The motorist \u2014 later identified as Wesley Taylor, 57 \u2014 then brandished a gun and shot Dunlap in the chest.<\/p>\n<p>Dunlap was able to return fire, killing Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>The trooper, a 13-year veteran of the force, was taken to a local hospital for observation and subsequently released, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for the attack is not known. A July 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/wlos.com\/news\/local\/north-carolina-trooper-shooting-driver-killed-i-26-court-records-wesley-scott-taylor-kentucky-trooper-jeffrey-dunlap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from WLOS indicated that Taylor only had \u201ctraffic citations and violations\u201d in North Carolina, as well as a charge of driving while impaired from 2012 \u2014 but that charge had been dismissed at the time.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was a different matter in Kentucky, where, WLOS reported, \u201cbetween 1984-1990, Taylor was found guilty of charges ranging from aggravated assault, fugitive warrants, forcible sex offenses, and burglary, for which he served time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams said in a statement that no charges would be filed against Dunlap and that his use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/man-uses-gun-turn-tables-robbers-come-atm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deadly force<\/a> was lawful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find that Trooper Dunlap was legally justified to use deadly force against Taylor who shot Trooper Dunlap in the chest at close range with a .44 Magnum semi-automatic pistol,\u201d Williams said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo criminal charges will be filed in this matter and the [North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation] may close this investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cTrooper Dunlap was legally justified to use deadly force . . . In other words, when the DA says there\u2019s nothing to investigate here, there\u2019s nothing to investigate here.<\/p>\n<p>As for Taylor, we\u2019ll never know what kind of lunacy made him pull a gun on a state trooper. We can only be thankful that Dunlap was wearing enough body armor to stop the round.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a reminder of why we need well-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-19-year-old-police-officer-killed-car-chase-suspect-captured-facing-serious-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police officers<\/a>, not desiccated police departments strongarmed by \u201cdefund\u201d units into shifting money to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-unarmed-mental-health-experts-run-violent-criminals-instead-cops-going-get-ugly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental health experts<\/a>\u201d and other forms of intervention to deal with crime.<\/p>\n<p>Will a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-biden-admin-still-holding-tens-of-thousands-of-migrant-kids-with-little-oversight\/\" title=\"Report: Biden Admin Still Holding \u2018Tens Of Thousands\u2019 Of Migrant Kids With \u2018Little Oversight\u2019\">mental health expert<\/a> have enough body armor to stop a .44 Magnum bullet? Will they be able to \u201cde-escalate\u201d a situation with a shooter like Taylor?<\/p>\n<p>Of course not. But that\u2019s what the defunders would have you believe. In their utopia, someone might be able to reason with Taylor. Just back away, man.
