Version: 4.0.47--><h2>A Popular Artificial Sweetener May Be Declared &#8220;Possibly Carcinogenic to Humans&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>A popular artificial sweetener found in a wide range of food and beverages is expected to be declared \u201cpossibly carcinogenic to humans\u201d by a research arm of the World Health Organization, according to news reports.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/whos-cancer-research-agency-say-aspartame-sweetener-possible-carcinogen-sources-2023-06-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> Thursday that the ruling is expected to be made in July\u00a0by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer research arm of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-un-concerning-news-vaccines-may-not-work-variants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move could have a devastating ripple effect for manufacturers, as over 6,000 sugar-free products are manufactured with the substance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/aspartame-carcinogen-who-what-products-contain-aspartame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Those products include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-coke-bottles-banned-tsa-looking-like-grenades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diet Coke<\/a> and other reduced-calorie sodas<\/li>\n<li>Diet drink mixes such as Crystal Light<\/li>\n<li>Sugar-free chewing gum such as Trident<\/li>\n<li>Reduced-sugar jams and jellies<\/li>\n<li>Dessert mixes such as Sugar-free Jell-O<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aspartame, a chemical compound known as methyl ester, is 200 times as sweet as table sugar, CBS reported.<\/p>\n<p>The white crystalline-looking substance is often sold under the brand names Nutrasweet, Equal, and Sugar Twin.<\/p>\n<p>It is commonly found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-faces-food-water-shortages-amid-winter-storm-power-outages\/\" title=\"Texas faces food, water shortages amid winter storm power outages\">grocery store shelves<\/a> right next to sugar and is often packaged in paper packets and placed by restaurants in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/big-reclassification-underway-for-safe-ingredient-found-all-over-grocery-stores-check-your-labels-now\/\" title=\"Important Ingredient Reclassification Alert - Check Labels\">containers alongside regular sugar<\/a> as an alternative sweetener for coffee, tea, and other substances.<\/p>\n<p>Aspartame is popular among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/puppy-chews-sleeping-owners-toe-bone-may-saved-life-done-favor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetics<\/a>\u00a0who are trying to control their blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p>However, CBS noted, some studies have found that people who use large quantities of the substance \u201chad a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/19-year-old-tiktok-star-says-she-was-hospitalized-for-a-blood-clot-to-her-brain-caused-by-her-birth-control\/\" title=\"19-Year-Old TikTok Star Says She Was Hospitalized For A Blood Clot To Her Brain, Caused By Her Birth Control\">slightly elevated risk<\/a> of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAspartame may also cause headaches, seizures, and depression, some studies have shown,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/06\/29\/world-health-organization-aspartame-possible-carcinogen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fortune<\/a> reported that the news of the WHO branch has \u201cput the food industry on the defensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news outlet quoted the International Sweeteners Association as saying it has \u201cserious concerns with preliminary speculation about the IARC opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of the ISA include PepsiCo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mountain-dew-skittles-nesquik-hostess-donuts-foods-banned-bill-passes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skittles<\/a> maker Mars Wrigley, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Fortune also quoted a statement by Frances Hunt-Wood, secretary general of the International Sweeteners Association, who said, \u201cAspartame is one of the most thoroughly researched ingredients in history, with over 90 food safety agencies across the globe declaring it is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another trade organization, the International Council of Beverages Associations, condemned the leaking of the report, saying it \u201ccould needlessly mislead consumers into consuming more sugar rather than choosing safe no- and low-sugar options,\u201d Fortune reported.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as Thursday afternoon, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-additives-petitions\/aspartame-and-other-sweeteners-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food and Drug Administration website<\/a> still listed Aspartame among its list of sweeteners that have been deemed \u201csafe for the general population under certain conditions of use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, it added, the agency \u201ccontinues to monitor the latest science available on sweeteners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/big-reclassification-underway-safe-ingredient-found-grocery-stores-check-labels-now\/\">Big Reclassification Underway for &#8216;Safe&#8217; Ingredient Found All Over Grocery Stores &#8211; Check Your Labels Now<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cancer-causing concerns surround a widely used artificial sweetener found in various food and drinks.
