After his arrest, he spent 104 days at a Bronx hospital getting treatment for schizophrenia. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-homeless-hospitalization-policy-that-caught-backlash-has-helped-people-get-housed\/\" title=\"Controversial NYC policy aiding homeless individuals in securing housing.\">started taking medication<\/a>, showering, and eating regular meals, and he reconnected with his daughter and younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>In May, he moved into a BronxWorks shelter apartment. BronxWorks is now working on finding him housing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/four-underused-tools-to-stop-school-shootings\/\" title=\"Four Underused Tools to Stop School Shootings\">severely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/developing-dominions-anti-trump-executive-eric-coomer-owns-patents-on-adjudication-process-that-investigators-found-skimmed-votes-from-trump-in-michigan\/\" title=\"Developing: Dominion\u2019s Anti-Trump Executive Eric Coomer Owns Patents on Adjudication Process That Investigators Found Skimmed Votes From Trump in Michigan\">mentally ill<\/a> people<\/a> we&#8217;ve been chasing after for years,\u201d BronxWorks&#8217;s assistant executive director Scott Auwarter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/25\/nyregion\/mentally-ill-homeless-nyc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cSomething&#8217;s changed out there. It&#8217;s working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another man in his 60s, a former doctor, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/25\/nyregion\/mentally-ill-homeless-nyc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> been homeless for 15 years and suffered from paranoid delusions before he was hospitalized under the new policy. Now he is at a nursing home and his health has improved so much that he is like \u201canother person,\u201d according to his brother.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mounkaila and five other people BronxWorks hospitalized were on a city list known as the \u201cTop 50,\u201d a list of homeless people with serious problems who the city believes are very resistant to getting help.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the Top 50 list was Jordan Neely, who died in May when ex-Marine Daniel Penny put him in a chokehold after Neely allegedly threatened subway riders.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams announced the policy back in November, which involves involuntary hospitalization of people in \u201cpsychiatric crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams said at the time that the policy addresses \u201ca crisis we see all around us,\u201d namely, homeless people with serious, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/suspect-in-fatal-attacks-on-homeless-in-d-c-nyc-named-we-got-our-man\/\" title=\"Suspect in Fatal Attacks on Homeless in D.C., NYC Named: \u2018We Got Our Man\u2019\">untreated mental illness<\/a> who live on New York&#8217;s streets and in the subways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man standing all day on the street across from the building he was evicted from 25 years ago waiting to be let in; the shadow boxer on the street corner in Midtown, mumbling to himself as he jabs at an invisible adversary; the unresponsive man unable to get off the train at the end of the line without assistance from our mobile crisis team: These New Yorkers and hundreds of others like them are in urgent need of treatment and often refuse it when offered,\u201d the mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/29\/nyregion\/nyc-mentally-ill-involuntary-custody.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in November.<\/p>\n<p>Some progressive Democrats criticized Adams for the proactive approach when he announced the policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust because someone smells, because they haven&#8217;t had a shower for weeks, because they&#8217;re mumbling, because their clothes are disheveled, that doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;re a danger to themselves or others,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/29\/nyregion\/nyc-mentally-ill-involuntary-custody.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Norman Siegel, former head of the New York Civil Liberties Union and co-founder of a volunteer outreach program, the Street Homeless Advocacy Project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they&#8217;re going to have the cops, of all people, make those decisions?\u201d Siegel said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the criticism, Adams has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/05\/05\/eric-adams-subway-killing-safety-jordan-neely-00095625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he plans to \u201ccontinue to push\u201d to get mentally ill New Yorkers the help they need and away from living on the train.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York City&#8217;s policy, controversial yet effective, compels mentally ill homeless individuals to seek hospitalization.
