Americans Should Be First In Line For American-Made Vaccines.\">regulatory red tape<\/a> but a commercial marketplace problem that is \u201cfundamentally unique to antimicrobials, driven by reimbursement and access challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those roadblocks, she said, often drain biotech companies of their funds even after their products have been approved. However, she added that the federal government could fix the problem by enacting reimbursement reforms and implementing pull incentives to counter the risks of developing new antibiotic drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Calling on Congress to step in, she added, \u201cEvery year we wait to address this crisis is another year more patients are at risk for losing their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Fragility of Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For Melanie Lawrence of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, the threat of antimicrobial resistance is dire as she is living with cystic fibrosis.<\/p>\n<p>A progressive and incurable genetic disease, cystic fibrosis causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that can lead to blockages, infections, and damage to affected organs. Those born with the condition today have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/2021-on-track-to-surpass-2020-as-nations-deadliest-year\/\" title=\"2021 on Track to Surpass 2020 as Nation\u2019s Deadliest Year\">estimated life expectancy<\/a> of 56 years, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cff.org\/managing-cf\/understanding-changes-life-expectancy\">Cystic Fibrosis Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Ms. Lawrence, 43, is determined to live every moment to its fullest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/experts-say-threat-of-drug-resistant-bacteria-will-grow-unless-congress-steps-in\/\" title=\"Drug-resistant bacteria will continue to pose a growing threat unless Congress intervenes, warn experts.\">spend hours taking medications<\/a>, doing physical therapy, exercise, meditation, breath work, all while raising a very active 12-year-old, trying to create as many meaningful memories with him as I can,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chicago-suffering-officer-shortage-cant-find-recruits-people-dont-want-to-be-the-police\/\" title=\"Chicago Suffering Officer Shortage, Can\u2019t Find Recruits: \u2018People Don\u2019t Want To Be The Police\u2019\">told committee members<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After years of treatment with various antibiotics, the bacteria in Ms. Lawrence\u2019s lungs have become resistant to nearly all antibiotics\u2014except for tobramycin. Unfortunately, due to hearing and kidney damage, she sustained during a clinical trial, that drug is also off the table.<\/p>\n<p>Now, managing her symptoms and maintaining the best possible quality of life are her goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the security of effective antibiotics to help me heal, I find myself living with chronic fear and anxiety about when the bacteria residing in my lungs will act out or when another infection will take me away from truly living,\u201d she said. \u201cOn a deeper level, I am often navigating a humbling loss of control, loss of autonomy, and a deep subconscious fear of death\u2014of leaving my son without his primary caregiver, the person who knows him best and loves him without limits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Experts warn that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a growing public health risk, endangering vulnerable patients.
