He was succeeded by the current mayor, Eric Adams, also a Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>The two pointed to several specific events when they felt their marriage took a hit. One is the COVID pandemic in 2020, while de Blasio was still mayor. Another was de Blasio\u2019s run for president in 2020, which McCray called \u201ca distraction,\u201d but she supported him anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the kind of thing where you can break ranks,\u201d McCray said. \u201cThat\u2019s part of the difficulty of being part of a package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio is convinced their marriage would not have encountered its current difficulties if he had never been elected mayor, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything was this overwhelming schedule, this sort of series of tasks,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cAnd that kind of took away a little bit of our soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h3>Living Arrangements<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>During their \u201ctrial separation,\u201d the couple will continue to live \u201cfor the time being\u201d in the Park Slope townhouse where they raised their two children, now adults.<\/p>\n<p><h3>A Love Story<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio met McCray when both worked for David Dinkins, New York\u2019s first black mayor from 1990 to 1993. At the time, McCray identified as a lesbian and was not immediately open to her future husband\u2019s attempts to pursue her, but she eventually fell in love with him, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was very easy to fall in love with,\u201d she told the Times.<\/p>\n<p>The two married in 1994 in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>However, de Blasio said he continued to ponder his wife\u2019s sexual orientation.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the guy who took the chance on a woman who was an out lesbian and wrote an article called \u2018I Am a Lesbian,\u2019\u201d de Blasio told the Times, \u201cthere was a part of me that would at times say, \u2018Hmmm, is this like a time bomb ticking? Is this something that you\u2019re going to regret later on?\u2019 So I always lived with that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h3>Overcoming Challenges Together<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Since his election to mayor in 2013, de Blasio and McCray have weathered their share of criticism and scandals together.<\/p>\n<p>While he was mayor, de Blasio was criticized for making McCray extremely influential within City Hall, including boosting her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/candace-owens-teases-presidential-run\/\" title=\"Candace Owens Teases Presidential Run\">potential run<\/a> as Brooklyn borough president.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, McCray\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-nyc-leftist-mayor-bill-de-blasio-splitting-from-wife-who-identified-as-lesbian\/\" title=\"Former NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio and his wife, who identified as a lesbian, are separating.\">city-run 0 million mental health initiative<\/a>, called ThriveNYC, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/new-york\/city-hall\/story\/2019\/02\/27\/with-opaque-budget-and-elusive-metrics-850m-thrivenyc-program-attempts-a-reset-873945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> for operating without much scrutiny or metrics to measure its success.<\/p>\n<p>Just last month, the city\u2019s Conflicts of Interest Board ordered the former mayor to pay nearly $500,000 in reimbursements and fines for having his security detail accompany him on trips during his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-next-hunter-kamala-harriss-stepdaughter-cashes-in-on-biden-presidency\/\" title=\"The Next Hunter?
