This incident, which occurred more than 2,000 miles away from the previous attacks in the Strait of Gibraltar, is the first of its kind in northern waters.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhat I felt [was] most frightening was the very loud breathing of the animal,\u201d Dr. Wim Rutten, a retired Dutch physicist and experienced boater who was sailing solo from Lerwick to Bergen in Norway, The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jun\/21\/orca-rams-yacht-off-shetland-first-such-incident-northern-waters\">reported<\/a>. The orca stayed behind the boat \u201clooking for the keel. Then he disappeared \u2026 but came back at fast speed, twice or thrice \u2026 and circled a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he just wanted to play. Or look me in the eyes. Or to get rid of the fishing line,\u201d the 72-year-old doctor said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The pods of killer whales have been attacking boats in the Strait of Gibraltar this year, with more than 20 incidents in May alone. Last month, the yacht Alboran Champagne was attacked by three orcas, which broke through the hull. The boat flooded, and the crew was forced to abandon ship, which was left adrift to sink.<\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Gibraltar \u2014 an 8-mile-wide section corridor separating Europe from Africa \u2014 has been a hot spot of activity, with more than 500 interactions between orcas and boats in the past three years. Killer whales can swim up to 35 miles per hour, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species\/killer-whale\">according<\/a> to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and an adult can weigh up to 11 tons and stretch more than 30 feet long.<\/p>\n<h3>White Gladis: The Mastermind Behind the Attacks?<\/h3>\n<p>Several reports suggest that a killer whale named White Gladis is teaching other orcas to attack yachts and has already struck three boats, sinking two of them. According to one report, researchers believe that White Gladis seeks revenge after being traumatized by a collision with a boat or being trapped in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pod-of-orcas-attack-racing-yacht-in-strait-of-gibraltar\/\" title=\"Orcas attack yacht in Gibraltar Strait.\">illegal fishing nets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Marine biologist Alfredo L\u00f3pez Fernandez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/orcas\/orcas-have-sunk-3-boats-in-europe-and-appear-to-be-teaching-others-to-do-the-same-but-why\">told<\/a> Live Science that White Gladis suffered a \u201ccritical moment of agony.\u201d \u201cThat traumatized orca is the one that started this behavior of physical contact with the boat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not interpret that the orcas are teaching the young, although the behavior has spread to the young vertically, simply by imitation, and later horizontally among them, because they consider it something important in their lives,\u201d L\u00f3pez Fernandez added.<\/p>\n<p>However, some believe that younger whales are copying White Gladis\u2019 attacks. Stephen Bidwell, whose boat was attacked by a pod of orcas, <a href=\"https:\/\/12ft.io\/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.telegraph.co.uk%2Fworld-news%2F2023%2F05%2F23%2Fkiller-whale-gladis-gang-orcas-sinking-yachts-gibraltar%2F\">told<\/a> The Telegraph, \u201cA clearly larger matriarch was definitely around and was almost supervising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an experience I will never forget,\u201d Bidwell said. \u201cI kept reminding myself we had a 22-ton boat made of steel, but seeing three of them coming at once, quickly and at pace with their fins out of the water was daunting.\u201d The attack lasted for more than an hour.<\/p>\n<h3>A Scary Encounter in Northern Waters<\/h3>\n<p>Most recently, the Ocean Race\u2019s Team JAJO\u2019s yacht was attacked last week. Underwater video shot by a crew member shows the killer whales swimming up under the Dutch yacht, then speeding toward the rudders, ramming into them. At one point, a whale bites a rudder. The crew banged on the hull in an attempt to drive the whales off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a scary moment,\u201d Team JAJO skipper Jelmer van Beek said, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/24\/sport\/ocean-race-orca-pod-gibraltar-spt-intl\/index.html\">reported<\/a>. \u201cThree orcas came straight at us and started hitting the rudders.
