Over the past 20 years, some of the most highly anticipated superhero movies have primarily come from two studios: Marvel and DC Warner Bros. But they\u2019re not alone \u2014 other studios have also produced very memorable superhero flicks, helping to make the genre the most popular and profitable around the world.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of our favorite caped (and non-caped) crusaders, we compiled our very own list of the top seven superhero movies from the last 20 years that you need to add to your watch list.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, this is an unscientific examination of the best superhero movies. Not definitive, just ours. Place them in whatever order you choose, but we think each of these is a true gem.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with number one and work our way down.<\/p>\n<h2>#1: \u201cCaptain America: The Winter Soldier\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Our top offer comes from Marvel, the 2014 action\/adventure sequel to \u201cCaptain America: The First Avenger.\u201d Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7SlILk2WMTI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Captain America: Winter Soldier<\/a>\u201d centers on Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/chris-evans\">Chris Evans<\/a>, and his mysterious relationship with a pal from the past, Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier,\u201d a description on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1843866\/\">IMDb<\/a> reads.<\/p>\n<p>The sequel is not only incredibly shot and well written, but takes the audience on a thrill ride with one twist after another. <a href=\"https:\/\/movieweb.com\/captain-america-the-winter-soldier-best-mcu-movie-why\/?newsletter_popup=1\">Movie Web<\/a> wrote that it is the \u201cBest MCU Movie of All Time\u201d and said that it was \u201ca one-of-a-kind movie experience\u201d for Marvel fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinter Soldier\u201d created a more \u201cintimate look at the humanity within the superhero\u201d aside from its \u201cexpertly choreographed fight scenes and larger-than-life action set piece,\u201d the outlet noted. It also took \u201cpleasure in the quieter, more human moments between its characters,\u201d for example Rogers and Barnes bond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite its comics\u2019 pro-nationalistic origins, the movie was not afraid to raise questions about the validity and morality of the political structures of power that seek to govern and supposedly protect its citizens,\u201d the outlet added. \u201cIt is a concept that still rings true today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaptain America: The Winter Soldier\u201d may not have been the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rita-wilson-reveals-the-major-80s-movie-role-tom-hanks-turned-down\/\" title=\"Rita Wilson spills: Tom Hanks rejected big '80s film.\">biggest box office success<\/a> for Marvel, but to date, it has brought in well over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt1843866\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\">$700 million worldwide<\/a> for the franchise.<\/p>\n<h2>#2: \u201cIron Man\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The first movie in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe was 2008\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8ugaeA-nMTc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iron Man<\/a>.\u201d Directed by a relatively unknown actor-turned-filmmaker Jon Favreau, \u201cIron Man\u201d quickly became the standard template for how to make a superhero movie. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/robert-downey-jr-opens-up-about-the-worst-thing-that-happened-to-him\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Downey Jr.<\/a> plays billionaire inventor Tony Stark, who transforms into the unlikely ironclad hero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil,\u201d a description on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0371746\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMDb<\/a> read.<\/p>\n<p>One reviewer <a href=\"https:\/\/reelrundown.com\/movies\/Film-Review-Iron-Man-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cthe film also offers a new twist on the evolution of the big-screen superhero. Unlike most of his colleagues, Stark himself is not imbued with super powers or any sort of magical ability. He is empowered by conscience, backed up by technological supremacy\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/insufferable-gwyneth-paltrow-slammed-after-sharing-daily-wellness-routine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a> and Terrence Howard round out the cast of \u201cIron Man,\u201d helping to bring in a hefty lifetime total of $585 million worldwide at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt0371746\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>#3: \u201cThe Avengers\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Four years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/marvel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvel<\/a> dropped \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eOrNdBpGMv8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Avengers<\/a>.\u201d Despite there being numerous other films featuring our favorite superheroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and Thor, teaming up to defeat evils around the world like Thanos, this first \u201cAvengers\u201d stands out among the rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarth\u2019s mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity,\u201d a description on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0848228\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMDb<\/a> read.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/woke-feminist-joss-whedon-attacks-jordan-peterson-emily-zanotti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joss Whedon<\/a>, the 2012 film deals with a variety of themes including teamwork, leadership, \u201covercoming individual interests to form a team and working together to achieve a shared goal,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@codeinprogress\/lessons-we-can-learn-from-the-avengers-2012-movie-32cdb9ec078c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one person<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Avengers\u201d performed phenomenally well at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt0848228\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a>, earning more than $1.5 billion worldwide over its lifetime.<\/p>\n<h2>#4: \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Released in theaters in 2008, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EXeTwQWrcwY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Dark Knight<\/a>\u201d finally gave fans of the caped crusader the chance to learn just how the superhero called Batman came to be. As much as we loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/internet-implodes-amid-reports-new-batman-james-barrett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Pattinson<\/a> as the tortured superhero in the 2022 film \u201cThe Batman,\u201d it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/christian-bale-might-return-as-batman-on-one-condition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Bale\u2019s<\/a> portrayal of Bruce Wayne, aka, the Dark Knight, that is forever etched in our minds as the hero of Gotham City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0468569\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMDb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Christopher Nolan, \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d deals with the age-old battle of good vs evil, as Bale\u2019s character explained at one point in the film, \u201cI\u2019ve seen what I have to become to fight men like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2016\/mar\/04\/why-christian-bale-will-always-be-the-best-batman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opined<\/a>, \u201c\u2026Bale gave us a Batman we could believe in, in more ways than one. Crucially the character is never overplayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The action crime thriller was a big hit for DC Warner Bros. at the worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt0468569\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a> where it earned just over $1 billion globally life-to-date.<\/p>\n<h2>#5: \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Released in 2014, director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/james-gunn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Gunn<\/a> created one of the greatest superhero films of all time with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d96cjJhvlMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardians of the Galaxy<\/a>\u201d out of a group of characters who would never have been seen as heroes on their own. In this Marvel film lead by stars like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chris-pratt-sends-message-to-guardian-of-the-galaxy-fans-after-third-film-hits-number-one-at-box-office-worldwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Pratt<\/a>, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Zoe Saldana, we learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2015381\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_8_nm_0_q_Guardians%2520of%2520the%2520Galaxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about<\/a> \u201ca group of intergalactic criminals\u201d who \u201cmust pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGOTG\u201d might not be a movie all families would take their kids to see, but it is a film about a group of lost individuals who find each other and come together to become a family, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tor.com\/2017\/04\/28\/guardians-of-the-galaxy-is-a-story-about-finding-and-choosing-your-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one writer<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Pratt \u2014 who plays Peter Quill \u2014 and the rest of the \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d don\u2019t \u201cso much jest about their scars as they play them off and refuse to recognize the extent of their damage,\u201d the writer added. And it is \u201cprecisely that damage that ties these five misfits together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-top-seven-superhero-movies-and-why\/\" title=\"Top 7 Superhero Movies and Why\">rag-tag action\/adventure killed<\/a> it at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt2015381\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a> and ended up earning a total of $773,350,147 worldwide over its lifetime.<\/p>\n<h2>#6: \u201cSpider-Man 2\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Out in theaters in 2004, Marvel picked filmmaker Sam Raimi once again to direct the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chris-noth-edited-from-and-just-like-that-finale-amid-sexual-abuse-allegations\/\" title=\"Chris Noth Edited From \u2018And Just Like That\u2019 Finale Amid Sexual Abuse Allegations\">highly-anticipated sequel<\/a> to the 2002 hit movie \u201cSpider-Man,\u201d also directed by Raimi, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1s9Yln0YwCw\">Spider-Man 2<\/a>.\u201d Actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/holland-garfield-and-maguire-recreate-viral-spider-man-meme-to-promote-no-way-home-digital-release\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tobey Maguire<\/span><\/a> who plays Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0316654\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_Spider-Man%25202\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is<\/span><\/a> \u201cbeset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a brilliant scientist named Doctor Otto Octavius.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this \u201cSpider-Man\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/spiderman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movie,<\/a> Peter has to learn that the dangers of being a superhero and his love for Mary Jane, played by Kirsten Dunst, do not mix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe film\u2019s dark vision of power as a curse and super heroism as a stoic moral obligation (rather than a glamorous and gratifying day job) is remarkable for the genre, even radical,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2020\/9\/13\/spider-man-2-unpopular-opinion\/#:~:text=The%20film's%20message%20is%20clear,a%20while%2C%20life%20is%20good.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one writer<\/a> noted. \u201cEqually remarkable is the elegance and artistry with which this theme is presented and developed throughout the course of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpider-Man 2\u201d was produced by Columbia Pictures at Sony and earned more than $788 million at the global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt0316654\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a> during its lifetime.<\/p>\n<h2>#7: \u201cShazam!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Our last offering comes from DC Warner Bros., a film not a whole lot of people went to the theaters to see, and that\u2019s a shame, because the 2019 movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-oD7B7oiBtw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shazam!<\/a>\u201d was a ride from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by David F. Sandberg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dark-place-shazam-star-says-he-almost-didnt-try-out-for-role-because-he-was-undergoing-life-saving-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zachary Levi<\/a> played Billy Batson, aka Shazam, in a movie that deals with \u201cA newly fostered young boy [who] in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy,\u201d a description on IMDb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0448115\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is the kind of movie you not only want to take your kids to see, but look forward to as you all enjoy the thrill of seeing how a young person who\u2019s been lost the majority of his young life finds his way and a family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough \u2018Shazam!\u2019 didn\u2019t have \u2026 as much grit as \u2018The Dark Knight,\u2019 both films do have one thing in common \u2014 a good story,\u201d one writer <a href=\"https:\/\/studybreaks.com\/tvfilm\/shazam-revitalizes-superhero-movies\/?utm_content=bd-true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>. \u201c\u2018The Dark Knight\u2019 had themes of justice, identity and duty, while \u2018Shazam!\u2019 highlights identity, family and bravery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DC film scored $367,799,011 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt0448115\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a> worldwide during its entire run in theaters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>make the genre a global phenomenon.
