They have predicted that rulings against the colleges will lead to a significant drop in the enrollment of minority students and require admissions officers to experiment with new race neutral plans intended to counteract the impact.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The media had been preparing for this ruling for weeks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/06\/22\/the-supreme-court-could-end-race-in-college-admissions-heres-what-to-know-00103149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Politico<\/em><\/a>: &#8220;How the Supreme Court\u2019s Decision on Affirmative Action May Change the Future of College&#8221;:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The Supreme Court seems destined to end its term with a big rollback of the tool colleges employ to boost racial diversity on their campuses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What\u2019s unclear is how schools fashion race-neutral workarounds to fill that gap \u2014 or if the ruling pushes colleges to retreat on a goal that\u2019s been a priority for decades.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/colleges-anxiously-await-landmark-affirmative-action-decision-supreme-rcna90835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>: &#8220;Looming Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling Has Elite Colleges on Edge&#8221;:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Late June is normally a peaceful time on college campuses. Not this year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On Zoom calls, in working groups and in text chains, officials at elite schools are anxiously preparing. Within days, the Supreme Court could bar them from considering race as a factor in the admissions process&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Schools can\u2019t use quotas or set-asides, the court has ruled, but once students check boxes that indicate their race or ethnicity, those part of their identities can be taken into account. Until now, the court\u2019s proffered justification has been that certain &#8220;educational benefits&#8221; flow from a diverse student body, but a majority of justices have also ruled that lower courts must scrutinize whether schools have tried &#8220;race-neutral&#8221; alternatives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For nearly as long as affirmative action has existed, it has had its conservative detractors on the court. The most vocal has been Justice Clarence Thomas, whose former law clerks are now arguing the cases against the schools that the court is about to decide&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The problem, schools say, is the alternatives to race simply don\u2019t produce the same results. Femi Ogundele, the dean of undergraduate admissions at the University of California, Berkeley, says he has seen that firsthand. California is one of nine states that banned the use of affirmative action for public universities. In the immediate aftermath, selective schools in the state had a 50% decline in Black and Latino students admitted. Those numbers have never rebounded.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-affirmative-action-student-loans-gay-rights-elections-a3007709350cd1606d5ce9ac4de957a6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>: &#8220;The Supreme Court\u2019s Biggest Decisions Are Coming. Here\u2019s What They Could Say.&#8221;:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The survival of affirmative action in higher education is the subject of two related cases, one involving Harvard and the other the University of North Carolina. The Supreme Court has previously approved of the use of affirmative action in higher education in decisions reaching back to 1978. But the justices\u2019 decision to take the cases suggested a willingness to revisit those rulings. And when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-justice-dept-asks-supreme-court-to-save-obamacare\/\" title=\"Biden Justice Dept.
