Here\u2019s What The Data Say\">trans-identifying children<\/a> puberty blockers<\/a> or cross-sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone, the law also prohibits performing genital surgery or a double mastectomy to help a minor achieve the appearance of the opposite gender.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also prohibits trans-identifying students from using the bathrooms or locker rooms of the opposite gender at school and bans instruction about human sexuality in grades five and below as well as instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in all grades.<\/p>\n<p>The law also requires schools to give parents notification about classes on human sexuality, and parents must also be allowed to review the curriculum materials. Kentucky\u2019s ban also prohibits schools from keeping information like a student\u2019s gender identity secret from parents and says schools cannot force staff or other students to use pronouns that do not conform to a student\u2019s biological gender.<\/p>\n<p><h3>Limitations of the Ruling<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Only the portion of the law that bans puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors was blocked by the federal court.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><h3>A Political Battle<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky passed the bill in March, but the state\u2019s Democratic governor Andy Beshear vetoed the bill days later.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican-controlled legislature overrode the governor\u2019s veto later in March.<\/p>\n<p>The law was slated to take effect on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><h3>A Fight for Equality<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit against the bill was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACLUofKY\/status\/1674164049783959552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1674164049783959552%7Ctwgr%5E3e8ec264aed6b7a3f85f20baf532dca6a8a0afd5%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Ffederal-judge-strikes-down-kentuckys-ban-sex-reassignment-surgeries-cross-sex-hormone-therapies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brought<\/a> by the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky along with seven trans-identifying children, three girls and four boys, and their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Six of the children are currently receiving transgender hormone treatments, while the seventh child anticipates going on hormone treatments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu-ky.org\/sites\/default\/files\/field_documents\/pi_opinion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p><h3>Controversial Treatments and Health Risks<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese drugs have a long history of safe use in minors for various conditions. It is undisputed that puberty-blockers and hormones are not given to prepubertal children with gender dysphoria,\u201d the judge wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Both puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones come with serious health risks. Puberty blockers can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/gender-dysphoria\/in-depth\/pubertal-blockers\/art-20459075\">affect<\/a> bone growth and density and cause sexual dysfunction, voice damage, and infertility among other issues. Cross-sex hormones can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/transgender-young-people-in-u-s-have-nearly-doubled-recently-report-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cause<\/a> infertility, deadly blood clots, heart attacks, increased cancer risks of the breasts and ovaries, liver dysfunction, worsening psychological illness, and other serious conditions.<\/p>\n<p><h3>Changing Landscape of Gender Identity<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of teen girls in the U.S., some as young as 12, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/pediatrics\/generalpediatrics\/101252?xid=nl_mpt_DHE_2022-10-17&#038;eun=g394940d0r&#038;utm_source=Sailthru&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=Daily%20Headlines%20Evening%202022-10-17&#038;utm_term=NL_Daily_DHE_dual-gmail-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have gotten<\/a> elective, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-childrens-hospital-performs-sex-change-procedures-on-children-as-young-as-11-report\/\" title=\"Texas Children's Hospital does sex change surgeries on kids as young as 11, says report.\">gender-related double mastectomies<\/a> to remove their healthy breasts over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it is more popular than ever for youth to adopt new gender identities. An estimated 300,000 minors aged 13 to 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/transgender-estimate-press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified<\/a> as transgender as of last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge blocked Kentucky&#8217;s ban on transgender hormones for children, ruling that it enforces gender conformity.
