Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC\/status\/1674453725014814720?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a> saying he agreed with the ruling and including a portion of Chief Justice John Roberts\u2019s majority decision (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/22pdf\/20-1199_hgdj.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>)\u00a0which summed up the legal and moral rationale for the court\u2019s ruling: \u201cThe student must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual-not on the basis of race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany universities have for too long done just the opposite,\u201d the chief justice went on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in doing so they have concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual\u2019s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned, but the color of their skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur constitutional history does not tolerate that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5179075\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript> The U.S. Supreme Court in Washington on March 23, 2023. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) also lauding the ruling, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenThomTillis\/status\/1674453096280334337?s=20\">saying:<\/a> \u201cThe Supreme Court made the right decision today. Colleges should not be able to discriminate against applicants based on the color of their skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Young Kim (R-Calif) offered her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepYoungKim\/status\/1674452222757810186?s=20\">support<\/a>\u00a0for the decision saying, \u201cToday\u2019s decision is a huge victory for students of all backgrounds. All students should be able to achieve their American dream. Race-based education policies divide our nation, undermine global competitiveness, and prevent students from reaching their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese out-of-touch policies make the American dream out of reach. We should not hold students back and send a dangerous message that one\u2019s race and background matters more than one\u2019s merits and character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Scott Franklin (R-Fla.) linked to an article on the ruling in his post <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepFranklin\/status\/1674452320703197198?s=20\">saying<\/a>, the decision was \u201can important step to restore true Equal Protection under the 14th Amendment. Racial discrimination should play no part in the college admissions process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenCalvert\/status\/1674463291698192384?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the Supreme Court \u201cupheld the Constitution and reaffirmed that discriminating against someone based on their race is unconstitutional. The decision aligns with the views of most Americans as well as the spirit of MLK\u2019s [Martin Luther King] dream that people \u2018will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Democrats React<\/h2>\n<p>Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) had harsh words for the court\u2019s decision\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepCohen\/status\/1674463259523526672?s=20\">saying<\/a>, \u201cAmerica is not yet a \u2018perfect union.\u2019 Centuries of discrimination still divide us, most dramatically in economic opportunity. Much of that springs from college admissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court decision keeps \u2018the good old boys club\u2019 alive, and the more perfect union on life support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Texas) took exception to the court\u2019s ruling <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepVeasey\/status\/1674452434062651403?s=20\">saying<\/a> that the Supreme Court has \u201cundermined the promise of equal and fair opportunity in America and has failed students who are disenfranchised in our education system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker went on to say in his full statement: \u201cAffirmative Action is a crucial tool used to ensure students of color, who have historically been impacted by lack of access, are not overlooked during the admission process and have a fair chance at attaining a quality education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith their decision, the Court has denied minorities the promise of equal and fair opportunity in America and has failed students who are disenfranchised in our education system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Texas lawmaker,\u00a0Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), also took a stand against the ruling <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAlGreen\/status\/1674453430474092552?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cWe must confront the SCOTUS decision on affirmative action at universities, a setback for equal opportunity in our education system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt undermines efforts to address inequities and promote diversity. We should strive for inclusive education reflecting our diverse society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
