While most of the country was occupied with patriotic merrymaking, however, Louisiana U.S. District Court Judge Terry A. Doughty managed to quietly give conservatives a little bit more freedom to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-likely-violated-first-amendment-covid-19-pandemic-federal-judge-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>, Doughty issued an injunction Tuesday that prevents officials in President Joe Biden\u2019s administration from meeting and coordinating with Big Tech giants like Google, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-meta-gets-forced-sell-company-250m-loss-slapped-massive-antitrust-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> (formerly Facebook) and Twitter, citing First Amendment free-speech concerns raised in a lawsuit by attorneys general from Louisiana and Missouri.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/07\/04\/biden-social-lawsuit-missouri-louisiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> \u2014 as always, striking a worried note \u2014 called the injunction \u201cthe most successful legal effort to date to counter tech company moderation efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The suits allege that the Biden White House either coerced or \u201csignificantly encourage[d]\u201d censorship of certain views, particularly related to the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines or election security, in meetings with representatives from those companies.<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys general argued the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/musk-right-bombshell-leak-reveals-fired-twitter-exec-met-biden-admin-discuss-censorship-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden administration<\/a> had enabled a \u201csprawling federal \u2018Censorship Enterprise\u2019\u201d which amounted to \u201cthe most egregious violations of the First Amendment in the history of the United States of America\u201d in curtailing \u201cprotected speech\u201d online.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.lawd.189520\/gov.uscourts.lawd.189520.293.0_1.pdf#page=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doughty\u2019s ruling<\/a> isn\u2019t final, the judge wrote in his injunction that the attorneys general \u201chave produced evidence of a massive effort by Defendants, from the White House to federal agencies, to suppress speech based on its content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/reason-to-celebrate-on-july-4-judge-struck-blow-for-freedom-against-biden-admin-big-tech-censorship\/\" title=\"July 4: Judge Strikes Blow for Freedom Against Biden Admin, Big Tech Censorship\">exceptions involving national security threats<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/stacey-abrams-decries-voter-suppression-georgia-sees-record-turnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voter suppression<\/a> or other criminal activity, the injunction prohibits a wide swath of individuals and executive agencies from coordinating with Big Tech.<\/p>\n<p>This includes some of Biden\u2019s cabinet members and White House press secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-reporters-heated-clash-kjp-removed-due-technical-glitch-white-house-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karine Jean-Pierre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, a period perhaps best characterized by widespread doubt and uncertainty, the United States Government seems to have assumed a role similar to an Orwellian \u2018Ministry of Truth,\u2019\u201d Doughty wrote in his injunction, noting the government\u2019s role in suppressing online expression \u201clikely violate the Free Speech Clause\u201d and the court \u201cis not persuaded by Defendants\u2019 arguments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the allegations made by Plaintiffs are true, the present case arguably involves the most massive attack against free speech in United States\u2019 history,\u201d he continues. \u201cIn their attempts to suppress alleged disinformation, the Federal Government, and particularly the Defendants named here, are alleged to have blatantly ignored the First Amendment\u2019s right to free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-judge-issues-jen-psaki-brutal-blow-tried-circumvent-ruling-denied\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">while Doughty<\/a> wrote that \u201cthe censorship alleged in this case almost exclusively targeted conservative speech,\u201d he noted that the implications go \u201cbeyond party lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViewpoint discrimination is an especially egregious form of content discrimination,\u201d Doughty wrote. \u201cThe government must abstain from regulating speech when the specific motivating ideology or the perspective of the speaker is the rationale for the restriction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reactions, as you might imagine, depended on where you fell on the political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy birthday America. For years, Republicans have argued that social media companies\u2019 policies to address disinformation related to elections and public health have resulted in the unfair censorship of their political views. Meanwhile, Democrats have argued that the companies have not gone far enough in policing their services to ensure they do not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/criticism-not-censorship-norwegian-pm-refuses-to-block-russian-state-media\/\" title=\"'Criticism, Not Censorship' Norwegian PM Refuses to Block Russian State Media\">undermine democratic institutions<\/a>,\u201d reporter Cat Zakrzewski wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the Louisiana-Missouri lawsuit marks a new twist in Republicans\u2019 years-long complaints that tech companies are silencing their views.
