The move marked the first time an administration had issued such a designation to a substance under the SUPPORT Act of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Xylazine, a nonopioid sedative used by veterinarians during surgeries, is not approved for human use.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, between January 2019 and June 2022, the monthly percentage of overdose deaths from xylazine-laced fentanyl saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us-overdose-deaths-from-xylazine-laced-fentanyl-have-surged-since-2019-cdc_5366183.html\">276 percent spike<\/a> across 20 states and the District of Columbia, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data released on June 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we thought fentanyl was dangerous, fentanyl combined with xylazine is even deadlier,\u201d Dr. Gupta said, noting that the latter drug produces several serious side effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cXylazine produces deep flesh wounds in users that require extensive medical intervention,\u201d he said. \u201cThe deep skin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-outlines-plan-to-curb-deaths-from-deadly-fentanyl-xylazine-combination\/\" title=\"White House reveals strategy to reduce fatalities caused by lethal fentanyl-xylazine mix.\">soft tissue wounds<\/a>, abscesses, and tissue necrosis are often independent of injection sites and are challenging to treat, and they carry stigma. As a physician, I\u2019ve never seen wounds this bad at this scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drug, he noted, also slows the user\u2019s heart rate, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-unveils-plan-to-stop-surge-in-tranq-dope-deaths\/\" title=\"White House reveals strategy to halt rise in 'Tranq Dope' fatalities.\">dangerously low blood pressure levels<\/a> and complicating efforts to reverse the overdose with medications like Narcan.<\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s plan to stop the surge focuses on six pillars of action: testing; data collection; evidence-based prevention, harm reduction, and treatment; supply reduction; scheduling, and research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to get fentanyl combined with xylazine off our streets and out of our communities,\u201d said Neera Tanden, White House domestic policy adviser. \u201cThis plan is a key step towards that goal, building on our work to meet our broader goal to tackle the opioid and overdose epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Plan of Attack<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Gupta said the administration\u2019s plan was developed over the past three months by various federal agencies and departments, and that implementation would require a \u201cwhole of society\u201d effort.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the first pillar, he said testing for xylazine is already being conducted in communities by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/51-lawmakers-warn-biden-immigration-order-could-make-border-crisis-catastrophic-overnight\/\" title=\"51 Lawmakers Warn Biden Immigration Order Could Make Border Crisis \u2018Catastrophic Overnight\u2019\">local law enforcement officials<\/a> but not frequently enough \u201cto get a national picture of the threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government efforts on that front will include standardizing forensic testing practices and developing rapid test strips for use in medical and community settings.
