The lawmakers are concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/infographic-timeline-of-the-durham-investigation\/\" title=\"Infographic: Timeline of the Durham Investigation\">potential political interference<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2023.06.28-BRW-Letter-to-CDC-Re.-Texts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Walensky on Wednesday, just two days before her scheduled departure from the CDC, requesting her phone records and texts with Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Request for Phone Records<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chairman Brad Wenstrup has sent a letter to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, requesting her phone records and texts with teacher\u2019s union boss Randi Weingarten. The request comes amid concerns of potential political interference.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDuring an April hearing with AFT president Weingarten, the Select Subcommittee learned \u2014 for the first time \u2014 that Ms. Weingarten had a direct telephone line to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky. Preserving all phone calls and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-staff-told-us-he-misspoke-joe-biden-confuses-his-agenda-in-60-minutes-interview-so-his-staff-steps-in-to-correct-the-record-video\/\" title=\"\"Biden's Staff Told Us He Misspoke\" - Joe Biden Confuses His Agenda in 60 Minutes Interview so His Staff Steps in to Correct the Record (VIDEO)\">text messages<\/a> between the two officials will ensure accountability for any political interference,\u201d the subcommittee <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/wenstrup-calls-for-phone-records-between-cdc-director-rochelle-walensky-and-teachers-union-president-randi-weingarten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Preserving Accountability<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Select Subcommittee aims to preserve accountability by requesting the preservation of all phone calls and text messages between CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and AFT president Randi Weingarten. This comes after learning about their direct telephone line during an April hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wenstrup\u2019s letter also accused the Department of Health and Human Services of failing to produce records in a timely manner, and only producing select documents that could be acquired through a freedom of information request. The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/about\/organization\/cio.htm#:~:text=CDC%20is%20one%20of%20the,of%20Health%20and%20Human%20Services.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is<\/a> a \u201cmajor operating component\u201d of HHS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Accusation of Obstruction<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chairman Brad Wenstrup accuses the Department of Health and Human Services of obstructing Congress by failing to produce records in a timely manner. He also criticizes the department for only providing select documents that could be obtained through a freedom of information request.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Department of Health and Human Services is continuing its pattern of obstructing Congress by apparently only producing documents already made publicly available via the FOIA. As a reminder, FOIA does not apply to Congress,\u201d Wenstrup said in the letter to Walensky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Text <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/texts-show-teachers-union-working-with-cdc-director-to-keep-schools-closed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">messages previously obtained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the Fairfax Parent\u2019s Association appear to show a close relationship between Weingarten and Walensky and seem to show Weingarten impacting CDC policy on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dr-fauci-is-trying-to-rewrite-history-in-front-of-our-very-eyes\/\" title=\"Dr. Fauci Is Trying to Rewrite History in Front of Our Very Eyes\">school closure policy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Text Messages and School Closure Policy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Text messages previously obtained by the Fairfax Parent\u2019s Association reveal a close relationship between Weingarten and Walensky. These messages also suggest that Weingarten had an impact on CDC policy regarding school closures.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weingarten texted Walensky in February 2021 saying that she had heard a \u201cleak\u201d from The New York Times about what was in the CDC\u2019s upcoming guidance for school re-opening, and expressed concern that it was \u201cat odds with [their] discussion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey are running with a full speed ahead angle\u201d for reopening schools, Weingarten wrote. She said the Times sent her a copy of the internal draft guidance that said, \u201cAt any level of community transmission, all schools can provide in-person instruction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHmmm. Argh,\u201d Walensky wrote to Weingarten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following the texts from Weingarten, the CDC released guidance that was different. It said, \u201cAll schools have options to provide in-person instruction.\u201d This guideline allowed school districts to stay closed while still saying they were following CDC guidelines. \u201cMiddle and high schools in virtual only instruction unless they can strictly implement all mitigation strategies and have few cases,\u201d the guidance added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wenstrup requested call logs and texts between Walensky and Weingarten on the CDC\u2019s director\u2019s personal and professional phones by July 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lawmakers probing the COVID crisis have once more sought phone call records between teacher&#8217;s union leader Randi Weingarten and outgoing CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.
