Stock Market Rallies After Court Overturns Roe\">groundbreaking ruling<\/a> by the U.S. Supreme Court. Governor Kay Ivey made the announcement, emphasizing the importance of fair representation for Alabama in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent 5\u20134 decision, the Supreme Court determined that the state&#8217;s congressional district may have violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965, potentially discriminating against black voters. Notably, Republican-appointed Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts joined the three Democrat-appointed justices in the majority opinion, while Justice Clarence Thomas dissented.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is critical that Alabama be fairly and accurately represented in Washington,&#8221; stated Governor Ivey in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorKayIvey\/status\/1673711632961134594?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1673711632961134594%7Ctwgr%5E4f6b30d0d0f908935a9b9ea08456bbe00fb86521%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonexaminer.com%2Fnews%2Falabama-kay-ivey-special-session-redraw-congressional-map\">statement<\/a> on Tuesday. She further emphasized that the legislature knows the state better than the federal courts.<\/p>\n<h3>Focus on Congressional Redistricting<\/h3>\n<p>During the special session, the sole topic of discussion will be the congressional redistricting. The legislature is set to convene on July 17, with further details yet to be provided.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is of the utmost importance that this special session only address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pelosi-who-claims-to-oppose-gerrymandering-funnels-300000-to-democratic-gerrymandering-group\/\" title=\"Pelosi, Who Claims to Oppose Gerrymandering, Funnels 0,000 to Democratic Gerrymandering Group\">congressional map<\/a> and nothing else. The task at hand is too urgent and too important,&#8221; stressed Governor Ivey. &#8220;The Alabama Legislature has one chance to get this done before the July 21 court deadline. Our Legislature knows our state, our people, and our districts better than the federal courts or activist groups do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals previously ruled that the state&#8217;s 2021 congressional map violated the Voting Rights Act. On June 8, the Supreme Court&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/supreme-court-strikes-down-republican-drawn-election-map-for-alabama_5320336.html\">majority concurred<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/third-degree-murder-charge-against-ex-cop-derek-chauvin-reinstated-by-appeals-court\/\" title=\"Third-Degree Murder Charge Against Ex-Cop Derek Chauvin Reinstated By Appeals Court\">appeals court decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The panel ordered the state&#8217;s Republican-controlled legislature to create a new redistricting plan with two additional districts by July 21. While the exact details of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alabama-governor-calls-special-session-after-supreme-courts-5-4-decision\/\" title=\"Alabama Governor calls special session following Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling.\">maps remain uncertain<\/a>, plaintiffs in the lawsuits proposed two districts with slightly over 50% black populations. This outcome appears to favor Democrats, as black voters in Alabama tend to support Democratic candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Justice Roberts, in the majority opinion, expressed disagreement with Alabama&#8217;s interpretation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
