Shapley\u2019s counter was a devastating blow to Hunter Biden\u2019s legal strategy and also represented a shot across the bow of the Biden-friendly Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Winston and Strawn attorney Abbe David Lowell dispatched a 10-page missive to Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, regarding what Lowell called the Republican House\u2019s \u201cobsession with attacking the Biden family.\u201d While the letter complained of the House\u2019s supposed abandonment of congressional protocol and rules of conduct, Hunter Biden\u2019s attorneys\u2019 real focus was Shapley, whom they painted as a partisan hack, not a whistleblower \u2014 and a criminal to boot.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Shapley&#8217;s Response<\/h3>\n<p>The June 30 letter from Hunter\u2019s attorneys strongly implied Shapley was responsible for leaking information to The Washington Post that served as the basis for an Oct. 6, 2022 article authored by Devlin Barrett and Perry Stein. The article claimed that \u201cfederal agents investigating President Biden\u2019s son Hunter have gathered what they believe is sufficient evidence to charge him with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase\u2026\u201d Biden\u2019s lawyers then challenged the House to ask the whistleblowers if they had leaked information to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>Shapley didn\u2019t wait for the House to ask, instead submitting an affidavit to the House Ways and Means Committee on Saturday in which he unequivocally swore he \u201cwas not the source for the October 6, 2022, <em>Washington Post <\/em>article.\u201d Shapley further attested that he had never \u201chad any contact with Barrett or Stein,\u201d the authors of the article. He also stated under oath that he \u201cnever leaked confidential taxpayer information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whistleblower then expressly authorized \u201cthe <em>Washington Post <\/em>and\/or journalists Devlin Barrett, Perry Stein, or any other <em>Washington Post <\/em>reporter to release any communications directly or indirectly to or from me,\u201d agreeing \u201cto waive any purported journalistic privilege and\/or confidentiality that would have arisen had I been a source for the <em>Washington Post<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Shapley\u2019s lawyers wrote to Washington Post authors Barrett and Stein, noting that \u201cBiden family attorneys have falsely accused SSA Shapley of illegally leaking to you for your story, \u2018Federal agents see chargeable tax, gun-purchase case against Hunter Biden.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, SSA Shapley was not a source for you on that story, or any other story for that matter,\u201d the letter continued. \u201cSSA Shapley has never communicated with either of you, either on or off the record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, after stressing that Shapley had waived any confidentiality that would have arisen, the whistleblower\u2019s lawyers asked them \u201cto correct Mr. Biden\u2019s attorneys and clear SSA Shapley\u2019s good name of these false and retaliatory charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist asked both Barrett and Stein whether Shapley was a source for their article, but the reporters did not respond to the inquiries. Whether they will respond to Shapley\u2019s entreat remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>What is clear, however, is that Hunter Biden\u2019s attorneys don\u2019t care whether Shapley was the source. They are being paid to defend Hunter Biden, and beyond cutting a sweetheart deal with Joe Biden\u2019s DOJ, that means attacking everyone else. With Shapley and his testimony representing the most serious threat to the Biden family, the attacks on the IRS whistleblower are likely to continue.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Congressional Oversight Needed<\/h3>\n<p>While there is little that can be done to stop Hunter Biden\u2019s lawyers from smearing Shapley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-u-s-intelligence-agencies-are-keeping-from-congress-key-information-about-covid-origins\/\" title=\"Report: U.S. Intelligence Agencies Are Keeping From Congress Key Information About Covid Origins\">congressional oversight committees<\/a> should ensure the Biden administration\u2019s DOJ isn\u2019t providing an assist. A recent New York Times article suggests Hunter Biden\u2019s attorneys are attempting to inveigle the DOJ in the attack on Shapley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunter Biden\u2019s lawyers have told the Justice Department that Mr. Shapley has broken federal laws that keep grand jury material secret,\u201d The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/27\/us\/politics\/irs-official-justice-dept-hunter-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> last week. In his Saturday affidavit, Shapley also refuted this point, saying he never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/irs-whistleblower-knocks-out-hunter-bidens-lawyers-and-the-washington-post-with-one-blow\/\" title=\"IRS Whistleblower Takes Down Hunter Biden's Lawyers and The Washington Post\">knowingly released grand jury material<\/a>. But that might not matter to a Justice Department that answers to Hunter\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Shapley and the other whistleblowers have a strong advocate in Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who seems two steps ahead of everything the DOJ and other Biden apologists pull. It is unfortunate, though, that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-justice-department-nominee-faces-ethics-minefield-from-fathers-corporate-interests\/\" title=\"Biden Justice Department Nominee Faces Ethics Minefield From Father\u2019s Corporate Interests\">left-wing press<\/a> that once championed whistleblowers seems intent now to serve as scribes for Hunter Biden\u2019s attorneys.
