(Photo by Theo Wargo\/Getty Images for Tribeca Film Festival)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br \/>5:33 PM \u2013 Tuesday, July 11, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>Two documents recently discovered in the late Aretha Franklin\u2019s cupboard and sofa have sparked rifts in the family after the famous musician\u2019s death in 2018.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>A jury ruled on Tuesday that the singer\u2019s handwritten will, discovered beneath her sofa cushions and in a cupboard, is a legal Michigan will, a vital step in a battle that has now pitted three of her four sons against each other.<\/p>\n<p>It is a victory for Franklin\u2019s second and youngest children, Edward and Kecalf, whose attorneys claimed that documents dated 2014 should take precedence over a 2010 will discovered around the same time in a locked cabinet at the Queen of Soul\u2019s home in Detroit, Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Clarence, Franklin\u2019s oldest child, lives in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-nazi-secretary-charged-with-complicity-in-murder-of-thousands-flees-care-home-ahead-of-trial\/\" title=\"Former Nazi Secretary, Charged With Complicity In Murder Of Thousands, Flees Care Home Ahead Of Trial\">elderly care home<\/a> in Michigan and is uninvolved in the issue.<\/p>\n<p>According to his guardian\u2019s lawyer, they \u201chave reached a settlement that gives Clarence a percentage of the estate without regard to the outcome of the will contest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Aretha Franklin died five years ago at the age of 76 from pancreatic cancer, she did not leave behind any formal, typed out will. Both found documents, with scribbles and difficult-to-read paragraphs, were later discovered in 2019 when her niece, Sabrina Owens, searched the house for paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2010 version of the will, Both Owens and Franklin\u2019s third eldest child, Ted White II, were named as co-executors or personal representatives of the estate. However, Owens resigned as a representative of her aunt\u2019s estate in 2020, blaming family feuds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cGiven my aunt\u2019s love of family and desire for privacy, this is not what she would have wanted for us, nor is it what I want\u2026 I love my cousins, hold no animosity towards them, and wish them the best,\u201d Owens wrote in a letter filed in a Detroit court.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Franklin\u2019s assets, which were previously estimated at $80 million when she died, were reduced to $6 million owing to more current estimates and unpaid taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The late musician\u2019s estate administrators have reportedly been paying bills, resolving tax arrears, and earning money from song royalties and other intellectual property. However, the will conflict remains unresolved.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 and 2014 versions were slightly altered but still appear to suggest that Franklin\u2019s four sons would split money from music and copyrights.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2014 will, Kecalf Franklin and his grandkids would inherit his mother\u2019s primary property in Bloomfield Hills, which was assessed at $1.1 million when she died. It is now priced considerably higher.<\/p>\n<p>The earlier version of the will said that Kecalf, 53, and Edward, 64, \u201cmust take business classes and get a certificate or a degree\u201d in order to profit from the inheritance. However, that provision has now been retracted from the 2014 version.<\/p>\n<p>Ted White II, who famously played guitar with Aretha, testified against the 2014 will, claiming that his mother would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/handwritten-papers-found-in-aretha-franklins-couch-is-a-valid-will-jury-says\/\" title=\"Jury confirms handwritten papers in Aretha Franklin's couch as a valid will.\">generally complete crucial documents \u201cconventionally<\/a> and legally\u201d with the help of an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Don Wilson, an entertainment lawyer who represented Franklin for over 30 years, told NBC that as part of her estate preparation, he recommended she establish a will and a trust.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cBut she was a very private person, and I think she didn\u2019t want to share that information with another individual, such as an attorney.
