Cori Bush of Missouri \u2014 a member of the \u201csquad\u201d of far-left lawmakers \u2014 demonstrated her apparent lack of knowledge of American history, on Independence Day no less, when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-on-border-crisis-i-should-be-flattered-people-are-coming-because-they-know-bidens-a-good-guy\/\" title=\"Biden On Border Crisis: \u2018I Should Be Flattered People Are Coming\u2019 Because \u2018They Know Biden\u2019s A Good Guy\u2019\">made false claims<\/a> about the Founders and slavery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn\u2019t recognize Black people as human,\u201d Bush tweeted Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is a great day to demand Reparations Now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn\u2019t recognize Black people as human.<\/p>\n<p>Today is a great day to demand Reparations Now <\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cori Bush (@CoriBush) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoriBush\/status\/1676246695045218305?\">July 4, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Let\u2019s examine what she wrote.<\/h3>\n<p>The committee of five men tasked with drafting the Declaration of Independence were Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman of Connecticut and Robert Livingston of New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson penned the first draft of the Declaration, with Adams and Franklin, primarily, making over 80 changes to the document, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/jefferson\/jeffdec.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library of Congress<\/a>. So together these men wrote the document.<\/p>\n<p>Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/opinion\/506782-anti-slavery-revolutionaries-who-practiced-what-they-preached\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never owned<\/a> a slave in his life and opposed the institution, calling it a \u201cfoul contagion in the human character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While serving as president in 1801, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilderlehrman.org\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-pdfs\/T-00921.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> to abolitionists, \u201cI wish you success in your benevolent endeavors to relieve the distress of our fellow creatures [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">black people<\/a>], and shall always be ready to cooperate with you, as far as my means and opportunities can reasonably be expected to extend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherman \u2014 the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jud.ct.gov\/LawLib\/History\/Sherman.htm#:~:text=Roger%20Sherman%20is%20the%20only,the%20United%20States%20in%201787.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> only Founder<\/a> to sign all four of America\u2019s founding documents (the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation and the Articles of Association) \u2014 also never owned a slave.<\/p>\n<p>He even <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/opinion\/506782-anti-slavery-revolutionaries-who-practiced-what-they-preached\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposed<\/a> a tax on slaves, stating to do so would imply they were property rather than human beings.<\/p>\n<p>Sherman biographer Mark David Hall <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=dISJoojLszUC&#038;pg=PA81&#038;lpg=PA81&#038;dq=Sherman+%E2%80%9Cconsistently+opposed+slavery+because+he+believed+all+humans+were+made+in+the+image+of+God+and+must+be+treated+with+dignity.%E2%80%9D&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=YPGtGZox14&#038;sig=ACfU3U1WTwxyceTM7lvpTWR0equK8T9UDQ&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwibxIOWlfj_AhVJIUQIHQE_CDoQ6AF6BAgEEAM#v=onepage&#038;q=Sherman%20%E2%80%9Cconsistently%20opposed%20slavery%20because%20he%20believed%20all%20humans%20were%20made%20in%20the%20image%20of%20God%20and%20must%20be%20treated%20with%20dignity.%E2%80%9D&#038;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> that the Founder \u201cconsistently opposed slavery because he believed all humans were made in the image of God and must be treated with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Bush\u2019s claims about the Declaration\u2019s drafters being enslavers and not seeing black people as human is wrong right off the bat with two of the five on the drafting committee.<\/p>\n<p>A strike some hold against Sherman is that he helped introduce the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/three-fifths-compromise-4588466\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three-fifths compromise<\/a>\u201d at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. It allowed Southern states to count three-fifths of their slave populations for representation in the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The Southern states wanted to count their entire slave populations so they would have more representatives in the House, while Northern lawmakers who opposed slavery didn\u2019t want any of them counted. Hence the three-fifths compromise.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, it was an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/the-constitution\/commentary\/what-the-constitution-really-says-about-race-and-slavery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> anti-slavery measure<\/a> because it served to curtail the influence of slave states in the House.<\/p>\n<p>The other three members of the Declaration drafting committee \u2014 Franklin, Jefferson and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gothamcenter.org\/robert-livingston-papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Livingston<\/a> \u2014 did own slaves, but for at least the first two, that\u2019s not the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin held slaves during much of his adult life, but during the Revolutionary War, his attitude began to change. By 1781, near the end of the war, he <a href=\"http:\/\/commonplace.online\/article\/benjamin-franklin-slavery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no longer possessed<\/a> any slaves. Then, in 1787, Franklin<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/legislative\/features\/franklin#:~:text=In%20his%20later%20years%20he,Promoting%20the%20Abolition%20of%20Slavery.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> became president<\/a> of the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery.<\/p>\n<p>In February 1790, in his last public act, he sent a petition to Congress on behalf of the society seeking the abolition of slavery and a ban on the importation of slaves, National Archives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/legislative\/features\/franklin#:~:text=In%20his%20later%20years%20he,Promoting%20the%20Abolition%20of%20Slavery.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documents<\/a> show.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/the-constitution\/historic-document-library\/detail\/petition-from-the-pennsylvania-society-for-the-abolition-of-slavery-to-the-first-congress-1790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> urged Congress to act because \u201cmankind are all formed by the same Almighty being, alike objects of his Care &#038; equally designed for the Enjoyment of Happiness the Christian Religion teaches us to believe &#038; the Political Creed of America fully coincides with the Position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That language sounds a whole lot like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/founding-docs\/declaration-transcript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Declaration<\/a> of Independence: \u201cWe hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/irony-protesters-pulling-statue-thomas-jefferson-name-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jefferson<\/a>, who is of course most associated with writing the revered document.<\/p>\n<p>Three years after drafting the Declaration, Jefferson sought to place slavery on the path to extinction in Virginia through legislation he<a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Jefferson\/01-02-02-0132-0004-0051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> introduced in 1779<\/a> that banned the further importation of slaves and created an orderly process for slaveholders to free those being held in bondage.<\/p>\n<p>The bill did not pass.<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson, however, did not give up his efforts, supporting legislation in 1784 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dem-rep-displays-stunning-lack-of-knowledge-about-declaration-of-independence-slavery\/\" title=\"Dem Rep's Ignorance on Declaration of Independence and Slavery Exposed\">federal level prohibiting slavery<\/a> in all the territorial lands west of the original 13 states.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\" class=\"one-half\">\n<div class=\"firefly-poll-question\">Do you think Cori Bush needs to learn this history?<\/div>\n<div id=\"pollFormBox\" style=\"display: none\">\n<p>\t\t<label>Yes<\/label><br \/>\n\t\t<label>No<\/label><br \/>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-poll-disclaimer\">\n\t\tCompleting this poll entitles you to The Western Journal news updates free of charge. heaven was silent in that awful moment! but it is to be hoped it will not always be silent &#038; that the friends to the rights of human nature will in the end prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Jefferson did see black people as human.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, the Continental Congress passed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/program\/bib\/ourdocs\/northwest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northwest Ordinance<\/a>, which established the laws governing the territorial land encompassing the future states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. The ordinance outlawed the introduction of slavery in the territory.<\/p>\n<p>The Constitution specifically authorized the federal government to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/constitution\/#!\/articles\/1\/essays\/60\/slave-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban the importation of slaves<\/a> in 1808 (approximately 20 years from the date the document was ratified).<\/p>\n<p>Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/03\/02\/congress-votes-to-ban-slave-importation-march-2-1807-430820#:~:text=On%20this%20day%20in%201807,1%2C%201808.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted to do so in 1807<\/a>, and then-President Jefferson signed the bill into law, allowing it to take effect on Jan. 1, 1808.<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson had called on Congress to pass such legislation in his 1806 State of the Union address.<\/p>\n<p>He would write about the evils of slavery in his only published work, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/teachingamericanhistory.org\/library\/document\/notes-on-the-state-of-virginia-query-xviii-manners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notes on the State of Virginia<\/a>\u201d in 1781.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?\u201d Jefferson asked. \u201cThat they are not to be violated but with his wrath?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those words are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thje\/learn\/photosmultimedia\/quotations.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inscribed<\/a> in the Jefferson Memorial in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginian predicted an armed conflict in the nation\u2019s future if \u201ctotal emancipation\u201d by the slaveholders did not eventually occur, which of course happened in the 1860s with the Civil War.
