Firefighters were still attempting to extinguish the blaze Thursday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to authorities, the fire erupted on the 10<sup>th<\/sup> floor of the 12 story cargo ship and made its way to the top. The vessel was carrying an estimated 5,000 vehicles that were going to be refurbished and sold overseas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Multiple vehicles were already on fire by the time firefighters arrived. Teams heroically rushed in. Sometime after, a mayday call went out saying Acabou had died.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being under extreme conditions, Acabou\u2019s brothers and sisters of the Newark Fire Department refused to leave him behind and made multiple efforts to bring him out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThey were able to bring Firefighter Acabou out,\u201d said Chief Rufus Jackson of the Newark Fire Department. \u201cThen, we had another mayday, which was Firefighter Wayne Brooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Five other firefighters, three from Newark, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/two-n-j-firefighters-killed-in-cargo-ship-fire\/\" title=\"Two firefighters from New Jersey die in cargo ship fire.\">suffered injuries including heat exhaustion<\/a>, burned feet, and respiratory distress. One remained hospitalized with critical injures as of Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Mayor Ras Baraka (D-N.J.) said, \u201cI saw the kind of acts of bravery and comradery that\u2019s unparalleled. It\u2019s very very very traumatic for all of us here in the city of Newark and we ask everybody to pray.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The fire chief noted that Newark firefighters were trained to fight blazes on cruise ships or other vessels, but not for ones that contain vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
