This is a BIG WIN FOR FREE SPEECH IN AMERICA<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Megyn Kelly (@megynkelly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/megynkelly\/status\/1674781349578960896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 30, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The justices, 6-3, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/22pdf\/21-476_c185.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">held<\/a> that the First Amendment prevents the state from forcing Lorie Smith from designing a website that has a message she disagrees with. As a result of the ruling, Colorado cannot punish Smith under the state\u2019s antidiscrimination law for refusing to work on the website.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place, where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands,\u201d Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the court.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Smith, a devout evangelical Christian who opposes same-sex marriage because of her religious beliefs, wanted to expand her website design business to include wedding websites, but did not want to create websites for same-sex marriages. However, Colorado\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scotus-rules-in-favor-of-christian-web-designer\/\" title=\"SCOTUS favors Christian web designer.\">public accommodation law prohibited businesses<\/a> from \u201cdiscriminating on protected characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith then proceeded to sue the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and other officials because she did not want to be sanctioned under the state\u2019s antidiscrimination law. In her suit she argued that as a creative professional, she has the right, under free speech, to refuse to undertake a project that conflicts with her religious beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>Lower Courts had ruled against her, prompting her to present her case to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Many have compared Smith\u2019s case to Jack Phillips, the Christian baker also from Colorado, who had refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sexy couple. An honor to have met them + shared their stories. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9vwRh5HyUJ\">pic.twitter.com\/9vwRh5HyUJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1674789429041569794?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 30, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Civil rights groups slammed Smith and her lawsuit, claiming that she was looking for a \u201clicense to discriminate\u201d from the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The three dissenting justices, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson said that the court\u2019s decision allows the public to refuse service to \u201cmembers of a protected class.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cToday, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class,\u201d Sotomayor wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the majority opinion, Justice Gorsuch went on to explain that one of \u201cour most cherished liberties\u201d is the ability to think for ourselves.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cBut, as this Court has long held, the opportunity to think for ourselves and to express those thoughts freely is among our most cherished liberties and part of what keeps our Republic strong,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOf course, abiding the Constitution\u2019s commitment to the freedom of speech means all of us will encounter ideas we consider \u2018unattractive.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Smith, like the baker Jack Phillips, was represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal group.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LANDMARK SCOTUS VICTORY: Today the Supreme Court strongly reaffirmed free speech in our case, 303 Creative v.
