(AP) \u2014 Record global ocean heating has\u200c invaded Florida with a vengeance.<\/p>\n<p>Water\u200c temperatures in the mid-90s\u200b (mid-30s Celsius) are threatening delicate\u2064 coral\u200d reefs, depriving swimmers \u200cof cooling dips, and adding a \u200bbit\u200b more ick to \u2062the Sunshine State\u2019s already\u200c oppressive\u2062 summer\u200d weather. Forecasters are warning of temperatures that, with humidity, will feel like 110 degrees (43 degrees\u200c Celsius) by week\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s not \u2062enough, \u2063Florida is about to get a dose of dust from \u200cAfrica\u2019s Saharan desert\u200b that\u2019s \u200clikely to hurt air \u2062quality.<\/p>\n<h3>Unprecedented Heat Wave Sweeps \u200dthe\u2063 Globe<\/h3>\n<p>The globe is coming \u2062off \u2064a \u200bweek of\u200d heat not\u2063 seen in \u200bmodern \u2063measurements, the World Meteorological \u200dOrganization said\u2062 Monday,\u200b using\u200c data from Japan\u2019s\u200c weather \u2063agency\u200b to confirm\u2064 unofficial records reported\u2062 nearly daily last\u200d week \u2062by \u2063the \u200dUniversity of Maine\u2019s\u200d Climate Reanalyzer. \u200cJapan \u200dreported the global\u200b average \u200dtemperature on \u2063Friday was half\u2064 a degree\u2064 (0.3\u200d degrees Celsius) \u2064warmer\u200b than \u2063its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-in-hot-water-as-ocean-temperatures-rise-along-with-the-humidity\/\" title=\"Florida faces increasing challenges as ocean temperatures and humidity levels rise.\">past\u200d record hottest day<\/a> \u2064in August 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Global\u2062 sea\u200b surface temperatures have \u200cbeen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/under-trump-americans-have-seen-their-best-wage-growth-in-40-years\/\" title=\"Under Trump, Americans Have Seen Their Best Wage Growth In 40 Years\">record high<\/a> since\u200d April,\u2064 and \u2062the \u200dNorth \u200cAtlantic\u200d has \u200cbeen off-the-charts hot since mid-March, meteorologists report\u200d as climate \u2064change is linked \u200dto\u200d more extreme and deadly events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2064 are in \u200duncharted territory and\u200b we can expect more records to fall,\u201d said \u2064WMO director\u200c of \u200bclimate services Christopher\u200c Hewitt.\u200b \u201cThis is\u200b worrying\u2064 news for the\u200b planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s\u2063 Florida\u2019s turn.<\/p>\n<h3>Florida&#8217;s \u200cScorching Waters<\/h3>\n<p>Water temperature \u200bnear\u2063 Johnson\u2064 Key came \u200bclose to 97 \u200ddegrees\u2064 (36.1 degrees Celsius) Monday \u200cevening, \u200caccording to \u200ba National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration \u200bbuoy. Another \u2063buoy had \u200ca reading\u200d close\u2063 to 95 (35 Celsius) near\u2062 Vaca Key a day\u200b earlier. These \u200dare about \u200b5\u2064 degrees warmer\u200b than normal this time \u2062of year, meteorologists said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s \u2062incredible,\u201d said \u200cNational Weather Service meteorologist \u200cAndrew Orrison. \u201cThe \u200cwater\u2062 is so warm\u200c you \u200dreally \u200ccan\u2019t cool off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While\u200b the 95- and 96-degree readings \u2062were in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-cruz-speaks-on-border-crisis-from-banks-of-rio-grande-river\/\" title=\"Sen. Cruz speaks on border crisis from banks of Rio Grande River\">shallow waters<\/a>, \u201cthe water temperatures \u200bare 90 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit around much\u2063 of \u200dFlorida, which is\u200b extremely \u200bwarm,\u201d said University of\u2063 Miami \u200dhurricane researcher Brian McNoldy. He\u200c said his 95-degree pool doesn\u2019t cool him \u2014 it just leaves him wet.<\/p>\n<p>Water temperatures\u2062 across\u2064 the Gulf of\u2062 Mexico \u2063and Southwest Atlantic are 4\u2064 to 5 degrees\u200d (2\u200c to \u20643\u2064 degrees Celsius)\u200d warmer than \u200bnormal,\u200d Orrison said.\u2064 Because \u2064the water is so warm, the air in\u2064 Florida gets more \u2062humid \u200dand\u200c \u201cthat\u2019s making\u2063 things tougher or\u2064 more oppressive for people who are \u2064going\u2063 to be out \u2063and about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The heat dome that baked Texas \u200cand \u2063Mexico\u2064 for\u200d much of\u2063 the \u2062early summer has\u2064 oozed its way to Florida with sunshine, little to no\u2063 cooling clouds or rain, but\u2064 humidity\u2062 worsened\u2064 by the hot oceans,\u2062 Orrison and McNoldy said.<\/p>\n<p>Not only\u200c will\u2062 it\u200b stick around for \u200da while as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/landmark-climate-study-says-melting-arctic-wont-lead-to-more-severe-cold-weather\/\" title=\"Landmark Climate Study Says Melting Arctic Won\u2019t Lead to More Severe Cold Weather\">weather patterns<\/a> seem \u2062stuck\u2062 \u2014\u200c a sign \u200dof \u2063climate \u200dchange, \u200csome \u2063scientists \u2063contend \u2014 \u200c\u201cit may \u200bactually tend\u200c to get \u200ba \u200blittle \u2062bit worse,\u201d\u2063 Orrison\u2064 said, with extra heat and humidity \u200bthat \u200bhas \u2063NOAA \u200cforecasting \u2064a heat index around 110 by the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2064 could be worse.\u200b Air temperatures of 110 are forecast \u2064for the\u200c U.S. Southwest, including\u2063 Arizona, New Mexico, and\u2064 southeast California, \u200dOrrison said. Death Valley should\u200c see highs of 120\u200b to 125\u200b by \u2063the end of the\u200d week, and possibly a highly\u2063 unusual 130.<\/p>\n<p>At Hollywood Beach, south of\u200d Fort \u2064Lauderdale,\u200c Monday\u2019s\u2064 91 degrees \u2062were about average and \u2064Glenn Stoutt said the breeze made \u200chim fine\u200d to do\u2064 lunges\u2062 with\u2064 a 15-pound weighted ball\u200c and\u200d calisthenics \u2062\u2014 though \u2063he wore \u200bshoes on \u200cthe blazing sand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny to watch the new people and the tourists get about halfway out and realize their feet are \u2064getting scorched,\u201d \u200dStoutt\u2064 said. \u201cThey\u200b start \u200crunning,\u2063 but \u200dit\u2063 doesn\u2019t\u2062 matter how fast you run, you need to get \u200dthem in the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Threat to Coral Reefs<\/h3>\n<p>Scientists worry about \u2063the coral in \u200cthat warmed-up water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s \u2064a good chance of heat \u2062stress \u2064accumulating very\u200b early in \u200dthe\u200d season, so we\u200d could be\u200b looking at nasty bleaching,\u201d said\u200d International \u200bCoral \u2062Reef Society\u2019s Mark Eakin, a retired\u200d top\u2063 NOAA coral reef\u2064 scientist. Bleaching \u200cweakens coral; it takes extended\u200c heat to kill it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are already receiving \u200breports \u200bof \u200cbleaching\u2064 from Belize,\u2063 which is very alarming this early\u2062 in the\u200d summer,\u201d \u2064said \u200cscientist Liv Williamson\u200d of the University of Miami\u2019s Coral Reef Futures Lab. She \u200csaid global \u200cprojections\u200b give a 90% \u200bchance for major \u200bbleaching on \u2063many reefs,\u2064 including in Pacific Islands along the \u2064Equator, the eastern tropical\u200c Pacific in Panama, the\u2063 Caribbean coast of \u2062Central America,\u200b and in\u2063 Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis\u2062 is \u200donly July, this\u2064 heat\u2063 will\u200b just keep \u200daccumulating and\u2063 these corals will \u200cbe forced \u200dto deal \u200cwith \u2063dangerously\u2062 warm \u200dconditions\u200b for\u200d much\u2063 longer than is normal,\u201d \u200cWilliamson said in an \u200bemail.<\/p>\n<p>Coral bleaching \u2063and die-offs\u2064 are \u2064becoming more\u200d frequent with climate change, especially\u200d during an \u2063El Nino, \u2062with \u200bAustralia\u2019s\u200d Great\u2063 Barrier \u2063Reef losing half \u2064its coral during \u2063the last supersized El Nino in 2016, Williamson said.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists \u200csay a new El Nino\u2062 is\u200c part of the\u200b reason \u2064for the current\u200c heat, along with\u2062 ever-increasing \u2064warming from\u200b the burning \u200bof coal, oil, and\u200d natural gas.<\/p>\n<h3>Sahara \u2062Dust\u2064 Adds\u200b to \u200dthe Heat<\/h3>\n<p>Then there\u2019s that\u200d Sahara dust.<\/p>\n<p>With\u2063 little\u200c rain to keep the soil grounded, it\u2019s common this time of \u2064year for plumes \u200cof\u200b dust \u200dparticles from\u2064 the Sahara Desert to\u200c blow across the Atlantic on \u2063upper-level winds. It takes \u2062strong \u2062winds to push them all\u2063 the way to Florida, so it\u200c doesn\u2019t \u2063happen often.<\/p>\n<p>One plume settled \u200bover South Florida on Monday, and\u2063 the \u2063next plume was expected \u2064later in the\u2064 week, said Sammy Hadi, a meteorologist for \u2062the National Weather Service\u200b in Miami.\u200c The plumes\u200c typically stay two \u2062to three days \u200band dry the \u2064atmosphere, so there are \u2064fewer \u2063afternoon rains\u200b that are typical for Florida summers.<\/p>\n<p>One plus: sunlight bouncing \u200coff those dust particles produces more\u2062 vivid sunrises and sunsets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn\u2062 general,\u2062 it makes\u200d the\u2062 sunrises and \u200csunsets more\u200b vibrant\u2062 and\u2064 beautiful,\u201d Hadi\u200b said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>like over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (over 38 degrees Celsius), making it even more unbearable for residents and tourists alike.
