President Joe Biden<\/a> raged at the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday over its ruling that his plan to bail out student loan borrowers was unlawful.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the HEROES Act did not give the White House authority to unilaterally forgive federally subsidized student loans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis program was all set to begin. The website had been set up,\u201d Biden said. \u201cThe applications had been simplified so that it took less than five minutes to complete. Notices had been sent out to people about the relief they were eligible for. Sixteen million people \u2014 sixteen million people had already been approved. The money was literally about to go out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, Republican elected officials and special interests stepped in. They said no \u2014 \u2018no\u2019 \u2014 literally snatching from the hands of millions of Americans thousands of dollars in student debt relief that was about to change their lives,\u201d Biden claimed. \u201cYou know, these Republican officials just couldn\u2019t bear the thought of providing relief for working-class and middle-class Americans. Republican state officials sued my administration, attempting to block relief, including for millions of their own constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden was also asked why he gave \u201cmillions of borrowers false hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve doubted your own authority here in the past,\u201d the reporter added.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t give any false hope,\u201d he claimed. \u201cThe question was whether or not I would do even more than was requested. What I did, I thought was appropriate and was able to be done and would get done. I didn\u2019t give borrowers false hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the Republicans snatched away the hope that it was \u2014 they were given,\u201d he claimed. \u201cAnd it\u2019s real \u2014 real hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
