(Photo by Sarah Silbiger\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/geraldyn-berry\">Geraldyn Berry<\/a><br \/>1:45 PM \u2013Friday, July 7, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>For the first time in more than 20 years an Alzheimer\u2019s medicine, from Eisai and Biogen (BIIB), has received standard FDA clearance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The new Alzheimer\u2019s drug, lecanemab, is being sold by its manufacturer Eisai under the brand name Leqembi.<\/p>\n<p>Following the FDA\u2019s clearance on Thursday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) declared full coverage of the medication, Leqembi. An external FDA advisory council previously unanimously endorsed the medication, a twice-monthly infusion for early-stage Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Leqembi\u2019s first approval was conditional, which hindered Eisai and Biogen\u2019s ability to make money. Medicare patients were unable to acquire the medication unless they were prepared to pay out of pocket. When the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) decided to pay for the therapy, the pressure started to lessen.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the medication is intended for people who are suffering from the disease\u2019s early stages. Medicare has stated that it will only pay for patients who are registered in a national registry that monitors patient side effects and outcomes over time to cover the drug\u2019s costs, which total more than $26,000 per year. A handful of the hundreds of thousands of Alzheimer\u2019s patients who are qualified for the medication, according to some professionals and patient advocacy groups, may be able to receive it.<\/p>\n<p>CEO of patient advocacy group, the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, Joanne Pike, said in a statement that access to the drug is one of the association\u2019s top priorities<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cPeople living with this fatal disease deserve the opportunity to discuss and choose, with their doctor and family, whether an FDA-approved treatment is right for them,\u201d Pike said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Before reviewing findings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fda-grants-first-full-approval-for-an-alzheimers-drug\/\" title=\"FDA approves first Alzheimer's drug.\">late-stage clinical study earlier<\/a> this year, the organization previously gave Leqembi fast permission. The research showed that the medicine had moderately slower cognitive decline in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-k-challenge-study-will-infect-young-participants-with-coronavirus\/\" title=\"U.K. \u2018Challenge Study\u2019 Will Infect Young Participants With Coronavirus\">study participants<\/a> than a placebo, but it also had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/skittles-takes-out-full-page-ad-urging-fans-not-to-throw-candy-after-harry-styles-incident\/\" title=\"Skittles Takes Out Full Page Ad Urging Fans Not To Throw Candy After Harry Styles Incident\">potentially harmful side effects<\/a>, such as brain swelling and hemorrhage.<\/p>\n<p>Leqembi would only be covered under fast approval, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, if the patient was enrolled in a randomized clinical study, which none were.
