(Perrigo via AP, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/abril-elfi\">Abril Elfi<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>10:00 AM \u2013 Thursday, July 13, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>The first non-prescription birth control pill in the United States, Opill, was given the green light on Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be sold over-the-counter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>About two months after a third-party advisory council unanimously recommended making Opill available without a prescription, the FDA took action by making this available with no age restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>This approval is a significant victory for medical organizations that have long advocated for an over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pill, such as the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">OPILL \ud83d\udc4f IS \ud83d\udc4f FDA \ud83d\udc4f APPROVED! \ud83d\udc4f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aEdYMFFaLq\">pic.twitter.com\/aEdYMFFaLq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Opill\u00ae (@opill_otc) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/opill_otc\/status\/1679472552719073283?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Perrigo, the product\u2019s manufacturer released a statement after the announcement. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s approval is a groundbreaking expansion for women\u2019s health in the U.S., and a significant milestone towards addressing a key unmet need for contraceptive access,\u201d Perrigo said. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Frederique Welgryn, Perrigo\u2019s global vice president for women\u2019s health, stated during a news conference on Thursday that Perrigo is \u201ccommitted to ensuring that Opill is affordable and accessible to people who need it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the FDA released a statement on Opill and its potential effect on unintended pregnancies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cNonprescription availability of Opill may reduce barriers to access by allowing individuals to obtain an oral contraceptive without the need to first see a health care provider,\u201d the FDA mentioned. \u201cAlmost half of the 6.1 million pregnancies in the U.S. each year are unintended.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One hormone, progestin, can be found in Opill, which is also referred to as the \u201cmini-pill.\u201d The FDA granted its initial prescription approval in 1973. <\/p>\n<p>In the statement it\u2019s reported that for the pill to be effective it needs to be taken at the same time everyday. It also may cause side effects like dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, irregular bleeding, cramps or bloating.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of March 2024, retailers should have over-the-counter versions of Opill available at drug, grocery, and convenience stores as well as online.
