I feel like a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulder, and I couldn\u2019t be happier,\u201d Beeks, 51, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JordanOnRecord\/status\/1679216878114185217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1679216878114185217%7Ctwgr%5Eb77009aa22b0b4d64e0c67ea138da341338720ff%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wusa9.com%2Farticle%2Fnews%2Fnational%2Fcapitol-riots%2Fjudge-acquits-jesus-christ-superstar-actor-on-all-counts-in-jan-6-case-james-beeks-judge-mehta-donovan-crowl-stewart-rhodes%2F65-22133fba-4e87-4d68-af02-5dfcaa4f7153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in an interview after the decision, adding that he didn\u2019t know much about the Oath Keepers prior to joining the group in the weeks leading up to the protest over the 2020 election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI made a mistake. It has ruined my reputation, especially in the entertainment industry that I worked so hard to build. I was at the apex of my career,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/07\/james-beeks-broadway-actor-acquitted-january-6-capitol-riot-charges-1235436147\/\">said<\/a> in another statement after the ruling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beeks played the character of Judas in \u201cJesus Christ Superstar\u201d and has appeared in several other Broadway shows, including \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Cafe,\u201d \u201cRagtime,\u201d \u201cAida,\u201d and \u201cKinky Boots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Mehta, Beeks was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/national\/capitol-riots\/judge-acquits-jesus-christ-superstar-actor-on-all-counts-in-jan-6-case-james-beeks-judge-mehta-donovan-crowl-stewart-rhodes\/65-22133fba-4e87-4d68-af02-5dfcaa4f7153\">unaware<\/a> of any plan to storm the U.S. Capitol, so the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/roger-stone-announces-he-will-sue-those-who-arrested-him-and-put-him-in-front-of-a-kangaroo-court\/\" title=\"Roger Stone Announces He Will Sue Those Who Arrested Him and Put Him In Front of a Kangaroo Court\">conspiracy charge<\/a> was irrelevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf he didn\u2019t know what others intended, he couldn\u2019t intend to do it,\u201d lawyer Greg Hunter said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mehta did find Beeks\u2019 co-defendant, Donovan Crowl, guilty of two charges after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/broadway-actor-acquitted-after-january-6-related-conspiracy-charge\/\" title=\"Broadway actor cleared of January 6 conspiracy charge.\">stipulated bench trial<\/a>. Crowl was also a member of the Oath Keepers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A lawyer for Crowl said he was in Washington, D.C., on January 6 to exercise his First Amendment rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHis conduct was no different than that of many Americans who\u2019ve gone to Congress to peacefully protest and have not been charged with felonies,\u201d lawyer Carmen Hernandez said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May, Oath Keepers founder <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stewart Rhodes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/oath-keepers-leader-gets-longest-january-6-sentence-to-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced to 18 years in prison<\/a> for seditious conspiracy and other charges. Federal prosecutors accused Rhodes of \u201cterrorism\u201d while Rhodes said he was a political prisoner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m a political prisoner, and like President Trump, my only crime is opposing those who are destroying our country,\u201d he said before he was sentenced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He also said that no member of the Oath Keepers took part in violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and argued that defendants are being \u201cgrossly overcharged.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Beeks, famed for his role in &#8220;Jesus Christ Superstar,&#8221; has been cleared of January 6 charges.
