(Photo by Scott Olson\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Man Paralyzed in Traffic Stop Wins $20 Million Settlement Against Police Department<\/h2>\n<p>OAN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br \/>1:47 PM \u2013 Wednesday, July 12, 2023<\/p>\n<p>A man in Yuba City, California, who was paralyzed after being thrown to the ground during a traffic stop, has won a $20 million settlement case against the city\u2019s police department, authorities revealed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Gregory Gross, a Yuba City resident and Army veteran, filed a lawsuit against the police department in 2022 after officers employed \u201cpain compliance\u201d methods while expressing disbelief when the man repeatedly shouted out, \u201cI can\u2019t feel my legs.\u201d According to the footage presented by Gross\u2019s lawyers, police officers also ignored Gross when he murmured, \u201cI can\u2019t breathe,\u201d while being held face down on the lawn outside of a hospital.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cMr. Gross, we are done with your silly little games,\u201d said an officer at the time of the incident, which was shown in the body camera footage.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gross was accused of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and causing a slow-speed collision in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>After the officers threw Gross\u2019s body to the ground, he realized soon after that they had shattered his neck. When the injured man eventually consulted with doctors, it was brought to his attention that he would need two operations to fuse his spine. Gross claimed that the cops\u2019 use of force rendered him unable to move or care for himself and that he now requires 24-hour nursing care for the remainder of his life.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe are not against the police,\u201d said Attorney Moseley Collins, who represented Gross. \u201cWe are for the police, but we are against police brutality when it occurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The payout is one of the largest in California history for police malpractice. In May, the state agreed to pay $24 million to the family of a man who died in police custody while being detained by three cops reportedly attempting to extract a blood sample.<\/p>\n<p>Yuba City will also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/traffic-stop-gone-wrong-paralyzed-army-veteran-wins-20m-settlement\/\" title=\"Paralyzed Army veteran awarded M in traffic stop mishap.\">begin randomly evaluating officers\u2019 bodycam footage<\/a> and assessing use of force instances as part of the settlement, according to police Chief Brian Baker. During a press conference on Tuesday, Baker apologized to the paralyzed man.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been in my thoughts since this tragedy was brought to my attention,\u201d Baker said. \u201cOn April 12<sup>th<\/sup>, 2020, we missed the mark. And for that, Mr. Gross, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gross expressed that he believes police reform is critical in preventing what happened to him from happening again to anyone else. He claimed that he would be donating $20,000 of the awarded money to the California Peace Officers\u2019 Memorial Foundation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad that they did something and took it serious,\u201d Gross said on Tuesday. \u201cI couldn\u2019t understand how someone could be in a position of authority and was acting like that and treating another human being like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gross had also sued Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville and the University of California, Davis Medical Center in 2021, arguing that their conduct and negligence contributed to his worsening health.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation in September 2021 prohibiting police from employing particular facedown techniques that have resulted in several accidental fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
