That\u2019s on top of an imminent <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/07\/actors-strike-contract-talks-fail-sag-aftra-to-launch-pickets-1235436031\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAG-AFTRA<\/a> strike, which will cause actors to take a knee as well.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the summer\u2019s can\u2019t-miss movies missed by a country mile, including \u201cThe Flash\u201d and \u201cIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.\u201d The streaming revolution\u2019s price tag is proving too rich for even the biggest studios to stomach.<\/p>\n<p>Steven Spielberg\u2019s Amblin Partners just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/amblin-layoffs-1235533667\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slashed 20 percent<\/a> of its workforce. That\u2019s on top of Disney giving pink slips to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/disney-will-begin-mass-layoffs-this-week-ceo-announces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7,000 employees<\/a> following its dark descent into wokeism.<\/p>\n<p>The king of the streaming platforms, Netflix, said goodbye to at <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/netflix-layoffs-fired-jobs-lost-1235301553\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">least 450 employees last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Bleak Picture<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>The entertainment industry in aggregate can\u2019t afford to keep producing content at the pace of recent years, as evidenced by the astounding financial losses reported and cost-cutting campaigns underway at Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global and to a lesser degree Comcast.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bidenomics is making all of the above so much worse. What\u2019s an industry to do? Tighten their belts, for starters. Fire woke staffers deemed indispensable five minutes ago. Trash films before they even have a chance to fail. Memory-hole woke content that drew so few eyeballs there\u2019s little hope of any return on investment.<\/p>\n<p>Diversity may be our strength, but it doesn\u2019t necessarily pay the bills in La La Land. It helps explain why four Hollywood diversity gurus just got the ax in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/diversity-fatigue-hollywood-loses-4-040326615.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a span of two weeks<\/a>. That\u2019s the kind of news cycle that might coax studios to reconsider their decisions and offer a full-throated apology.<\/p>\n<p>Not this time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hardly the only example of studios swallowing hard and ignoring woke essentials. Paramount+ tried to revive the \u201cGrease\u201d brand with a prequel series for the streaming service. \u201cGrease: Rise of the Pink Ladies\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/tv\/news\/willow-series-canceled-disney-plus-1235555335\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaned heavily<\/a> into woke dictates, from white supremacy to LGBTQ themes.<\/p>\n<p>Did it matter that those issues weren\u2019t publicly explored in the 1950s, the period in question? Apparently not, but so few people watched it that the platform did more than cancel it. Paramount brass wiped it off the platform, presumably for tax purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Something similar <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/tv\/news\/willow-series-canceled-disney-plus-1235555335\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">happened<\/a> to the woke \u201cWillow\u201d reboot. Disney+ similarly embraced LGBTQ themes into the \u201880s film, but audiences aggressively ignored the TV update. The Mouse House not only ended the show after just one season but removed it, \u201cPink Ladies\u201d style, from its content lineup.<\/p>\n<p>Disney+ also <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/disney-streaming-crater-tax-rort-scam-writeoff-delete-1850604861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yanked<\/a> \u201cCrater,\u201d an original film with plenty to say about class inequality.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix and then-HBO Max jumped on the trend early, extinguishing presumably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/netflix-axes-ibram-x-kendi-show-called-antiracist-baby-and-other-woke-projects\/\" title=\"Netflix Axes Ibram X. Kendi Show Called \u2018Antiracist Baby\u2019 \u2014 And Other Woke Projects\">woke projects<\/a> before they even reached the public. Netflix\u2019s content deal with Meghan Markle led to \u201cPearl,\u201d an animated series about a girl who finds inspiration from women leaders of yore.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-61294978#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">canceled<\/a> it before anyone had a chance to see it. The same held true for the king of woke\u2019s first Netflix project, an animated version of \u201cAnti-Racist Baby.\u201d Ibram X. Kendi\u2019s book adaptation also got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/22738500\/dave-chappelle-the-closer-daphne-dorman-trans-controversy-comedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nixed<\/a> before production could be completed, as did his proposed anti-racism documentary.<\/p>\n<p>The streaming giant may have accidentally set the anti-woke cost-cutting in motion. Netflix aired Dave Chappelle\u2019s comedy special \u201cThe Closer\u201d near the end of 2021, a routine including jokes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/22738500\/dave-chappelle-the-closer-daphne-dorman-trans-controversy-comedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deemed<\/a> \u201ctransphobic\u201d by elements of the Left.<\/p>\n<p>Liberal activists howled, demanding Netflix pull the film while supporters protested at the company\u2019s headquarters. The company could have buckled, delivered a woke-approved apology, and severed ties with the funnyman.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Netflix brass <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-business-dave-chappelle-ted-sarandos-arts-and-entertainment-d3b5a4329479757e8675d1caa9ab0554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backed<\/a> Chappelle, extended its ties with the comedian, and essentially, told activists to pound sand. Keeping a profitable star like Chappelle on the platform meant more than appeasing a micro-minority of critics.<\/p>\n<p>HBO Max infamously shelved its \u201cBatgirl\u201d film project despite spending upwards of $90 million on it and nearly completing it. That superhero film also appeared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11078313\/Holy-Wokery-Batgirl-TOM-LEONARD-investigates-Warner-Bros-90million-superhero-film-axed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embrace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/8-wonderful-ways-to-stream-movies-for-free\/\" title=\"8 Wonderful Ways To Stream Movies For Free\">woke storytelling<\/a><\/a> tics according to early reports.<\/p>\n<p>Woke storytelling was all the rage, but it never attracted a mass audience like \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d or \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home.\u201d Actors might spout woke platitudes to the press, but they rarely think about how it might impact the bottom line of their respective bosses.<\/p>\n<p>Studio heads don\u2019t have that luxury. They see the shocking numbers ricocheting around the industry, note how many woke projects fail to provide a return on investment, and see films with little to no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/as-double-strike-looms-hollywood-can-no-longer-afford-the-high-price-of-going-woke\/\" title=\"As 'Double Strike' approaches, Hollywood can't afford going woke anymore.\">agenda outperforming socially aware fare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When Hollywood was seemingly flush with cash during the Trump era and before the streaming bills came due, it could afford to be as woke as possible. Show after show, movie after movie leaned into woke lectures, identity politics and other far-left trappings.<\/p>\n<p>If the \u201cTerminator\u201d franchise went extinct over a little-seen woke sequel, so be it. Other films and shows would more than make up for those losses.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the losses are coming from all over. And it could get worse before it gets better.<\/p>\n<p>Woke is wonderful \u2014 on paper. Virtue signaling makes stars feel good without accomplishing much, if anything.
