This comes after federal judges recently limited both measures, sparking concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The legal moves from Skrmetti come after portions of two laws passed by the Tennessee legislature were blocked in the last month by federal judges. First, U.S. District Judge Thomas Parker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/tennessee-law-shielding-kids-from-sexually-explicit-performances-ruled-unconstitutional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled that a <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">law <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shielding children from being exposed to \u201cadult cabaret\u201d performances, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tennessee-moves-to-defend-laws-shielding-kids-from-trans-procedures-explicit-performances\/\" title=\"Tennessee defends laws protecting children from trans procedures and explicit performances.\">including sexually explicit drag shows<\/a>, was unconstitutional. Then on June 29, U.S. District Judge Eli Richardson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/a-sad-day-federal-judge-blocks-tennessee-law-protecting-children-from-life-altering-transgender-procedures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed a temporary injunction against<\/a> the ban on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nebraska-becomes-18th-state-to-ban-transgender-surgeries-on-children\/\" title=\"Nebraska bans transgender surgeries on children, becoming 18th state to do so.\">giving children cross-sex hormones<\/a> and puberty blockers,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both laws passed with widespread support this year in the Tennessee legislature, where Republicans have a supermajority of seats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Friday, Skrmetti filed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/attorneygeneral\/documents\/pr\/2023\/pr23-23-notice.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">notice of appeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> against Parker\u2019s ruling striking down the law related to sexually explicit performances, which Parker claimed was \u201cunconstitutionally vague and substantially overbroad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe language defining \u2018harmful to minors\u2019 that the court found unconstitutionally vague has appeared in various parts of the Tennessee code for 33 years and is found in other laws that prevent adults from grooming kids with pornography, strip clubs from opening next to schools, and schools from letting kids access pornography on the school internet,\u201d Skrmetti <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/attorneygeneral\/news\/2023\/6\/30\/pr23-23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u202f\u201cWe\u2019re appealing to ensure Tennessee\u2019s laws continue to protect Tennessee\u2019s kids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a separate legal action, Skrmetti filed a motion for an emergency stay from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals after Richardson placed a temporary injunction on Tennessee\u2019s prohibition of cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers for children, which have been shown to have life-altering impacts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf Tennessee wishes to regulate access to certain medical procedures, it must do so in a manner that does not infringe on the rights conferred by the United States Constitution, which is of course supreme to all other laws of the land.
