The parents appealed the decision, and Instagram restored the account, @StopAB957, on Friday. A spokeswoman for Instagram parent company Meta, formerly known as Facebook, said the account had been incorrectly flagged as violating the website&#8217;s community guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The account has no violations at current,&#8221; the spokeswoman told the <i>Washington Free Beacon<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram&#8217;s targeting of @StopAB957, which boasts just 113 followers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stopab957\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4 posts<\/a>, came the same day the company launched a fast-growing Twitter alternative, Instagram Threads, that free speech watchdogs have already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12280359\/Mark-Zuckerbergs-Threads-app-censoring-people-questioning-gender-ideology.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> of censoring conservative users and critics of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/va-democrats-target-pastor-of-teacher-put-on-leave-for-refusing-to-affirm-kids-trans-identity\/\" title=\"VA Democrats Target Pastor Of Teacher Put On\u00a0Leave For Refusing To Affirm Kids\u2019 \u2018Trans Identity\u2019\">left-wing gender ideology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to say [the suspension of @StopAB957] was censorship because we had barely said anything,&#8221; said Nicole Pearson, an attorney who contributed information about the legislation for the Instagram account. &#8220;They didn&#8217;t even let us say anything to censor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Three of the account\u2019s posts criticized A.B. 957, which would require judges in custody disputes to disfavor parents who fail to affirm their child&#8217;s gender identity. The fourth featured a video of a parents&#8217; rights activist questioning Gov. Gavin Newsom (D.) about California&#8217;s policies <a href=\"https:\/\/sd11.senate.ca.gov\/news\/20220930-senator-wiener%E2%80%99s-historic-bill-provide-refuge-trans-kids-and-their-families-signed-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">encouraging<\/a> sex changes for minors. The account has made no new posts since it was reinstated.<\/p>\n<p>A volunteer who manages @StopAB957 and who asked to remain anonymous for fear of professional retaliation said that Instagram never responded to her questions about why exactly the account was suspended. In an email to the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>, Meta suggested the suspension was a technical error rather than ideological overreach.<\/p>\n<p>Meta has leveraged its two billion users to make Instagram Threads the fastest-growing website ever, drawing more than 100 million sign-ups in less than a week. In the launch <a href=\"https:\/\/about.instagram.com\/blog\/announcements\/threads-instagram-text-feature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a>, Meta promised to keep Threads &#8220;positive&#8221; in implicit contrast with the unrestrained discourse allowed on Twitter under billionaire owner Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/05\/technology\/threads-app-meta-twitter-killer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the <em>New York Times<\/em> last week that Meta decided to create Threads specifically to respond to &#8220;product changes and decisions&#8221; that Musk made at Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now it&#8217;s just very friendly in there,&#8221; Mosseri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/09\/briefing\/threads.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> of Threads on Thursday. &#8220;Now, we&#8217;ll see what it looks like when the gates blow open and anyone and everyone can join. But the vibes are good in there right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meta cofounder Mark Zuckerberg, who in 2019 strongly <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2019\/10\/mark-zuckerberg-stands-for-voice-and-free-expression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defended<\/a> free speech, has acknowledged that the company censored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/zuckerberg-says-establishment-asked-facebook-censor-covid-misinfo-ended-true-undermines-trust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">true information<\/a> about COVID-19 at the behest of experts, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-62688532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stories<\/a> about Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop after an FBI warning.
