The chemicals are believed to possibly cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-brazilian-president-bolsonaro-hospitalized-in-florida-with-abdominal-pain\/\" title=\"Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro Hospitalized in Florida With Abdominal Pain\">numerous health problems<\/a> in humans, including increased cancer risk, high cholesterol, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-year-of-living-fearfully\/\" title=\"The Year of Living Fearfully\">high blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/health-effects\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per<\/a> the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cUSGS scientists tested water collected directly from people\u2019s kitchen sinks across the nation, providing the most comprehensive study to date on PFAS in tap water from both private wells and public supplies,\u201d Kelly Smalling, USGS research hydrologist and lead author of the study, said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe study estimates that at least one type of PFAS \u2014 of those that were monitored \u2014 could be present in nearly half of the tap water in the U.S. Furthermore, PFAS concentrations were similar between public supplies and private wells,\u201d Smalling added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At least 45% of the nation\u2019s tap water could have one or more types of the chemicals known as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PFAS?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PFAS<\/a>, according to a new USGS study. Other products that can contain PFAS include shampoo, nail polish, candy wrappers, pizza boxes, and microwave popcorn bags, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/pfas\/health-effects\/exposure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the CDC. Even products for babies are not immune from forever chemicals \u2014 they have been detected in clothing, toys, and bedding, the Daily Mail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-11390811\/Toxic-forever-chemicals-childrens-clothes-bedding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the more than 12,000 different types of PFAS, the USGS only monitored 32 because many forever chemicals cannot be detected with tests available today, the government agency explained. They are referred to as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d because of the prolonged period of time they take to break down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As for the most commonly found forever chemicals detected, the USGS says PFOs, PFBS, PFHxS, and PFOA appeared regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Americans who live in urban areas are more likely to encounter PFAS in drinking water, the study says. PFAS exposure was higher in the Great Plains, Great Lakes region, Central and Southern California, and the Eastern Seaboard. During the research, which the USGS says is the first study of its kind, tap water samples were tested at 716 locations \u201crepresenting a range of low, medium and high human-impacted areas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the Environmental Protection Agency, forever chemicals \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/our-current-understanding-human-health-and-environmental-risks-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may lead to<\/a>\u201d decreased fertility, developmental delays in children, behavioral changes, accelerated puberty, hormonal interference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dont-eat-this-if-you-have-it-in-your-pantry\/\" title=\"Don\u2019t Eat This If You Have it In Your Pantry\">decreased immune response<\/a>, and increased risk of obesity, among other potential health effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPFAS can get into drinking water when products or wastes containing them are disposed of, used or spilled onto the ground or into lakes and rivers,\u201d the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/pfasresponse\/faq\/categories\/pfas-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> notes. \u201cPFAS move easily through the ground, getting into groundwater that is used for some water supplies or for private drinking water wells.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent study by the USGS revealed that around 45% of tap water in the US may contain harmful &#8220;forever chemicals,&#8221; including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
