However, oftentimes that presumption is far from reality.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the innate innovation and creativity that had characterized the film industry for more than 100 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fast-furious-actor-blasts-hollywood-knows-trying-devil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood<\/a> has a VFX problem it can no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russians-hold-flashlight-protests-in-support-of-navalny\/\" title=\"Russians hold \u2018flashlight protests\u2019 in support of Navalny\">longer ignore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the explosion of streaming services and VFX-heavy blockbusters that both raised production budgets and now required an exorbitant number of hours on the computer, the special effects crisis and, consequently, the working conditions of VFX artists have only worsened in recent years, according to an in-depth report published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq-magazine.co.uk\/culture\/article\/hollywood-vfx-industry-breaking-point\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GQ<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>One such artist named Yves McCrae, who had designed computer-generated imagery on multiple big-budget projects including \u201cGodzilla,\u201d \u201cBlack Panther\u201d and \u201cStranger Things,\u201d told the men\u2019s magazine of his work on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cats-unmitigated-failure-studio-already-issues-theaters-updated-version-film\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cats<\/a>.\u201d The 2019 musical was notorious for its bad CGI upon release, sparking memes that mocked the film for falling into the uncanny valley.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThere just wasn\u2019t enough time, or enough experienced artists, to give it nearly as much polish as such a VFX-heavy movie like this requires,\u201d McCrae said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew it was going to look horrible. But we were all having a fun time working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Though McCrae looked back on the film and laughed, others could not say the same about their VFX nightmares.<\/p>\n<p>Many employees of VFX houses were reportedly driven to the edge due to workplace abuse, tight deadlines and unreasonable hours, sometimes totaling up to 70-hour workweeks. The burnout was so extreme that some artists would cry in bathrooms as they worked into the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, others could not leave at the end of the day before their work was finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been worked to the point where I felt like I was going to die,\u201d an employee posted on Reddit. Another likened the working conditions to \u201cpsychological torture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, big-time movie studios requesting their help don\u2019t make it easy on the VFX designers either. One even called out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disneys-dirty-trick-noticed-twitter-users-change-film-industry-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel Studios<\/a>, the Disney-owned subsidiary known for rushing CGI shots on its packed slate of theatrical films and streaming series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking on Marvel shows is what pushed me to leave the VFX industry,\u201d Dhruv Govil tweeted last year. \u201cThey\u2019re a horrible client, and I\u2019ve seen way too many colleagues break down after being overworked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Govil worked on \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/spider-man-actor-says-not-like-hollywood-business-really-scares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/a>\u201d before quitting Hollywood altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Once dominating the box office with groundbreaking visuals, Marvel has worse CGI today than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/where-have-all-the-sex-scenes-gone\/\" title=\"Where Have All the Sex Scenes Gone?\">movies released<\/a> over a decade ago.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height: 500px\" data-embed-height=\"500\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/marvelmemes\/comments\/wmfbf0\/such_a_downgrade_in_the_last_13_years\/\">Such a downgrade In the last 13 years<\/a><br \/>\nby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/BozZombiesArnie\">u\/BozZombiesArnie<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/marvelmemes\/\">marvelmemes<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Other related problems plaguing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/martin-scorsese-hits-back-the-art-of-cinema-is-being-devalued\/\" title=\"Martin Scorsese Hits Back: The Art Of Cinema Is Being Devalued\">movie business<\/a> are inexperienced artists getting projects for which they are unqualified, not enough experienced artists on a given project and directors who either don\u2019t or won\u2019t understand the VFX creative process. All these difficulties fall under the coined term \u201cpixel f***ed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more context surrounding the issue, please watch the video below.<\/p>\n<p>Although the VFX crisis has taken a toll on Hollywood, there are still a few cinematic bright spots this year that utilize the technology well.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the newly released \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/top-guns-tom-cruise-set-save-hollywood-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mission: Impossible \u2014 Dead Reckoning Part One<\/a>\u201d and the upcoming \u201cDune: Part Two\u201d appear to implement CGI in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/we-knew-it-was-going-to-look-horrible-hollywood-employees-admit-why-todays-films-look-terrible\/\" title=\"Hollywood insiders confess: Today's films look awful, as expected.\">creative ways alongside practical stunts<\/a> and effects \u2014 or in the case of \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d no CGI shots were used at all.<\/p>\n<p>Films like these show it\u2019s possible for VFX to look good or even spectacular, but Hollywood doesn\u2019t seem to care about its workers or its craft at the moment.
