The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/date-set-for-trial-of-former-president-trump-in-classified-documents-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initial date of August 14 was set by<\/a> U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump nominee, who was appointed to preside over the documents case.<\/p>\n<p>Smith said that Trump would be presumed innocent until proven guilty and have a \u201cspeedy trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former president, currently campaigning to be the Republican nominee in 2024, has said the charges against him are politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ridiculous and baseless indictment of me by the Biden administration\u2019s weaponized department of injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country,\u201d Trump said in his first speech since the indictment against him was announced. \u201cMany people have said that; Democrats have even said it.
