Our nation has been\u200b run into the\u2064 ground, \u200cand our \u2062leaders seems \u200dat\u2063 best clueless about, and at\u2062 worst\u200b complicit \u2062in, the destruction.\u200c But\u200c replacing an elite caste is difficult; \u2063elites are, well,\u200b elite \u200bin\u200c power and\u2064 connections,\u2062 even if \u200dnot in competence.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200c \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Notre Dame political theory professor Patrick Deneen has some\u200c ideas about \u2064why our elites are so \u200cbad, and \u2063what to do about it.\u2063 A \u2064half-decade after his \u200csuccessful \u2062book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/01\/12\/understand-liberalism-failing-right-left-read-patrick-deneens-latest\/\">Why Liberalism Failed<\/a><\/em>,\u200c Deneen is ready\u2064 to answer\u200b the question,\u2064 \u201cWhat\u2064 now?\u201d with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Regime-Change-Toward-Postliberal-Future\/dp\/B0BJ183ZYZ\/\">Regime Change: \u200dToward\u2063 a Postliberal \u2064Future<\/a>.<\/em> He\u2064 deserves\u200b credit for attempting to\u2063 build and \u2062not just\u2063 critique,\u2062 and\u2063 this volume is\u2062 an insightful, challenging, and sometimes perplexing sketch of what \u2063has\u2064 gone wrong\u200c in \u2063our \u2063nation, and what \u2063might be done \u200dto put\u2064 it right.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: \u200dauto; \u2062margin-right: \u2062auto;\u200c text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-964096819\">\n<div \u200cid=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" \u200dclass=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div\u2063 class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-044050f337205398fdf052a18cc1dc17\u2063 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-044050f337205398fdf052a18cc1dc17\"><\/div>\n<p>  \u2064  <\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s diagnosis begins\u200b with \u200ca critique of liberalism that emphasizes\u200b how the persistent divide between the few and\u200b the many \u2062is \u2064exacerbated by liberalism, which suppresses the\u2063 views \u2062of the many in \u2064the name of progress. Some sort \u2064of \u2062elite is inevitable, \u2063but\u2062 liberalism\u2064 encourages an \u2063elite\u200d that is antithetical to the many.<\/p>\n<p>Deneen argues that an ideological commitment to\u200b progress\u2064 will always be \u200cdirected against \u200dthe people, who naturally tend to\u2064 be\u2062 conservative. What \u200cthe \u200bpeople need and want \u201cis stability, \u200dorder, continuity \u200dand\u2064 a sense\u200d of\u2062 gratitude for the past\u200d and obligation toward \u200cthe future,\u201d \u2063which is to\u2063 say,\u2062 a \u201cconservatism \u2062that\u2062 conserves.\u201d What liberalism\u2063 offers \u2062in\u200b its classical form is the \u2063churning, \u200bdislocating \u201ccreative destruction\u201d \u2062of the global marketplace and, in\u200d its progressive \u2062form, \u2062the dissolving \u200bmoral \u2062and social chaos of revolution against old norms, obligations, and communities. And the two varieties are\u2062 increasingly \u200bcombined \u200cin woke\u2064 capitalism.<\/p>\n<p> \u200c   <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Aristopopulism\u2019<\/h2>\n<p> \u200c \u200b  <\/p>\n<p>Elite \u200cobsessions with race, sex, \u2063and so-called\u2064 gender\u200c allow them\u200b to wage culture war as\u200d class war against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-football-analogy-to-explain-democrats-election-cheating\/\" title=\"A Football Analogy to Explain Democrats' Election Cheating\">working class<\/a>. Even as they enjoy the \u200cprestige \u200band\u200b material rewards of their status,\u2062 our elites wallow \u2062in\u200d claims of\u2064 victimization and justify their\u2062 assaults on \u2064the lower\u2062 classes by ludicrously designating \u200cthem \u200bas oppressors who\u200c deserve their \u2063lot. Hence the spectacle of\u200d some\u2062 of the most privileged people in history claiming that \u200ddisagreement with, say, gender ideology, \u200cis an\u2062 active form of harm\u200d that threatens \u200btheir \u2063safety\u2063 and \u2064must therefore\u2062 be suppressed \u200band excluded. Somehow, \u200dthe \u2063ostensibly marginalized and oppressed\u2064 have every major corporation lining up to \u2062sponsor them \u200band <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBlakeEPPC\/status\/1669887871614853130\">squash<\/a> their enemies.<\/p>\n<p>   \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>Our\u200b leadership class is rotten,\u200c but Deneen\u2019s castigation of the elites does\u2062 not let poor and working-class Americans \u2063off the hook;\u2063 they\u2062 have\u200b too often joined in the destruction of \u2064their families\u200b and communities. And reaction against the\u2062 elites\u200c is not enough to revive \u2062the remains of \u2064a healthy working-class culture. In\u200b Deneen\u2019s \u200dview, the populist \u200drevolt \u200dagainst the elites has \u2064thus \u2063far\u2063 been \u201cuntutored \u2064and ill \u2062led\u201d\u200b with \u200bformer President Trump a\u200c \u201cdeeply flawed narcissist\u201d who failed to \u2063deliver\u200c on \u200ctoo many \u2063promises.\u200c Tanking \u2064Bud Light and \u200dTarget \u200dis satisfying but not nearly enough.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-eb74509cf223e0297673be5ee46ea41b fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" \u2064id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-eb74509cf223e0297673be5ee46ea41b\"><\/div>\n<p>    \u2063<\/p>\n<p>Thus, \u200cDeneen calls for renewal in the form \u2062of a\u200b mixed regime that goes beyond\u200c balancing the\u2063 interests of the\u200c elites \u200band \u200cthe\u200c masses against each other, \u2064and instead seeks \u200bto\u2064 create\u200d genuine solidarity \u200bbetween them.\u2063 Though\u200c the\u2062 U.S. \u2062has \u200bnever had an \u200caristocracy as \u2063such, \u200bDeneen identifies \u200dthe \u2064professional classes \u200d\u2014 such\u200b as\u200b doctors, clergy, and\u2063 lawyers\u2064 \u2014 as \u2063having\u200d long served some of \u200cthe same\u200b conservative\u2064 aristocratic imperatives\u200d to \u201cresist the\u2062 innovators and \u2064elevate the masses.\u201d Local leaders \u2062tend \u2064to \u2064be more\u2063 dedicated to the good of their communities, \u2062including the working poor, \u200bthan far-away \u2063moneymen and social justice\u200b schemers.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200b  <\/p>\n<p>Establishing the sort of \u2063\u201caristopopulism\u201d Deneen envisions will require a \u2063combination of populist pressure\u200d and <a \u2064href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/24\/wanted-republicans-willing-to-betray-the-ruling-class\/\">class traitors<\/a>. The end goal \u200cis \u2062to change the elites, \u200cin \u2063part \u2064by replacing them, \u2063and in part by providing \u2062new incentives that require\u2063 them to serve the \u2064common good in\u200c order to\u200d keep their \u200bpower\u2064 and positions.\u200c Deneen hopes \u200dfor \u2063a cadre \u2062of elites who will\u2062 harness populist \u200cpolitical \u2064energy to establish themselves as\u200b a vanguard\u2064 of the\u200d common good,\u2062 and Ohio\u2063 Sen. J.D. Vance, who has\u2063 promoted <em>Regime Change<\/em>,\u2064 may\u2062 be \u2062a prototype.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064    <\/p>\n<p>Deneen offers a variety \u200cof proposals \u200dthat\u2064 Vance \u2063and\u2062 others might \u2064pursue. \u2063For example, regarding the use of corporate power\u200d to \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/06\/15\/left-demands-that-big-business-boycott-states-that-dont-want-abortion\/\">impose<\/a> economic sanctions on \u200csocially conservative \u2063states, he\u2062 writes, \u201cAny economic \u200binstitution with sufficient\u2064 power to bring financial ruin \u2064upon a sovereign political entity should\u2062 be severely curtailed in\u2063 the name\u200b of the \u2064common good.\u201d \u200cThis insistence\u2062 that the market be \u200bsubordinated\u200d to non-economic considerations may be heresy to some on the\u200c right, but it is a\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2021\/05\/75520\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\u2062 noopener\">necessary<\/a> corrective.<\/p>\n<p> \u2064   \u200c<\/p>\n<p>Deneen \u2062is \u2064likewise right\u2064 that liberalism\u2019s\u2064 claim to\u2063 neutrality \u2062is a lie. It \u200bis impossible to really\u200c be\u200b neutral \u2063between \u200cgood\u200d and evil, \u200dGod\u2062 and \u200cSatan, \u200dtruth \u2063and falsehood.\u2063 There\u2064 is nothing neutral, for \u200cexample, about\u200c liberalism\u2019s embrace of the \u2064idea of\u2063 rational adult\u2062 individuals as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2022\/11\/85563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">politically normative<\/a>, and\u200c this ahistorical understanding\u200b of\u2062 human persons \u2063has \u200ca host of ill\u200d effects, \u200dled \u200dby\u200c the disdain it inculcates for \u200cdependence. As \u200bDeneen notes, \u201cEvery political order \u200drests on certain \u2064theological\u2063 assumptions,\u201d and \u2064he is skilled \u2064at unmasking those\u200b upon\u2062 which the varieties of \u2064liberalism are\u2062 based.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9da74bc0bf03a4d02a987e4f59bf00d3 \u2062fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9da74bc0bf03a4d02a987e4f59bf00d3\"><\/div>\n<p>Deneen does\u2062 briefly note the Christian \u200droots \u2063of liberalism, and it \u2064would have been illuminating\u2062 had he engaged seriously\u200b with\u2063 David\u2063 Walsh (another former professor \u200bof mine) who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2020\/12\/72301\/\">has made<\/a> \u2063perhaps\u200d the \u200dmost\u2063 compelling case \u2062for \u2063liberalism on these\u200d grounds.\u2064 However, we cannot \u2062ask for everything of\u200d interest to be included\u200c in one book.\u200d We \u200cmay also\u2062 forgive some generalizations \u200band imprecision in a political\u2064 theory \u2062book for\u2064 a general audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b    <\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, even a\u200d sympathetic\u2062 reader must\u2064 wrestle with \u2062aspects of Deneen\u2019s arguments. It\u2063 is not just that \u200bhe leaves tensions unresolved, but that he ignores some of them, \u2063thereby \u2064leaving some\u200c of \u200dhis\u2062 views \u2064opaque. An \u200cobvious \u2064example is that his\u200d emphasis on the few and \u200bthe many elides the importance of the \u200dmiddle class in the United \u200dStates. \u2064The country \u200cis filled with those who are\u2062 neither \u200cworking\u2063 class\u2064 nor elite, and have both benefited from and been harmed\u200b by liberalism.\u2063 Yet\u2064 Deneen seems to shy\u2064 away \u200dfrom analyzing \u2062this class, even though \u2064their loyalties\u200d can make \u2063or break his\u200d political and\u2064 cultural project.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064   \u2062 <h2\u200b class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restoration\u200c or\u200d Subversion?<\/h2>\n<p>\u2063 \u200d   <\/p>\n<p>More \u2064fundamental still \u2063is the question of \u2063whether Deneen\u2019s vision of regime change is conservative. Is \u2064his goal to \u201crestore \u200cthe republic\u201d \u200cor to replace it by\u200b quietly subverting\u200b it \u2064into a functionally\u200b different regime? \u200cThis in turn is bound \u2062up \u2064with\u2063 the \u200dquestion of \u2063whether\u2062 the \u2063United States was founded as a fundamentally liberal nation \u2014 if so, does American \u2062conservatism necessarily consist of\u200c merely preserving \u200ban earlier iteration \u200bof liberalism?<\/p>\n<p>   \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>Many on \u200dthe right have answered yes, arguing that American conservatism \u2064is\u200c dedicated \u2062to \u200bthe preservation and\u200b perfection of the classical liberalism famously \u2063expressed in the preamble\u200c to\u2064 the\u2063 Declaration \u200dof Independence. \u2063This interpretation of American conservatism is\u2064 fundamentally \u200drevolutionary \u2062and \u2062<a\u2063 href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2020\/03\/60698\/\">ultimately<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2020\/03\/60724\/\">oppressive<\/a>, but it has been \u200dwidely championed by \u2064a\u2063 host of self-described\u2063 conservatives, led by disciples \u2063of the Claremont professor and Lincoln\u2062 biographer Harry Jaffa.<\/p>\n<p>The prominence\u2064 of this ideology\u200c prompts Deneen to\u2063 denounce \u2063\u201cwhat has passed for \u2018conservatism\u2019\u200d in\u200c the\u200b United States for the \u2063past half century\u201d as \u2062simply \u2062another variety \u2063of liberalism. In contrast, he\u2063 champions an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disneys-gloomy-little-mermaid-remake-couldnt-dull-halle-baileys-shine\/\" title=\"Halle Bailey shines in Disney's dark 'Little Mermaid' remake.\">older tradition<\/a> \u2064that American conservatives can look to, \u2064and describes the postliberal new right as \u201ca rediscovery of\u2063 early-modern forms\u2064 of conservatism\u201d and its thinkers, \u2062who \u201cwarned of the\u2063 dangers emerging \u200dfrom an ideology of progress.\u201d Among\u200b the examples he cites are the \u2063American colonists (as seen in the actual text of\u200b Winthrop\u2019s\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/is-a-postliberal-america-even-possible\/\" title=\"Can America Become Postliberal?\">oft-quoted \u201ccity set<\/a> on a hill\u201d\u200b sermon) \u2062and\u2064 the\u200c anti-federalists.<\/p>\n<p>    \u200d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Deneen could have written much more about our nation\u2019s non-liberal heritage and \u2062how \u2062conservatives may learn\u2062 from it. Unfortunately, his\u200c appreciation for our \u2064conservative\u200d patrimony and his judgment of\u200d the Constitution\u2063 and the founding seems to \u200dremain ambiguous, \u200bif not \u2063hostile. \u200dFor example, he refers to\u200c the \u200d\u201cprogressive\u200c liberalism of\u2064 America\u2019s Founding\u200b Fathers\u201d and asserts that\u2064 \u201cthe American\u2063 constitutional\u200d order \u2026\u2064 represented\u200d the Founder\u2019s\u200d belief in \u2026\u2063 a system \u2063in which a designated \u200celite\u200c would\u2064 govern \u200dwith \u2064an aim to advancing\u200d an \u2063ideal of progress\u200d while rendering\u2063 tractable any recalcitrant popular \u200bresistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u200b  \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>Thus, the \u200dquestion\u2064 remains of whether \u2062Deneen believes that \u2062genuine American conservatism \u200cis compatible with our\u200d Constitution, \u200dand therefore \u200cwhether his vision of \u200cregime\u2064 change is \u200bconservative. \u200dDeneen \u200cseems, \u200dat best, ambivalent, arguing \u200bfor the \u201cpeaceful\u2064 but vigorous overthrow of our corrupt and\u200d corrupting liberal \u200bruling class and\u200d the creation of a\u2064 postliberal order in\u200d which \u2062existing\u200d political forms \u200bcan remain\u200b in place, \u200das long as \u2064a fundamentally different ethos \u200cinforms those \u200cinstitutions and the personnel who populate\u200b key offices \u2062and \u2063positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deneen\u2019s\u200b sufferance of\u2064 our Constitutional system\u200b appears conditional \u2064on\u200c it being\u200c run by a new elite with an\u200b ethos contrary \u2062not only\u200c to that\u200b of our\u200b current leaderships \u2064class, \u2064but also\u200d to that of\u2062 our\u200d founders. However, we\u200b may\u200d wonder why this new\u200b elite, \u2062if\u200d they acquired the power Deneen\u2063 hopes\u200c for, \u200dwould \u2063not \u2063try to change our \u200cpolitical forms to something \u200dnot\u200d founded on liberalism. Would anything other than the difficulty of formally amending our supreme\u200c law\u200d restrain them?<\/p>\n<p>\u2062   \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Consequently, though Deneen says he wants to use Machiavellian \u200cmeans to Aristotelian ends,\u200c it \u200bis \u200dpossible to read\u2062 him as\u200c urging something more like\u2064 Platonic\u200d means for \u2064Platonic\u200c ends \u2014 encouraging his\u200c readers to imagine themselves as philosopher-kings\u2064 seizing \u2062control of \u2063and rerouting \u2063the ship of state. He is, \u2062after all,\u200b writing for\u200b the\u200d new elite, and \u200cit \u2064is, \u200bat \u2063best, unclear whether \u2062they\u2064 should\u2062 be \u200brestorationist or \u2062subversive\u2063 of \u200cour\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-rules-ca-gov-overstepped-his-authority-with-covid-order-issues-permanent-injunction-restraining-newsom-from-further-issuing-unconstitutional-orders\/\" title=\"Judge Rules CA Gov Overstepped His Authority with Covid Order, Issues Permanent Injunction Restraining Newsom From Further Issuing Unconstitutional Orders\">constitutional order<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Deneen\u2019s \u200dambiguity on\u2063 this \u200cseparates\u200d him \u200cfrom\u200c the many conservatives who,\u2063 despite generally\u200b agreeing with his\u2063 critique\u2063 of\u200b liberalism, do not \u2064believe\u200b our nation\u2019s founding was irredeemably \u2062liberal. This might\u2062 also explain\u2062 Deneen\u2019s inaccurate attack on\u200d Ryan Anderson and\u200c Robert\u200d George \u2014 they\u2062 certainly\u200c do \u200dnot \u200bbelieve that the good \u201cmust be a matter of \u200dprivate or subpolitical \u2062civic concern,\u201d \u200bbut they are\u200b advocates \u2062for \u2063our\u200c constitutional\u200d order.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2064  <\/p>\n<p>And they \u2064should be.\u2064 The founders were not liberal\u2063 ideologues, \u200cbut statesmen whose ideas\u200b were \u2063a sort of political and cultural syncretism. As\u2064 I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2022\/01\/79798\/\">put it<\/a>, \u201cOur nation\u2019s heritage\u200d and founding \u200cprinciples \u2026\u200d deliberately tempered \u2064and restrained liberal \u200bideology. \u200bLocke was\u2062 in \u2063the air at \u200dthe \u2064time, but\u2062 so were \u2064Lycurgus and Leviticus. The American system \u2063of government was devised \u200cnot from ideological\u2062 abstractions,\u200d but \u200bfrom experience and compromise.\u201d Despite Jefferson\u2019s Lockean\u200d flourishes, \u2063the American founding\u2063 was imbued with many\u200b non-liberal elements.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062   <\/p>\n<p>Therefore,\u2062 there is\u2064 tension in \u200dDeneen\u2019s conclusion.\u2064 He urges that we\u200c learn\u200c from the\u2062 \u201ccommon-good conservative tradition\u201d\u2064 yet seems unwilling to acknowledge\u200b its\u200d role in \u200dour founding and \u200dConstitution. And so his closing \u2062call to \u201cabandon the ruins\u200c we have \u200dmade \u200c\u2026\u2062 and then\u2064 build \u2062anew\u201d may \u200dbe \u200bread \u200cas either conservative or\u200c radical \u2014 \u200dnot to mention \u200dunclear. \u200dDoes\u2062 Deneen want us\u200b to rebuild and \u2062renew our ancestral political and cultural \u200border,\u200d or \u200dto create a\u200d new order\u2063 for the ages \u200bamid the\u2062 wreck \u2063of\u200d liberalism?<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-dab7977afe01c695cd0fa342998614b7 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" \u200bid=\"fdrlst__b89e9-dab7977afe01c695cd0fa342998614b7\"><\/div>\n<p> \t\t\t\t\t \u2064<hr\u200c class=\"wp-block-separator\"> \u200b  \u200c \t\t\t\t\t \u200b \u200c \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Regime change is necessary at home. Our nation is in ruins, with leaders who are either ignorant or involved in its destruction. However, replacing the elite is challenging; they hold power and connections, even if lacking competence.
