They argue that the practice unfairly benefits mostly white children of wealthy alumni, giving them an advantage over minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lawyers for Civil Rights, a Boston nonprofit, filed a lawsuit on behalf of the black and Latino communities in New England, alleging that Harvard&#8217;s legacy admissions violate the Civil Rights Act. The lawsuit comes after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amy-coney-barretts-1st-opinion-for-scotus-gets-no-respect-from-leading-liberal-justice\/\" title=\"Amy Coney Barrett\u2019s 1st Opinion For SCOTUS Gets No \u2018Respect\u2019 From Leading Liberal Justice\">high court ruled<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/as-supreme-court-hears-challenge-against-race-based-college-admissions-joe-biden-wants-race-based-supreme-court-nominee\/\" title=\"As Supreme Court Hears Challenge Against Race-Based College Admissions, Joe Biden Wants Race-Based Supreme Court Nominee\">race-based admissions policies<\/a> at Harvard and the University of North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhy are we rewarding children for privileges and advantages accrued by prior generations?\u201d said Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, the executive director at Lawyers for Civil Rights. \u201cYour family\u2019s last name and the size of your bank account are not a measure of merit, and should have no bearing on the college admissions process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From 2014-2019, Harvard had an acceptance rate of 6%, but enrolled 33% of legacy applicants and nearly 47% of applicants who were children of faculty or staff. Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid William R. Fitzsimmons defended the long-lasting practice, stating that legacy status gives students a \u201cslight tip\u201d in the admissions process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Supporters of affirmative action argue that it helps counterbalance Harvard&#8217;s legacy admissions, which critics claim favor the wealthy elite. President Joe Biden and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) have both called for an end to legacy admissions after the Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biden urged universities to rethink legacy admissions, stating that they \u201cexpand privilege instead of opportunity.\u201d Sen. Scott criticized admissions policies that give \u201cpreferential treatment\u201d to certain individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think the question is how do you continue to create a culture where education is the goal for every single part of our community?\u201d Scott asked. \u201cOne of the things that Harvard could do to make that even better is to eliminate any legacy programs where they have preferential treatment for legacy kids, not allow for the professors \u2014 their kids to come to Harvard as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch also targeted legacy admissions in a concurring opinion after voting with conservatives against affirmative action, stating that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/harvard-sued-over-legacy-admissions-after-activists-angered-by-affirmative-action-ruling\/\" title=\"Harvard faces lawsuit over legacy admissions following affirmative action ruling backlash.\">process \u201cundoubtedly benefits white<\/a> and wealthy applicants the most.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIts preferences for the children of donors, alumni, and faculty are no help to applicants who cannot boast of their parents\u2019 good fortune or trips to the alumni tent all their lives,\u201d Gorsuch wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Civil rights activists are suing Harvard, infuriated by the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to eliminate affirmative action in college admissions.
