(Photo by SAUL LOEB \/ AFP) (Photo by SAUL LOEB\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Illinois Law Requires Landlords to Rent or Sell Property to Undocumented Migrants<\/h2>\n<p>OAN\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/roy-francis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roy Francis<\/a><br \/>Updated 8:14 AM \u2013 Thursday, July 13, 2023<\/p>\n<p>A new Illinois law will require landlords to rent or sell property to undocumented migrants, adding immigration status to the list of protected classes in the Illinois Human Rights Act.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.gov\/legislation\/billstatus.asp?DocNum=1817&#038;GAID=17&#038;GA=103&#038;DocTypeID=SB&#038;LegID=146640&#038;SessionID=112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SB1817<\/a> was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.) last month and is set to go into effect at the beginning of 2024. The law will add \u201cprotections in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dhr.illinois.gov\/#:~:text=The%20Illinois%20Department%20of%20Human,as%20sexual%20harassment%20in%20education.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Illinois Human Rights Act<\/a> for housing regarding immigration status protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to The Center Square, more than 11,000 migrants have moved into Illinois in the last year, with the majority coming from Central and South America. Michael Glasser, who is a member of the Neighborhood Building Owner\u2019s Alliance said that he is not worried because this is a normal trend.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always been a large number of refugees coming into this country before this particular crisis,\u201d Glasser said. \u201cAnd in the past, the capacity has been there to absorb these folks, so I\u2019m not so worried that this will be a single factor that is going to create a huge increase in rent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He said a possible solution to the immigrant crisis and housing issues in the state of Illinois would be to employ the migrants in the housing industry.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s extreme interest by many of us in the industry in having labor and skilled labor who can take care of some of our maintenance and painting and landscaping,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The effort to protect the status of undocumented migrants in Illinois with regards to housing was led by State Senator Ann Gillespie (D-Ill.) who had argued that the new law would make sure that no person Is \u201cunjustly denied housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-to-force-tenants-to-accept-illegal-immigrants-as-tenants\/\" title=\"Illinois mandates acceptance of undocumented immigrants as tenants.\">law sets clear boundaries<\/a>, protecting the rights of immigrants and ensuring that financial institutions and service providers cannot engage in discriminatory practices,\u201d Gillespie said. \u201cPutting these protections in place will promote fairness to ensure people are not unjustly denied housing. By making this change, we are breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for immigrants to establish homes and contribute to our communities. Someone\u2019s background should not disqualify them from buying or renting property.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Democrat Senator also explained that the bill will prohibit third <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-to-force-landlords-to-accept-illegal-immigrants-as-tenants\/\" title=\"Illinois mandates landlords to accept undocumented immigrants as tenants.\">party loan modification providers<\/a> from making changes to any of their terms of service based on the immigration status of the person applying for a loan.<\/p>\n<p>The recently signed law was a part of several bills that were signed by the Illinois governor which include a law which would grant undocumented migrants the ability to obtain a state driver\u2019s license. This would replace the Temporary Visitor\u2019s Driver\u2019s License in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>The governor said that this a \u201csignificant step\u201d towards \u201cmaking our roads safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is a significant step in eliminating the barriers to opportunity that many undocumented immigrants face,\u201d Pritzker said in a statement, according to Fox 32. \u201cWe\u2019re ensuring every eligible individual can obtain a driver\u2019s license, making our roads safer, decreasing stigma, and creating more equitable systems for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new laws will go into effect on January 1<sup>, <\/sup>2024.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
