roger Marshall (R-KS) introduced a bill aimed at \u2062stopping the enforcement of\u200d Proposition 12 on producers outside California.<\/p>\n<p>California&#8217;s measure, which was approved by\u200d 63% of voters in 2018 and pushed heavily \u200cby animal rights groups, requires \u2063all pork \u2063producers who want to sell into the Golden State market to provide 24 \u200dsquare feet per sow, \u2062which former \u2064National Pork Producers Council president Terry Wolters said could cost \u2064producers an \u2062additional $3,500 per \u200csow for compliance.<\/p>\n<p>California represents 13%\u200d of \u2063the domestic pork market,\u200c the largest market in the \u2064country. Hinson and Marshall \u200cintroduced the\u200d Ending Agricultural Trade \u2063Suppression Act, which \u200dwould block any state\u200d from \u2063enforcing its \u2063own\u2063 agricultural \u2064production regulations on another \u200bstate: California cannot threaten access\u2063 to its market\u2063 if a Kansas hog producer does not \u2062comply with Proposition 12.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cProp\u2063 12 allows liberal lawmakers and radical activists \u200bin \u2064California, who\u200d don\u2019t \u2062know\u200d the\u2062 first\u200c thing about\u200c farming or raising \u2062animals,\u2062 to regulate \u200dhow \u200dIowa farmers\u2064 do their job, devastating \u2062small family farms and \u200bmaking\u200d food more\u200d expensive,&#8221; Hinson told\u2064 the \u200dWashington\u200d Examiner. &#8220;To any \u200cliberal California interest group that\u200d wants to claim\u2064 they know the first thing\u200d about agricultural production, \u2064you have an \u200copen invite to come to \u200bIowa and learn how \u200dour \u200cfarmers\u200c take the \u2063best care \u200bof their\u200b animals\u200b and ensure \u2064you have high-quality food on\u2064 your plates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The EATS Act\u2064 has been met with criticism \u2063from groups such as\u200c the Organization\u2063 for Competitive Markets, \u200dwhich says \u2063it is \u2063aimed at &#8220;fighting for \u200beconomic\u2062 justice for America&#8217;s \u2063family\u200b farmers\u2062 and ranchers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OCM has leaned into Beijing as \u200bthe boogeyman, saying \u200bit\u2062 is a \u2064&#8221;Pork\u2064 Perk \u200dfor China,&#8221; while also \u2064arguing that it \u200dtramples on states&#8217;\u2063 rights. Recent\u2062 op-eds \u2064in Townhall and the Hill, which OCM\u2063 pushed on social media, detail their position \u200bthat the \u200dbill would benefit China\u2064 because, \u200cfor example, \u200dthe world&#8217;s \u200blargest \u2062pork producer \u200band \u200bpackager \u200dSmithfield\u2064 has been majority-owned \u200cby \u200bChina since 2013,\u200b and the\u200d EATS Act would allow Smithfield noncompliance with\u2062 California&#8217;s measure.<\/p>\n<p>While\u2063 Smithfield is \u200dmajority-owned by China, the\u200c EATS Act\u2064 only pertains to \u200cAmerican \u2063producers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u200d might \u200dbe the\u2063 most ignorant piece I&#8217;ve ever seen written. It\u2062 completely ignored \u200cwhat the bill does,&#8221;\u2064 Aaron\u2064 Propelka, Kansas Livestock Association\u2063 vice\u2063 president\u2062 of legal and\u200b government affairs, said\u200c of the \u200bTownhall\u200c op-ed.<\/p>\n<p>Propelka told the Washington Examiner \u2063that \u200cwhile \u200bSmithfield \u2064does \u200drepresent \u206320%\u2063 of\u2064 the \u2064pork production and\u2063 packaging market, \u200b80% is\u2063 still not connected \u2064to China,\u2062 so that connection\u200d &#8220;doesn&#8217;t even compute.&#8221; The EATS Act does\u2062 not\u2063 pertain to livestock \u200dproduction in \u200cother countries.<\/p>\n<p>He also said &#8220;the \u200bgroups \u2063that \u2063really don&#8217;t\u2063 want to see this\u200d happen&#8221; are the same\u2063 animal rights groups\u2063 that backed Proposition \u206212 \u2063in\u200b the first place, pointing to\u2064 connections between OCM and groups like the\u2063 Humane Society of the United\u200b States, which \u2064was \u200dheavily involved in defending the measure in\u200d the \u2063Supreme Court\u2064 case.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;This is a hollow argument fabricated and pushed by radical special interests who\u200c want to\u2064 impose burdensome regulations on Iowa farmers in \u200bthe\u200d name \u2063of\u200d animal welfare when they don\u2019t know the\u200d first thing\u2064 about\u2062 raising \u200danimals,&#8221; \u2062a \u2064spokesperson for Hinson,\u2064 commenting on\u200c the purported \u2062benefit\u200b to China, told\u200c the\u200c Washington Examiner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The National Cattlemen&#8217;s Beef \u200dAssociation \u200dalso supports the EATS\u2062 Act \u2064and told \u200bthe Washington Examiner they are \u2064concerned \u2063about \u200cthe agriculture industry-wide \u2062implications of regulations\u200c like Proposition 12.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis\u2064 is the bigger\u2062 strategy \u200bof\u200d animal \u200cactivists looking at every little component they\u200b can find \u2064in order to squeeze us to \u2063the point \u200bwhere \u2063they\u200b ultimately get their \u200bgoal, which is to reduce \u200cconsumption\u2064 of \u200dred meat or \u2062all meats\u2062 among\u2063 Americans\u200b and\u2063 globally,\u201d NCBA CEO Colin\u200b Woodall said \u2064in\u200b a radio interview.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to NCBA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-perfect-ranking-from-planned-parenthood-5-what-to-find-out-about-biden-hhs-nominees-abortion-record\/\" title=\"\u2018A Perfect Ranking From Planned Parenthood\u2019: 5 WHAT TO FIND OUT ABOUT Biden HHS Nominee\u2019s Abortion Record\">animal rights activists<\/a> have &#8220;infiltrated&#8221; the \u200dagriculture\u2064 industry.<\/p>\n<p>Some groups, according \u2062to \u200cNCBA President Todd \u2063Wilkinson, &#8220;turned\u200d their\u2063 backs \u200con our industry by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/animal-activists-dangle-china-boogeyman-in-fight-over-california-pork-restrictions-2\/\" title=\"Animal activists use China boogeyman to oppose California pork restrictions.\">hiring animal rights activists<\/a> like former Humane \u2063Society of the\u200c United States (HSUS) staffers \u200bJoe Maxwell and Angela Huffman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OCM has deep\u200d ties to HSUS\u200d and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maine-lobstermen-face-extinction-threat-from-big-wind-corporations-environmentalists\/\" title=\"Maine Lobstermen Face Extinction Threat From Big Wind Corporations, Environmentalists\">animal rights organizations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>OCM board member Marty Irby \u2064previously served as \u200dthe\u200b &#8220;head\u200d of \u200cequine protection and rural affairs at the Humane Society of the United States\u2063 and senior adviser \u2064at the \u2063Humane Society\u200d Legislative\u200b Fund\u200b from\u2062 2016-2018.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former\u200c OCM leader Joe Maxwell \u200dwas HSUS&#8217;s\u2063 vice president \u200cof outreach and engagement and went on to \u2064start another\u200b activist group called Farm Action.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Huffman, \u200bformer HSUS\u200d market development coordinator \u2064for \u2064rural development and \u2062outreach,\u200b was OCM&#8217;s\u200c communications and research director before\u2064 leaving to co-found Farm \u200cAction with Maxwell.<\/p>\n<p>HSUS,\u200b OCM, and others have also joined forces in court filings \u200cunfriendly to\u2063 the meat production\u2064 industry.<\/p>\n<p>OCM did not \u2063respond to a request for comment from\u2063 the\u2063 Washington Examiner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Animal rights activists are leveraging China&#8217;s image to oppose legislation against California&#8217;s pork production restrictions.
