Since time immemorial \u2014 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-politics-newhampshire\/new-hampshire-sets-date-for-presidential-primary-idUSN2121200820071121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1920<\/a>, which practically qualifies as antediluvian in the TikTok era \u2014 the state of New Hampshire has hosted the first presidential primary in the nation. Meanwhile, Iowa holds the first caucus; as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/01\/29\/464804185\/why-does-iowa-vote-first-anyway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a> noted, because of the state\u2019s convoluted method of picking candidates, the Democratic National Committee made the caucus the first contest in the nation in 1972, which is considered the first year of the modern primary selection process.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, these two dates have remained stuck in the political firmament: Iowa first, then New Hampshire as the first primary. In fact, New Hampshire law mandates that its primary occur seven days before any other state\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The problem, at least as Democrats framed it, was that both Iowa and New Hampshire are too white to be representative of America. Thus, last December, the Democratic Party\u2019s rules and bylaws commission handed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidens-got-big-problem-early-primary-state-line-rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first primary to South Carolina<\/a>, a state where the Democrat-voting base is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jim-crow-2-0-is-imaginary-and-divisive\/\" title=\"\u2018Jim Crow 2.0\u2019 Is Imaginary \u2013 And Divisive\">heavily black<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There was also another reason, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/05\/magazine\/democratic-national-committee-2024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> pointed out in a Wednesday article aptly titled \u201cThe D.N.C. Has a Primary Problem\u201d: \u201cJoe Biden performed terribly in each of those contests [Iowa and New Hampshire] in 2020, hitting his stride only in larger states with fewer white voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thus decreed the Biden administration: South Carolina was going first. What could go wrong, particularly with no serious challengers throwing their hats in the ring to challenge the 81-year-old president?<\/p>\n<p>Pretty much everything, as the Times pointed out. Not only has Biden alienated voters in New Hampshire and Iowa \u2014 both technically swing states, the former more than the latter \u2014 both still plan to hold their candidate-picking affairs before South Carolina. And if Joe Biden refuses to put his name on the ballot there, there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rfk-jr-looks-likely-win-first-2-dem-primary-season-contests-states-prepare-defy-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain vaccine skeptic<\/a> with a family name that holds significant clout that\u2019s polling in double-digits nationally and would love to notch victories in the first two races in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>As the Times noted, \u201cNew Hampshire, the state that prides itself on its Live Free or Die motto, has declared that it will vote first anyway, setting up a clash with the D.N.C. that could widen to publicly embarrass Biden \u2014 who, assuming he coordinates with the D.N.C. on its new calendar, would not be on the New Hampshire ballot in this scenario \u2014 handing the incumbent president a shocking statewide defeat.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Do you think RFK Jr. has a chance of beating Biden?<\/h3>\n<form id=\"firefly-poll\" onsubmit=\"ff_poll_submit(event)\">\n\t<label><input type=\"radio\" name=\"answer\" value=\"yes\">Yes<\/label><br \/>\n\t<label><input type=\"radio\" name=\"answer\" value=\"no\">No<\/label><br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\t<input type=\"submit\" value=\"Vote\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-poll-disclaimer\">\n\tCompleting this poll entitles you to The Western Journal news updates free of charge. He concedes that putting South Carolina first is a pipe dream, at least for 2024, or he gives two potential victories to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-day-7-year-old-rfk-jr-brought-dead-animal-oval-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RFK Jr.<\/a> \u2014 a competent enough guy on the campaign trail when he\u2019s not talking about how <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/rfk-jr-offers-grab-bag-045700866.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5G<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12215961\/Mark-Cuban-slams-Joe-Rogan-not-challenging-RFK-Jr-claims-WiFi-causes-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WiFi<\/a> are carcinogenic radioactive time bombs or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-hampshire-prepared-to-publicly-embarrass-biden-hand-him-shocking-statewide-defeat\/\" title=\"NH ready to 'shame' Biden, deliver stunning statewide loss.\">hawking debunked studies linking vaccines<\/a> to autism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that New Hampshire is going to keep the first-in-the-nation primary,\u201d said Ray Buckley, chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, adding \u201cthe question only is whether or not the president is going to put his name on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to come after New Hampshire, but it\u2019s not going to be successful. So why go through all that pain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, liberal New Hampshire radio talk show host D. Arnie Arnesen said that while she understands the arguments against holding the first two contests in Iowa and New Hampshire \u2014 \u201cWe\u2019re too white, too rich, too privileged\u201d \u2014 she also said the attempt to shift the first primary to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/prayer-breaks-trump-makes-unexpected-stop-south-carolina-burger-shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Carolina<\/a> was a dumb move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey knew the Republicans were going to Iowa and New Hampshire anyway. Why change now?\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s no upside. Not one iota of benefit for Joe Biden. Nothing. No benefit to Joe, no benefit to the Democrats. They shot themselves in the foot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the \u201cprimary problem\u201d isn\u2019t just fixed by conceding defeat to reality. Jaime Harrison, chairman of the Democratic National Committee and the party\u2019s senatorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gop-senator-powerfully-stumps-biden-nominee-cmon-dont-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nominee<\/a> in South Carolina in 2020, is equally adamant that his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pelosi-on-defending-herself-from-rioters-im-pretty-tough-im-a-street-fighter-would-hit-them-with-stilettos\/\" title=\"Pelosi On Defending Herself From Rioters: \u2018I\u2019m Pretty Tough,\u2019 I\u2019m A Street Fighter,\u2019 \u2018Would\u2019 Hit Them With Stilettos\">home state vote<\/a> first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople thought early on, Oh, God, Jaime\u2019s the chair of the D.N.C., so therefore he\u2019s going to put his finger on the scale for South Carolina. And everybody will tell you, I was evenhanded in this. The only thing that I wanted was that South Carolina would remain, because I think it\u2019s earned its spot as an early state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNational Geographic said that 90 percent of African Americans can trace one of their ancestors to South Carolina. In our primary, 50 to 60 percent of the people who vote in the Democratic primary will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/i-listened-to-barack-obama-and-bruce-springsteens-new-podcast-so-you-dont-have-to\/\" title=\"I Listened To Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen\u2019s New Podcast, So You Don\u2019t Have to\">black folks<\/a>. Think about how powerful this is, that the descendants of those enslaved people will be the very first people in this country to determine the most powerful person on the face of this planet. That\u2019s transformative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, what would also be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/parental-warning-wokeism-spotted-plain-sight-transformers-show-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transformative<\/a> is if Biden were to lose a primary or caucus as a sitting president and go on to be re-elected.<\/p>\n<p>Only two other presidents have lost states during the primary process while in the Oval Office. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/flashback-gerald-fords-eerie-prediction-soon-come-true-kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gerald Ford<\/a> \u2014 who was never elected to either vice president or president when he took over for Richard Nixon, and therefore vulnerable to a challenge \u2014 lost 24 states in 1976 to challenger Ronald Reagan, then the former governor of California. He would go on to lose the general election to former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, Carter \u2014 considered too conservative for his party and too incompetent for everyone else \u2014 faced a challenge from another descendant of Camelot, human alcohol sponge Sen. Edward Kennedy, who won 12 states. Carter, like Ford, went on to lose in the general election \u2014 this time in a rout by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/interview-reagan-gave-3-days-leaving-office-debunks-nyts-ridiculous-biden-comparison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reagan<\/a>, who managed to take the GOP nomination with relative ease.<\/p>\n<p>Even a strong challenger who doesn\u2019t win a state is considered poisonous to a sitting president; George H.W. Bush never lost a state to populist challenger Pat Buchanan, but the former Nixon aide\u2019s candidacy was considered one of the reasons Bill Clinton was able to win in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is best summed up this way by The Times\u2019 Barkan: \u201cThe persistent quandary, which no version of the primary calendar could resolve, is how to account for the various long-range challenges of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/twj-founder-democratic-party-just-confirmed-michelle-obama-will-nominee-nobody-noticed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democratic Party<\/a>. A first-in-the-nation South Carolina primary lends black moderates, a pivotal Democratic constituency, the kind of clout that many believe they deserve. White rural voters \u2014 the sort who need to be courted in Iowa and New Hampshire \u2014 have not proved loyal to the Democratic brand. But there are only so many of them that Democrats can afford to lose in a general election. New Hampshire, which Biden carried by less than 10 points in 2020, is not guaranteed to be eternally blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question, in other words, isn\u2019t whether or not you alienate part of the base \u2014 it\u2019s what part of the base you alienate. If Biden chooses to forego Iowa and New Hampshire, it\u2019d give RFK Jr. two wins and grounds to challenge the president to a debate \u2014 a forum which seldom makes the president look good, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/seemingly-confused-biden-told-debate-audience-fight-segregation-record-player-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">or even coherent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was, at one point, an avoidable disaster for the Democrats. They didn\u2019t have to fiddle with anything when it came to the primary system.
