The White House said in a June 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2023\/06\/30\/congressionally-mandated-report-on-solar-radiation-modification\/\">statement<\/a> that the report \u201cdoes not signify any change in policy or activity by the Biden-Harris Administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, \u201cthis report fulfills a Congressional mandate, and there are no plans underway to establish a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-opens-door-to-bill-gates-style-sun-dimming-plan-to-fight-climate-change\/\" title=\"White House embraces Gates' sun dimming plan to combat climate change.\">comprehensive research program focused<\/a> on solar radiation modification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though such artificial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Congressionally-Mandated-Report-on-Solar-Radiation-Modification.pdf\">cooling<\/a> could \u201creverse many of the negative consequences of climate change,\u201d the report admits that these developments can come with \u201cramifications which are now poorly understood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The document <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/white-house-report-signals-openness-manipulating-sunlight-prevent-climate-change\">acknowledged<\/a> that the research program could help the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Congressionally-Mandated-Report-on-Solar-Radiation-Modification.pdf\">prepare<\/a> for a \u201cpossible deployment\u201d of SRM through public or private actors.<\/p>\n<p>SRM will not undo the consequences of greenhouse gas emissions. For instance, \u201cSRM would not ameliorate most of the impacts of ocean acidification \u2026 nor eliminate the tendency for fossil fuel burning to worsen air quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, \u201cSRM might halt but would not result in the rapid reversal of some important manifestations of climate warming, such as loss of land ice and greenhouse gas emissions from thawing permafrost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report also warns about several potential negative consequences of SRM. The procedure can trigger changes in stratospheric temperatures, a rise in sea levels, acidification of oceans, and alteration in precipitation patterns. It can also affect terrestrial vegetation, biodiversity, ecosystems, crop production, and coral reefs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModel simulations show that the chemistry of the stratosphere may change, and atmospheric circulations may intensify in ways that may lead to seasonal-scale impacts such as more frequent extreme drought or precipitation events,\u201d the report stated. \u201cGaps remain in our understanding of how SRM deployments might irreversibly alter the Earth\u2019s climate system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an open <a href=\"https:\/\/wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/wcc.754\">letter<\/a> published in January last year, a group of scientists and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2022-01-21\/climate-scientists-ban-solar-geoengineering\/\">scholars<\/a> called for an international non-use agreement on solar engineering, <a href=\"https:\/\/wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/wcc.754\">arguing<\/a> that such a deal will \u201cinhibit further normalization and development of a risky and poorly understood set of technologies that seek to intentionally manage incoming sunlight at planetary scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The signatories include Frank Biermann from the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development in the Netherlands, Melissa Leach from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex in the UK, and David Schlosberg from the University of Sydney in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are serious concerns about \u2018locking in\u2019 solar geoengineering as an infrastructure and policy option as well a<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The White House is considering radical climate change methods, such as blocking sunlight, as part of its agenda.
