(AP Photo\/John Minchillo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/taylor-tinsley\">Taylor Tinsley<\/a><br \/>12:55 PM \u2013 Tuesday, July 11, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>A cargo ship fire that killed two New Jersey firefighters in Port Newark last week has officially been extinguished.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference on Tuesday, the Coast Guard said investigators will now break down the ship for scrap to figure out what caused the massive blaze.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cOverall the salvage process could easily be one to two months,\u201d said Coast Guard Captain Zeita Merchant.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The motor vessel was carrying about 1,200 vehicles that were to be refurbished and sold in Africa. There was no report of any cargo containing lithium ion batteries.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe superstructure that you\u2019re looking at of the ship is essentially a parking garage with ramps and levels in which cars are parked,\u201d port director Beth Rooney said. \u201cSo what we had burning were components and parts of cars\u2026 before they\u2019re shipped for transport the gasoline tanks all but have a spit in them\u00a0 in order to get them off the ship, batteries are disconnected etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/two-firefighters-die-while-fighting-fire-on-new-jersey-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The fire<\/a> took six days to put out. It claimed the lives of two heroic firefighters that became trapped on board and later died at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>45-year old Augusto \u201cAugie\u201d Acabou and 49-year old Wayne \u201cBear\u201d Brooks were both Newark Firefighters assigned to Engine 16. Acabou served for over nine years and Brooks was a veteran with the department for more than 16 years. Officials emphasized the department is dangerously understaffed and currently has 80 vacancies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is this fire department has been neglected,\u201d said Newark Fire Union President Michael Giunta. \u201cWe are not adequately trained to meet the demands of the City of Newark\u2026 the only thing that saves firefighters are more firefighters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Giunta said when he started the job 24 years ago the City of Newark had over 600 firefighters and now they\u2019re down to just under 400. He also said their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cargo-ship-fire-in-port-newark-officially-extinguished\/\" title=\"Port Newark cargo ship fire now officially extinguished.\">large capacity fire boat wouldn\u2019<\/a>t start on the day of the Port Newark fire and shed light on outdated equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, teams were not adequately trained for last week\u2019s cargo fire.
