All morning, WeChat and WhatsApp channels, popular with Asian Americans, had been exploding with messages in support of <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforfairadmissions.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Students for Fair Admissions<\/a>, the group that brought the lawsuits, including a simple exclamation: \u201c!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-870360632\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-40d7a849f721b7898bffd44621fa2a66 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-40d7a849f721b7898bffd44621fa2a66\"><\/div>\n<p>Before Zhao could get much further, a young activist cupped her hands over her mouth to shout him down, yelling: \u201cStop trying to be model minorities!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind Zhao, we watched stunned, supporting the retiree with cheers, but that heckling was just the first salvo in an afternoon of taunting, intimidation, and slurs that activists fighting the Supreme Court decision hurled. <\/p>\n<p>Hours later, I left the Supreme Court, drenched in shock and sweat, with a very important revelation from the experience: the aggression we faced is a harbinger of things to come. The Biden administration and Democratic special interest groups and activists are deeply committed to fighting the decision, and I left certain of this: they will put in place a new campaign that will be akin to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationnext.org\/how-mama-bears-won-court-victory-helped-elect-governor-virginia-immigrant-parents-asia-fight-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cMassive Resistance\u201d<\/a> of the 1950s when Southern Democrats refused to accept another critical U.S. Supreme Court civil rights decision, <em>Brown v. Board of Education<\/em>, also upholding the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Amendment and its guarantee of equality under the law, in that case ordering school boards to integrate public schools and end their racism against black students.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"nYp54etUhvmzgrLEwMJpM91xIsTqDWau6AjX82iD6V8qRV93NydgoSsEZXjtU1yOAfHF4NvCQdBIxYwunJH5Oz\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ratio ratio-16x9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE. NAACP Legal Defense Fund group harasses brave Asian American parents at Supreme Court\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SPzPm36ty_4?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Later,\u00a0I figured out\u00a0who was behind the harassment we faced: a front group,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenddiversity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cDefend Diversity,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0whose\u00a0website says it\u00a0is \u201cpowered\u201d by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAACP National Legal Defense Fund<\/a>, which had $174 million in revenue in its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/131655255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020\u00a0tax filing<\/a>. The National Legal Defense Fund created the organization, referring to it on its website footer as one of its \u201cLDF microsites,\u201d essentially weaponizing youth to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-courtroom-pressed-to-use-up-harvard-affirmative-action-case\/\" title=\"Supreme Courtroom Pressed to USE UP Harvard Affirmative Action Case\">defend affirmative action<\/a>. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU and other groups moved their press conference indoors to the Friends Committee on National Legislation because of the air quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ed1ab660773b5715d3bc169942b031a5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ed1ab660773b5715d3bc169942b031a5\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2023\/6\/30\/washington-protest-affirmative-action-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard Crimson\u00a0<\/a>quoted a Harvard student, Nahla Owens, \u201cof Defend Diversity,\u201d explaining they didn\u2019t want our parents to \u201cspeak for people,\u201d saying: \u00a0\u201cOriginally, this wasn\u2019t supposed to happen because of the air quality, but we knew we just couldn\u2019t stand aside and let SFFA speak for people who are supposed to be students applying and take that narrative.\u201d Thus, they\u00a0chased after us, most of us immigrants, with their cookie-cutter shirts, chants, and signs, which read, ironically, \u201cWe the People,\u201d \u201cDiversity Opportunity Justice\u201d and \u201c#DefendDiversity.\u201d\u00a0While we supported Students for Fair Admissions, or \u201cSFFA,\u201d we weren\u2019t representing the group. We were immigrant parents and each one of us had become accidental activists, fighting anti-Asian racism. The NAACP\u2019s National Legal Defense Fund didn\u2019t return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Before we\u2019d even gotten to our second speaker, Eva Gao, a brave mother from Montgomery County, Maryland, police ordered us to leave our prime spot in front of the majestic building (saying there was a <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/nation-world\/suspicious-package-reported-at-supreme-court-following-major-ruling-evacuation-safety-abundance-of-caution-washington-dc-race-college-admissions-students-harvard-education-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspicious package<\/a> in the area), and <a href=\"https:\/\/capanova.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yuyan Zhou<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/XVanFleet?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xi Van Fleet<\/a>, local northern Virginia parents and survivors of China\u2019s brutal Cultural Revolution, swept dutifully across the street with our parents, carrying signs, banners, flower bouquets, and American flags.<\/p>\n<p>As I walked to a third spot, our group told to move again, I thought of my journey there, the daughter of immigrants who survived British colonial rule in India, when one of the activists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2023-06-29\/supreme-court-strikes-down-affirmative-action-in-college-admissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kashish Bastola<\/a>, a Harvard student, eyed my shirt, which read simply, \u201cSave Merit,\u201d and taunted me, pitifully: \u201cThis is really embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should be ashamed, ma\u2019am,\u201d scolded another activist. \u201cYou\u2019re on the wrong side of this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-053a6044fb7e42ea30bb92e55c7494db fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-053a6044fb7e42ea30bb92e55c7494db\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption>\n<div class=\"row no-gutters body-xs m-0 text-start\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-8\">\n<div class=\"article-thumbnail-caption d-flex align-items-center justify-content-md-end label-xs mt-15\">         <i class=\"mdi mdi-camera me-10\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>         <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Image Credit<\/span>Asra Nomani       <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou all benefit from white proximity!\u201d the taunts continued, this time coming from Nadine Seiler, an immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago with her wheeled wagon covered with flags from Black Lives Matter, pride, and other causes of the day. Last year, the Washington Post profiled her as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/01\/30\/dc-blm-fence-artwork-protest\/\">\u201cBlack Lives Matter fence\u2019s guardian,\u201d<\/a> curating items left on a memorial fence near the White House. Described previously as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdrb.com\/nadine-seiler-an-abortion-rights-demonstrator-jpg\/image_aa98e82c-e118-11ed-84fe-27f301a7f052.html\">\u201cabortion rights demonstrator\u201d<\/a> protester, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LiteraryMouse\/status\/1565154355296325632?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became a fixture<\/a>\u00a0at the protests against conservative justices last year with her trademark wagon, this week a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2023\/06\/29\/supreme-court-student-loan-forgiveness-affirmative-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new Washington Post piece<\/a> published a caption of a photo of her this way: \u201cNadine Seiler, with bullhorn, argues with anti-affirmative action demonstrators outside the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the Washington Post and those mocking us, we were reduced to \u201canti-affirmative action demonstrators,\u201d without names or stories, because in this new rush to resist our exercise of the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Amendment\u2019s equal protection clause, guaranteeing all people freedom from racism and discrimination, it\u2019s easier for our opponents to dehumanize us. In the photo, I was on the other end of Seiler\u2019s bullhorn, but our Asian immigrant parents were reduced to nameless \u201cdemonstrators.\u201d In a Washington Post and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2023\/6\/30\/washington-protest-affirmative-action-decision\/\">Harvard Crimson<\/a> video, ignoring the parents and featuring the student activists, one of them, Nahla Owens, a Harvard student, declaring, \u201cRegardless of what those people back there are saying\u2026diversity unites us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We were now \u201cthose people.\u201d Seiler had a special slur for Harry Jackson, a local black father who supports our efforts, as he stood at the street corner, dissing Justice Clarence Thomas in the process, calling Jackson \u201cClarence Thomas Black.\u201d A sign on her wagon clearly communicated the erasure that happens to parents like Jackson and the Asian pro-merit moms and dads, reading: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drnimishabarton.com\/redacted\/proximity-to-whitenessnbspanti-blackness-people-of-color-and-the-struggle-for-solidarity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White Proximity<\/a> Groups Benefit from the Struggle of Black People.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption>\n<div class=\"row no-gutters body-xs m-0 text-start\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-8\">\n<div class=\"article-thumbnail-caption d-flex align-items-center justify-content-md-end label-xs mt-15\">         <i class=\"mdi mdi-camera me-10\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>         <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Image Credit<\/span>Asra Nomani       <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a briefing Friday morning with community leaders, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona pulled out a clich\u00e9 from the new woke-speak, saying to \u201cstudents of color\u201d and their families, \u201cWe see you,\u201d as he asserted the Biden administration\u2019s gameplan to defy the Supreme Court, however it can, saying: \u201cAt the end of the day, we\u2019re going to be on offense here. We\u2019re going to push.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot let this decision be the last word,\u201d Neera Tandem, domestic policy advisor in the Biden administration, said at the briefing. She echoed <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4074024-biden-path-forward-supreme-court-affirmative-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biden\u2019s response<\/a> to the ruling that an \u201cadversity standard,\u201d with \u201cgrit and persistence,\u201d \u201cpersonal experiences of hardship, including, uh, discrimination and even including racial discrimination,\u201d should be included in admissions decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Our parents are \u201cgrit and persistence\u201d personified, but that doesn\u2019t matter to the Massive Resistance 2.0. We are the inconvenient minority to the excuses Cardona and others use to cover up decades of failures by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-carolina-education-group-launches-schoolhouse-shock-program-to-document-extremism-in-the-classroom\/\" title=\"North Carolina Education Group Launches \u2018Schoolhouse Shock\u2019 Program To Document Extremism In The Classroom\">public school officials<\/a> to children from Black and Hispanic communities. They throw \u201cequity\u201d around as a panacea for fundamental failures in simply teaching children from those communities and use Asian Americans as a scapegoat for their failures.<\/p>\n<p>One of the men waving his sign in the faces of parents was a young man, wearing a t-shirt with the image of a Chinese-born American singer, Alice Longyu Gao. Ironically, he was doing media interviews as a representative of OCA, Asian Pacific American Advocates, a self-described <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocanational.org\/about\">\u201csocial justice organization,\u201d<\/a> with a mission to \u201cempower\u201d Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We were just the wrong kind of Asian Americans. The group\u2019s vice president of public affairs, Kendall Kosai, had <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OCANational\/status\/1674449596238516225?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued a statement<\/a> just moments earlier on Twitter saying the Supreme Court decision was an \u201cabsolute gut punch to our county\u2019s efforts in creating a more inclusive society for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She promised they would \u201cwork with our partners in the university admissions systems\u201d to develop \u201calternatives to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/byu-rooting-out-racism-task-force-calls-for-race-conscious-religious-curriculum-admissions-standards\/\" title=\"BYU \u2018Rooting Out Racism\u2019 Task Force Calls For \u2018Race-Conscious\u2019 Religious Curriculum, Admissions Standards\">race-conscious admissions<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Massive Resistance 2.0.<\/h2>\n<p>One of our mothers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/virginia-senate-state-board-of-education-nominee-suparna-dutta-glenn-youngkin-26377d21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">, Supar<\/a>na Dutta, lived in poverty when she arrived in Tennessee from India as a graduate student. She became a co-founder of an organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/coalitionfortj.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coalition for TJ,<\/a> that I and other parents in Fairfax County, Virginia started in August 2020, challenging the removal of a merit test to the No. 1 high school in America, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and the arrival of a \u201cholistic\u201d admissions process based on \u201cExperience Factors.\u201d In 2022, we <a href=\"https:\/\/pacificlegal.org\/case\/coalition_for_tj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won a federal court<\/a> decision, declaring the new \u201crace-neutral\u201d admissions system \u201cpatently unconstitutional,\u201d illegal, and anti-Asian, the judge noting that a school board member admitted the new system was <a href=\"https:\/\/asrainvestigates.substack.com\/p\/tjpapers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201canti asian [sic] LOL.\u201d<\/a> Earlier this year, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/bench-memos\/fourth-circuit-divide-over-tj-admissions-policy-foretells-next-battles-on-racial-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a> in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, but we had to lose to win in the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>In August, our lawyers at Pacific Legal Foundation will file a certification with the court to have our appeal heard by the justices, and, if all goes well, the U.S. Supreme Court will accept our case, and our parents will return to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court about this time next year \u2014 for another victory for equality, civil rights and justice.<\/p>\n<p>Just like we as a nation were able to defeat the Massive Resistance of the 1950s, we must do the same today on every front, from our schools and colleges to our workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>By afternoon\u2019s end, we were shuffled to a fourth spot, this time at least under the shade of trees on the front lawn of the U.S. Capitol. There, our parents stood strong, with \u201cgrit and persistence,\u201d not only in life but also that day against the bullies we unexpectedly met \u2014 a metaphor for the Massive Resistance 2.0 that the Biden administration will unleash on America.<\/p>\n<p>Dutta led us in a simple chant that drowned out the agents of the new Massive Resistance, pumping her fist into the air and shouting, \u201cUSA! USA! USA!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the clarity and conviction of our long journeys, we responded: \u201cUSA! USA!
