These high-emissions appliances are responsible for releasing toxins and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">particulate matter<\/a> into the air, posing a threat to human health and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>In the notice of intent, attorneys general for New York, Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington state argued that the EPA has failed to review and update its standards for residential wood stoves, despite being required to do so every eight years under the Clean Air Act.<\/p>\n<h3>A Repeated Failure<\/h3>\n<p>This is not the first time states have taken legal action against the EPA regarding residential wood stoves. The agency has been sued before in 1988 when it first began regulating their emissions. In 2013, seven states sued the EPA for its failure to update the wood stove emissions standards even after 25 years had passed.<\/p>\n<p>Now, history seems to be repeating itself. The states referenced a report from the EPA&#8217;s Office of Inspector General, published earlier this year, which described the agency&#8217;s residential wood heater program as &#8220;ineffective&#8221; and a hazard to human health and the environment. The report highlighted the contribution of these appliances to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/climate-the-new-corona-britains-fauci-says-doctors-needed-to-fight-air-pollution\/\" title=\"Climate the New Corona? Britain's Fauci Says Doctors Needed to Fight Air Pollution\">poor air quality<\/a> and the exposure of residents to toxins, contaminants, and particulate matter.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA&#8217;s 2015 performance standard was also criticized in the report for lacking clarity and allowing too much flexibility. This resulted in certification tests that may not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/epa-sued-by-10-states-over-ineffective-wood-stove-emissions\/\" title=\"10 states sue EPA over 'ineffective' wood stove emissions.\">accurately reflect real-world conditions<\/a>, potentially allowing wood heaters that emit excessive particulate-matter pollution to be certified for sale.<\/p>\n<p>The Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management, a group of state air quality regulators, reached a similar conclusion in their 2021 report. They described the EPA&#8217;s wood stove certification system as a &#8220;systemic failure&#8221; and expressed a lack of confidence in its ability to ensure compliance with current federal standards.<\/p>\n<h3>States Taking a Stand<\/h3>\n<p>Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Jason Brune emphasized the impact of wood smoke on air quality in Fairbanks and North Pole, stating that it contributes 80 to 90 percent of the problem.
