And while that\u2019s the closest this concept has come to becoming law, it\u2019s certainly become a totemic issue to the left, both here and in other Western nations.<\/p>\n<p>British author and conservative commentator Douglas Murray thinks it\u2019s rubbish. Appearing on \u201cPiers Morgan Uncensored\u201d on Tuesday, Murray tore into the \u201cgrievance competition\u201d reparations campaigners are engaging in, noting that most activists don\u2019t look to every nation involved in the slave trade for reparations and instead create a narrative where \u201cthe more virtuous countries are represented as the worst countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the move for reparations isn\u2019t quite as loud in the United Kingdom as it is in the U.S., it\u2019s still a major issue on the political left. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/feb\/27\/british-slave-owners-family-makes-public-apology-in-grenada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.K. Guardian<\/a>, the issue took up headlines earlier this year when members of an aristocratic family traveled to the Caribbean nation of Grenada in March to apologize for their role in the slave trade and called for \u201cthe British government to enter into meaningful negotiations with the governments of the Caribbean in order to make appropriate reparations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, prominent Labour MP Clive Lewis said Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nigel-farage-reacts-rishi-sunak-becoming-new-pm-globalist-ever-saw-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rishi Sunak<\/a> should enter negotiations with Caribbean leaders on reparations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/mar\/08\/clive-lewis-calls-for-uk-to-negotiate-caribbean-slavery-reparations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> the matter wasn\u2019t just the obsession of \u201cso-called woke extremists.\u201d In April, King Charles III said he supported research into any ties the British monarchy might have with the slave trade; in a speech last year, before he was monarch, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/apr\/06\/king-charles-signals-first-explicit-support-for-research-into-monarchys-slavery-ties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian<\/a> noted he told leaders of the U.K.-led Commonwealth of Nations that \u201cI cannot describe the depths of my personal sorrow at the suffering of so many, as I continue to deepen my own understanding of slavery\u2019s enduring impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat process has continued with vigour and determination since His Majesty\u2019s accession. Historic Royal Palaces is a partner in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-has-nasa-just-hired-24-theologians-to-study-how-humans-would-react-to-alien-life\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: Has NASA \u2018Just Hired\u2019 24 Theologians To Study How Humans Would React To Alien Life?\">independent research project<\/a>, which began in October last year, that is exploring, among other issues, the links between the British monarchy and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/there-wasnt-violence-there-wasnt-bloodshed-msnbc-whitewashes-al-sharptons-history\/\" title=\"\u2018There Wasn\u2019t Violence. There Wasn\u2019t Bloodshed\u2019: MSNBC Whitewashes Al Sharpton\u2019s History\">transatlantic slave trade<\/a> during the late 17th and 18th centuries,\u201d Buckingham Palace said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lipreaders-reveal-frustrated-king-charles-said-sat-coach-coronation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Charles<\/a> has never owned a slave. Neither has MP Lewis or PM Sunak. The same can be said for every leftist wearing the hair shirt of reparations-talk in the West.<\/p>\n<p>But, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/psychopathic-problem-white-mind-anti-white-racism-became-cool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Murray<\/a> pointed out in his appearance on Morgan\u2019s program, it\u2019s hardly just the West that should be looking at its role in the \u201cgrievance competition\u201d reparations-boosters want to engage in \u2014 especially as, in the U.K., \u201call of this was addressed two centuries ago.\u201d (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Slavery-Abolition-Act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slavery Abolition Act<\/a> was passed in U.K. parliament in 1833.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything has consequences. All history has consequences and ramifications,\u201d Murray said. \u201cBut you know, if we were to play this fairly, we would at least look at all of the countries around the world that engaged in the slave trade who are simply not interested in any form of reparations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ottoman empire, all the Arab countries, who not just traded far more slaves and across the Atlantic, but castrated all the men, so that there wouldn\u2019t be any more African slaves after them,\u201d Murray noted. \u201cThey worked them to the bone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see no interest across Africa in paying reparations for selling their brother and sister Africans into slavery, or for working them to the bone, to the present day,\u201d Murray continued, noting that \u201cthere are more slaves in the world today than there were at the height of the transatlantic slave trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cSome of us are simply a bit bored of hearing people ripping up closed wounds and then crying about their hurt, or their presumed hurt, because everybody could do this,\u201d Murray continued, noting that \u201ca million Europeans were stolen by North Africans over the course of decades of the North African Barbary pirates slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would you end if you did that? Why is that? It\u2019s not because we\u2019re racist. \u2026 It\u2019s because we\u2019re good,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s because when we see racism, we actually call it out and recognize it as a sin. Try finding that across Africa. Try finding that across the Middle East or in China \u2026 so what we have is a situation where the more virtuous countries are presented as the worst countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sick, and most of us are tired of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is what always gets missed in the grievance Olympics: It\u2019s the nations that sacrificed the most and have done the most to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/douglas-murray-shreds-concept-of-reparations-the-more-virtuous-countries-are-represented-as-the-worst\/\" title=\"Douglas Murray debunks reparations: 'Virtuous nations portrayed as the worst.'\">rectify wrongs committed centuries ago<\/a> that are being asked to pay, not those who refuse to own up to past or present wrongs.<\/p>\n<p>Those who are against the concept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/government-reparations-task-force-leader-fired-arrested-city-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of reparations<\/a> \u2014 particularly if they\u2019re white \u2014 are asked to politely refrain from stating their opinion too strongly when the matter comes up. It\u2019s not just because of privilege or because one doesn\u2019t want to offend delicate woke sensibilities. It\u2019s because the very idea of transferring wealth based on race and a historical iniquity that hasn\u2019t existed in the United States for over 150 years and the British empire for almost 200 doesn\u2019t hold up well under any kind of serious scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>If one needs more evidence, perhaps we should go back to a time not so long ago when Don Lemon was a man still in the employ of CNN and still in the business of witless opinion-making. Upon King Charles\u2019 ascent to the throne, he asked royal commentator Hilary Fordwich about \u201cthose who are asking for reparations for colonialism \u2026 some people want to be paid back. Members of the public are wondering, \u2018Why are we suffering when you have all of this vast wealth?\u2019 Those are legitimate concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/don-lemon-audacity-suggest-royal-analyst-monarchy-pay-reparations-immediately-regrets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what happened next<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/donlemon?\">@DonLemon<\/a> tells royal commentator Hilary Fordwich the royal family should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnns-don-lemon-pushes-british-pundit-on-royal-family-owing-reparations-he-immediately-regrets-it\/\" title=\"CNN\u2019s Don Lemon Pushes British Pundit On Royal Family Owing Reparations. It\u2019s that this logic only appeals to the kind of people who might entertain the idea that MH370 disappeared into a black hole because it\u2019s simply absurd.<\/p>\n<p>The nations that have given the most to put an end to the slave trade are then asked to turn around and give more to ameliorate the damage done by the slave trade. All others are to be ignored. Which is to say that this isn\u2019t about the slave trade at all, but about weakening the moral standing of the West by asking for virtue-signaling ransom money.<\/p>\n<p>But, by the very act of asking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-major-city-considers-reparations-plan-includes-5-million-every-eligible-black-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that ransom money<\/a>, the left puts the lie to the idea that nations like the U.S. and the U.K. are iniquitous and racist \u2014 because those are some of the few places that engaged in the transatlantic slave trade where this request would even be seriously entertained. The rest of the apparatus that enabled this evil \u2014 and the countries that still benefit from it today \u2014 would, and do, laugh it off.
