Erdogan has stood in the way of Sweden joining the alliance for more than a year over many different concerns.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cPresident Erdogan has agreed to forward the Accession Protocol for Sweden to the Grand National Assembly as soon as possible and work closely with the assembly to ensure ratification,\u201d said Stoltenberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic day,\u201d Stoltenberg added, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-vaccinated-g7-leaders-share-awkward-unmasked-elbow-bumps\/\" title=\"WATCH: Vaccinated G7 Leaders Share Awkward Unmasked Elbow Bumps\">world leaders gathered<\/a>, ahead of a NATO summit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>President Joe Biden spoke with Ergodan while flying aboard Air Force One on Sunday. Biden \u201cconveyed his desire to welcome Sweden into NATO as soon as possible,\u201d according to the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The E.U. dismissed the idea of tying Sweden\u2019s NATO bid to enlarging the E.U.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cYou cannot link the two processes,\u201d said Dana Spinant, a spokesperson for the European Commission.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A spokesperson for the National Security Council stated that the U.S. had \u201calways supported\u201d Turkey\u2019s acceptance into the E.U.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have claimed that Turkey\u2019s main focus was the completion of a $20 billion deal for American F-16 fighter jets, which was backed by the Biden administration but faced opposition on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cIn reality, this is his [Erdogan] negotiating style,\u201d said Asli Aydintasbas, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington. \u201cHe knows Turkey will not get into the EU. But he wants Europeans to also put something on the table \u2014 and match U.S. efforts to free up F-16 sales to Turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Anna Wieslander, director for Northern Europe at the Atlantic Council, said \u201cit\u2019s possible that Erdogan could be staging this so he could be the good guy, saving the summit by giving a unilateral green light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hungary was the only other country to hold out against supporting Sweden\u2019s bid.
