It also requests the removal of 32 YouTube videos that feature the anthem, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/25\/google-could-exit-hong-kong-for-good-as-it-faces-high-stakes-censorship-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> reported last week.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Xiaomeng Lu, director of consulting firm Eurasia Group\u2019s geotechnology practice, believes it is highly probable that Google will exit the People\u2019s Republic of China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-thanks-you-for-the-apology-mr-cena-now-if-you-dont-mind-could-you-please-do-it-again-in-a-ladys-voice\/\" title=\"China Thanks You for the Apology, Mr. Cena. Now, If You Don\u2019t Mind, Could You Please Do It Again in a Lady\u2019s Voice?\">special administrative region<\/a> in the near future, as the company previously left the Chinese mainland in 2010.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis is the same episode being replayed,\u201d Lu said. \u201cIt may take a while \u2014 it may not be next month. But I think the eventuality will kick in, whether it\u2019s in a few months or in a year, a couple of years. I don\u2019t think this will take five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2020, China passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-kills-hong-kong-pro-democracy-newspaper\/\" title=\"China Kills Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Newspaper\">controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/canadian-olympic-committee-warns-athletes-not-to-criticize-china\/\" title=\"Canadian Olympic Committee Warns Athletes Not to Criticize China\">national security law<\/a><\/a> that allowed the Chinese Communist Party to crack down on protesters in Hong Kong more easily, resulting in numerous arrests. The recent restraining order on U.S. tech firms is yet another example of the city&#8217;s diminishing autonomy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s government claims that the protest anthem incites \u201cothers to commit secession\u201d and aims to ban the song in order to \u201c[safeguard] national security and [preserve] the dignity of the national anthem,\u201d which is titled \u201cMarch of the Volunteers.\u201d Because Hong Kong falls under the People\u2019s Republic of China, it is also considered the city\u2019s official anthem, according to the CCP.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A court hearing is scheduled for July 21 to evaluate the government\u2019s injunction on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Google has previously faced pushback from the Chinese government when it allowed the \u201cGlory to Hong Kong\u201d protest song to appear at the top of search engine results in the city. The CCP demanded that Google bury the song\u2019s search results after it was played in place of the national anthem at a rugby tournament last year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the past noncompliance with the CCP, it remains uncertain how Google will respond to the court order as the company has not issued an official statement on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>A Google representative told the New York Post that the tech giant is \u201ccommitted to making information accessible to users,\u201d but did not specifically address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-jailed-canadian-pastor-tim-stephens-released-after-international-attention\/\" title=\"WATCH: Jailed Canadian Pastor Tim Stephens Released After International Attention\">upcoming court date<\/a> in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>If Google were to restrict its services to Hong Kong citizens, it would face economic repercussions from losing an entire market of consumers, which would negatively impact its Android operating system, Google Play Store, and YouTube, according to tech policy consultant Niki Christoff.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy hunch is that there might be a discussion about a historic stance on free speech versus the business consequences of doing the takedown, and maybe some of the press consequences of doing it,\u201d Christoff said, before admitting Google would eventually comply. \u201cBut dollars to donuts, I think they just take it down and continue operating.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stefano Bonini, an expert on behavioral finance, also weighed in on the matter.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe question that I think they\u2019re weighing on the board right now is, \u2018Yeah, we have an increasing cost of staying there, but it\u2019s still an important market,&#8217;\u201d Bonini said. \u201c\u2018Do we want to [exit] and totally cede to the pressures of an authoritarian government and curb the freedom of speech?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently, it appears that Google will comply with the Chinese government&#8217;s wishes.
