As a result, the crew shut down one of the engines.<\/p>\n<p>Although there was no visible smoke or fire from the engine, maintenance personnel discovered evidence of a fuel leak, as well as heat damage and soot on the engine cases and external surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers were able to safely exit the plane in Newark, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA stated that the flight crew activated the engine fire extinguishers as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p>United Airlines is currently conducting its own investigation into the incident, while Boeing has referred all questions to the NTSB and United.<\/p>\n<p>The engine in question was manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric and Safran.
