Eighty-five years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/months-after-telling-us-we-didnt-need-them-cdc-begs-americans-to-just-wear-the-mask\/\" title=\"Months After Telling Us We Didn\u2019t Need Them, CDC Begs Americans To \u2018Just Wear the Mask\u2019\">construction workers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/06\/world\/europe\/munich-synagogue-hitler-germany.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came across<\/a> pieces of it in a river just a few miles away.<\/p>\n<p>The synagogue, built in 1887, was leveled by the Nazis because Hitler believed it was an \u201ceyesore\u201d for the city, the BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-66107481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pieces-of-munich-synagogue-discovered-after-hitler-ordered-its-destruction-85-years-ago\/\" title=\"Munich Synagogue Fragments Found Despite Hitler's 85-Year-Old Destruction Order\">construction crew uncovered columns<\/a> from the synagogue as well as a partial stone tablet with the Ten Commandments inscribed on it while working on a dam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew the imposing building as a child before it was torn down, and I never thought that parts of it could have survived the destruction, much less for them to resurface almost a century later,\u201d 90-year-old Charlotte Knobloch, the president of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/06\/world\/europe\/munich-synagogue-hitler-germany.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-taking-regeneron-drug-remdesivir-therapy-for-coronavirus-diagnosis-ex-wh-doctor-explains\/\" title=\"Trump taking Regeneron drug, Remdesivir therapy for coronavirus diagnosis: ex-WH doctor explains\">told<\/a><\/a> The New York Times in an email.<\/p>\n<p>The synagogue, one of two in Munich at the time, was one of the first synagogues in Germany that was destroyed by the Nazis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yadvashem.org\/holocaust\/this-month\/april\/1927.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to The World Holocaust Remembrance Center.<\/p>\n<p>The construction crew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/06\/europe\/munich-synagogue-discovery-scli-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discovered<\/a> the remnants of the synagogue on June 28 during a job to refurbish a small dam on the Isar River, according to the BBC. The artifacts were roughly five miles from where the building once stood. The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/06\/world\/europe\/munich-synagogue-hitler-germany.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that the artifacts were 15 to 25 feet below the surface. Purin added that the discovery of the tablet with the Ten Commandments is \u201cespecially touching\u201d because \u201call worshippers look to it\u201d during services.<\/p>\n<p>The rubble from the synagogue was placed in the yard of the company that carried out the demolition, the Times reports. In 1956, it was used \u2014 along with other debris from bombed buildings \u2014 to reinforce a dam in the river.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese stones are part of Munich\u2019s Jewish history,\u201d Knobloch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-66107481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cI really didn\u2019t expect fragments to survive, let alone that we would see them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon learning of the orders to destroy the synagogue, the Jewish community in Munich worked through the night to preserve items, including Torah scrolls and ritual objects, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center says. Just a few hours later, the synagogue was demolished.<\/p>\n<p>Five months after the Munich synagogue\u2019s destruction, the Nazi pogroms known as Kristallnacht occurred, also known as \u201cthe night of broken glass,\u201d in which Jewish synagogues, homes, and businesses were destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Today, a department store occupies the space where the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-66107481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beautiful<\/a>\u201d synagogue once stood. Authorities say the remains of the place of worship will be returned to the Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extermination of Jewish citizens during the Nazi era began with the destruction of Jewish culture,\u201d Munich Deputy Mayor Katrin Habenschaden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/06\/europe\/munich-synagogue-discovery-scli-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cThe demolition of the main synagogue on Hitler\u2019s orders marked the beginning of exclusion, persecution and destruction. The fact that today we can find remains of the once cityscape-defining magnificent building is a stroke of luck and touches me deeply.
